How does DC's Flashpoint hold up today?

In 2011, Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert gave us the DC Comics event: FLASHPOINT! Little did we know at the time that this would kickstart the New 52 and become the basis for the upcoming The Flash movie!
But with the omnibus making reading the main event and tie-ins easier than ever before, I wanted to know just how well the event holds up today?

You are correct from what I had heard this was initially just meant to be a Flash event thgat became a DC event late in the game. DC was desperate to bring in new and lapsed readers and did this so people could read DC if they hadn't in awhile. It coincided with the lowering of the comic prices and for awhile including digital codes with the comic. It's the event that got me back into reading comics and I still have a bunch of the Flashpoint pins that were given out with certain books. Great video !

Flashpoint v1 is a banger, 3 issues, came out in year 2000. Pretty sure its an elseworlds title. Well worth a read. Barry saves JFK n all that.. high up on my list

“If you’re gonna read Flashpoint without any of the tie-ins, you’re really gonna be selling experience short.” Well said bro, I totally agree. The tie ins really does add to the world built in Flashpoint, and I also wanted more reverse flash in this as well. That would’ve added so much. I wish the event was like 7-9 issues long. Still one of my favorite stories of all time.

Great review Maddogg. I can't remember where I read it but I read somewhere that a few issues in they realised that by changing the timeline with this they could change characters and that what started the new 52

I feel the problem with Flashpoint is how the writer changed what was suppose to be just a Flash center story and turned into another DC universe reboot, which not only affected just the focus of the story but made the reboot come off as rush. At least when they reboot DC universe during Crisis on Inifity Earths, they gave it proper build up, concluding some of the heroes books and made a epic event showing the character at their best and giving each of them a moment to shine. It felt like a proper end to the pre-crisis continuity. Flashpoint would have work better if wasn't a reboot but just story taking place in alternative reality, very similar to Age of Apocalypse.

It has some strong parts and gets very interesting but like you said some tie ins are great but others are a slog to get through. And just like the movie we love the batman parts.

Undoubtedly at the time is when it worked best, it was the Crisis on Infinite Earths of that decade. I really liked it but it is true that better planning by the publisher would have been better to develop the story more (I only read the 5 issues, the regular Flash series and the one shot of Reverse Flash).

I agree with you on the main series. To me it felt like it just got going and then just ended. Needed to be at least 2 issues longer and not my favourite Geoff John's work. Character development out side Barry and Batman were underutilized. I mean why should I care if Aquaman and WW were at war. You didn't get to see their side much. I actually enjoyed Thomas Wayne the most post Flashpoint like the Button. Have you read the follow up series Flashpoint Beyond?

I have never read this book but it has always been on my top 5 want to comic reads. I wasn't expecting a review like this on the main story but interesting and good to here many of the tie-ins are good. It seams like most of the omnibus are tie-ins so overall i guess the story is passable but i strong core story makes all tie-ins better and while tie-ins can do the same thing if there are enough of them it takes many of them to do so!!! But the main character becoming just another player (as it sounds you said) is always really sad, and it sounds even worse as you state this is almost more of a Batman story than a Flash story. For a story that is supposed to be one of the greatest comic superhero stories of all time in many readers eyes of a non Batman/Superman/Spider-Man character to get a review like this is disapointing.

Hey I have a question so I wanna get into comics with flash point being my first but I wanna collect digitally and when I go to search flashpoint 10th anniversary edition into Google play books store nothing comes up no digital omnibus y is that I mean surly they didn't jst make a physical book and not a digital one could u help me please I wanna jst buy it all at once

Hey! Great question, I'd recommend just getting DC Universe Infinite if you're reading digitally, it will end up cheaper too! But if you want any other Flash recommendations, check out my Where To Start series! Hope this helps, and enjoy! :)

Yeah the flashpoint main story is a good story but it’s ending setting up new 52 dampens the story in my opinion.

Animated series was better. The book was mad short. Had so many tie ins. Civil War was good without the tie iin. House of M was short but better. Own the series not the tie ins 😓
