My name is Abbie Emmons I teach writers how to make their stories matter by harnessing the power and psychology of storytelling, transforming their ideas into a masterpiece, and creating a lifestyle that makes their author dreams come true.
Story isn’t about “what happens” - it’s about how what happens affects and transforms the characters. I believe that there is an exact science (a recipe, if you will) behind a perfect story. And if you know what ingredients you need, you can create your own perfect story with ease and confidence. That’s what we talk about every week on this channel - and if it’s something you’re into, be sure to subscribe and join this community!

I always struggle with, "Am I going in the right direction with this?" or "Does this make sense?". The best thing I have discovered to support my confidence are my friends who love stories just as much as I do. I come to them whenever I'm having a crisis about the story and they always offer valuable insight and support me with yes, you are going the right way. Or a gentle nudge towards something that flows better. The great thing about NaNo is that you have an opportunity to make connections to such valuable friends!

That’s true. There were moments when I felt what the hell I was writing about and got really upset, but then some replied to my negativity by saying some good things in my writing which I didn’t realize they were actually there. And what’s important, those comments prompted me to work on my skills and ideas even more carefully and enthusiastically!

Anime does such a good job of side characters, and they do this by showing their back stories of course haha. Even the most ordinary characters are at the top of popularity polls, even passed the protagonist. I think the key is relatability, not always coolness even though I like that too.

I signed up for my first NaNoWriMo this year, it's horror/thriller YA/NA project. I have the outlining done and I have already written the first act (Which I'm very proud of!) Today I sat in front of my computer for a couple hours. I am incredibly excited, but I know I am a complete newbie and have decided to put all doubt to the side until I get done with the first draft and then go back in and edit in some details. It should be a lot of fun and a lot of work!

Something that comes to my mind when the long ago backstory thing doesn't seem to be what you want is to set a drastic moment (when it comes to it's internal conflict) to be the beginning of the story, one that drives the character crazy and makes them run away from their fear and the way they ran away from it (thinking how their misbelief affects this choice). For me, it's like using part of the Inciting incident's formula to apply the conflict we need to see in the hook, but without locking the character outside their comfort zone, then I think of the true inciting incident as the moment they can't go back to the comfort zone before the impossible choice.

I’ve loved writing my whole life, and I’ve been good at it, but a chaotic creativity child kind of good. And I’m a little older now, (teenage years) and want to get back into it. Your channel and Shaelin Writes has helped me so much, I’m working on a Novella called Beneath the Cloak of Blossoms, it’s set in the Victorian era, I’m so excited. Though it’s probably pretty amateur… Sometimes I doubt a lot and want to give up on it but deep down I love the story and hope it becomes something even if it’s far from perfect. Thankyou so much for this video, I needed it 💜

I've been following your account for a while now and your videos always make me happy and inspired. I'm currently writing my second novel, after working 5 years on my first one. Even though it's completed and I'm proud of it, I still don't like how it sounds so I haven't published it yet. Now that I'm working on my second novel, the impostor's syndrome is stronger than ever, but you put a smile on my face. Thank you and have an amazing day!! 😍☀️❤

I'm using NaNoWriMo to establish momentum with my current WIP. Started officially writing this first draft in June, its been a slow start but still making progress. This is my first novel ever and I'm writing an Epic Science Fantasy leaning more on the Fantasy side than the Sci-fi on the spectrum. Magic Systems, Cosmic Universe, Time, and Interesting Unique Perspectives with plenty of Awesomeness to go around. Also You answered my problem with Presenting my MC's Internal Conflict. Show her making decisions and taking actions based on her Belief Structure. Heck Yeah something has definitely clicked over here!

Thank you Abbie for sharing such an inspiring advice for all of us to hear. My biggest dream is to be an author someday and I am working my way to it. Hello! Your english is amazing, and you don't need to worry about vocabulary! There's tons of websites, books and resources on making your vocabulary better. But the main one is to read a lot, and read authors that have a huge vocabulary. Example: Holly black, Rick Riordan, Cassandra Clare, etc. And if you get their books on kindle, there's an option that defines words if you hold your finger over the word, so you'll learn much more and expand your vocabulary! I hope this helps!

Hi ArtRose37, I am a self-published romance author of five books and I can tell you that the fact you love your characters and their relationships should help you get this book done. One piece of advice I can give you is to make sure the first couple pages of your story grab your reader. Most readers don't like slow starts. They want something to care about in the beginning. I believe that the start of your book is one of the most important parts of your book in getting someone to read it. Good luck!

I think you're dead right about confidence. I thought for a while that reading badly written novels would give me confidence because if they can find readers my writing certainly could. What I've found is that it has the opposite effect where I sit down with the goal being merely to write something good enough that someone looking for a time killer would be willing to read it. You end up feeling that you won't even be able to do that because you can't bring yourself to write utter garbage and your confidence that you're better than the worst writers out there does nothing to convince you that you can write something reasonably good. I have often found myself imagining a book blurb where I basically say, hey this is crap, but it's entertaining crap and I'm only writing it to practice writing so whatever hope you like it. That might be ok for 13 year old writing Bleach fanfiction but not for a serious writer. Again, I have to start again sitting down at the computer with confidence that I have something to say and I can say it well. I'll try your words of affirmation technique. No doubt I'll feel silly but anything is better than just being stuck writing the first page over and over forever.

I'm going to either do actual nanowrimo, or do a private lose version of it. This is going to be a middle grade, or maybe young adult book. I'm probably going to shoot for thirty-thousand words, but I'd be happy if it's not done after that and needs to be longer, and I'd be happy if it seems done after twenty-thousand words. (Final draft may vary from this plan.) My book will focus on a wealthy, neurodivergent young girl, who is allowed to use as much of her parent's money as she wants. She was very confident when it comes to her horses, but has no confidence interacting with peers because her peers have only ever bullied her in the past. She is very flattered when another girl, who works as a groom at her boarding stable, wants to be her friend and allows her new friend to use her for her money. When her friend starts abusing her in worse ways, she tries to hide it but her parents find out and ban her from seeing her friend ever again and even file a restraining order. After years of thinking that she could have a human friend someday, she determines that she'll never have any friends other than her horses and parents. Her parents move her horses to a new boarding stable, where a younger girl who lives nearby keeps watching her do liberty dressage with her horses, through the fence. They see each other every day for a while before they start interacting with each other. She is very reluctant to let this girl in, but she eventually realizes that this is the perfect friend for her.

Heyy, new here. Loving the channel, can't believe I had't found it sooner. Also wondering (for a friend), do you ever get used to her eyes. They are distracting, lol.

For a first time writer, do you think it's a decent to write a story that isn't something you want to be your big idea? Like maybe a prequel to what you've been thinking of so that you don't mess up your good idea with the skills of a beginner at writing?

There's something I would like to know how to write. How do you write a mother who despite trying hard to connect with their children, simply feels uncapable of loving them unconditionally, even if she does her best to try and not be toxic ?

My biggest struggle has always been writing action sequences. I can write dialogue, I can write steamy scenes, i can write characters, but when it comes to action it always seems clunku. I was told by a beta reader that its because i tend to forget the emotional aspect of the action scenes. I wish i could figure out an easier way of doing the action, but having it mean something. And when I say action, I mean fighting sequences. Those are my kryptonite. I wanted to do nanowrimo, but my job has been super busy and mentally exhausting lately. I write on the weekends when I have a chance. So happy Starbucks is open for indoor dining again, because that has been my writing safe space for years.

I’m gonna attempt to write my first novel, it’s gonna be a romance. I’m feeling pretty intimidated, I’ve written short stories before but never something like this

Hi, Tyler I am a self-published romance author and I can tell you the first book is always the hardest. But now after self-publishing five romance novels, I can tell you it gets easier. Don't let it intimidate you. Remind yourself that even the top romance authors had to start somewhere before they became a success. Good Luck.

I have the terrible habit of changing the direction of the story especially when I am finally done with 1 arc. I feel sometimes its too much. Sometimes I feel its too less.

I feel you, I'm quite guilty of this too 😅, I let my daydreams and characters run amok and change my plot in a split second decision and it always ends up making me indecisive

I feel kinda bad watching these videos & taking notes knowing I'm just gonna use this advise for my fanfiction writing. Because I just don't have inspiration to write my own original story with my own characters. I have no oc's.

There's no need to feel bad! You're helping those tons of people who want to read fanfictions about their fandom, which can be about their ships or turn the story into an entirely new thing, or crossover! These help excite people about the various options they have other than canon things, and what's even better is finding a fan fiction author that actually plans their work out, dedicates themselves, writes PROPERLY (wattpad writers, I see you) and writes a great story! Good luck with your fan fiction, and I hope your journey goes well! Have a great day!

Can you please do a video on how to write non-fiction stuff like essays, reviews, creative nonfiction, critical analysis writing etc? I think being able to do non-fiction writing is just as important as fiction stuff, in my opinion
