You have no idea how much this helped me, I was in the middle of installing my 25 row Setrab cooler on my 3.7 VQ37VHR in the shop and this video enabled me to determine which side was the "return" oil line which was the line that needed to have the suction fan thermoswitch threaded into it. Making that distinction was the make or break of the project and this video made it happen. Credit to this man for taking a moment to explain this plate to its customers as we all know straight answers are hard to get out of companies who make a product and ship it out without any label or instruction whatsoever. Lifesaver you are, my friend.

Good explanation! For everybody looking into manipulating the opening temperature: the wax elements from cooling thermostats seem to be pretty much the same, you just need to take them apart to get it out. Difference in diameter might be 1mm, 12mm vs 13mm. M22x1,5 should be the thread size of the cap.

This is a great explanation, thank you for doing this video! I have fitted one of these to mine (a HEL one but works the same way with a 92 deg C thermostat) have you noticed oil temps now take longer to warm up with this plate? Will not be a be problem in summer days/track driving but may be in winter. A little tape on the cooler would help that though I imagine!

I like these sandwich adapters because they work like the old Frantz adapters. The Frantz adapters couldn't cover as wide a engine size. My lawn mower has one for a bypass filter. Gulf Coast one on the Koehler.

Thanks, it's easy for one to think the thermostat is helpful in maintaining a minimum oil temp, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Here's a message I lifted off Mocal's site. "Prolonged use of a car engine in conditions where the oil cannot reach its correct working temperature will cause sludge formation and crankcase oil dilution, leading to excessive wear especially in the cylinder bores. Optimum engine power will only be delivered at correct temperatures. The elimination of drag in engines caused by cold oil is a most important consideration, especially with a racing engine, revving the engine without a load will not put much heat into the oil and devices for preheating the oil may not be available. It is therefore desirable to control of the oil flow through the cooler by a thermostatic device, we call an oilstat, set to divert oil to the cooler at 80ºC (although a wide range of settings is available for special applications). This is the minimum temperature required to evaporate and dispel contaminating substances."

Exactly. I did a lot of logs from Engine Control Unit. I would venture to say that this kind of thermostat only helps to bring to oil up to temperature faster from cold start. After that it's going to be too slow in it's reaction and/or influenced by other heat sources (the engine itself, engine bay temps). The best way to control temperature when driving in the cold season as an example is to tape off the oil cooler itself.

The Lotus Elise uses this Mocal Plate with a thermostat, there is an interesting conversation around premature cam failures and the possibility that oil too cool could be a contributing factor. My Elise has two oil coolers in the loop, the oil will likely never be as warm as it should be to get rid of moisture and to lubricate as well as it should. Since my use is street driving, I am looking to remove thermostat, make or buy a plug that will fit in place of the thermostat which will also receive a oil temp sending unit. If I don't get the higher oil temp, I'll consider sizing a restrictor at the input side of the oil cooler loop.. I would think a more proper plate would allow oil to flow through the cooler loop only after the higher range of ideal oil temperatures are reached. But this is perhaps the more safe and cautious approach?

If you remove the thermostat, if it is possible, the oil cooler would be (mostly) bypassed all the time. But what not take the easy way and taping off the oil cooler itself?

However one attempts to modify it, if it fails, it's important that it fails on the 'too cool' side :-)

I use the Perma Cool sandwich adapter that I get from Jeggs. it is for an oil cooler but works for a bypass oil filter or it would work for both I don't need the thermostatic ones. I just put one on a 2006 Pontiac Torrant. I couldn't use the Pontiac full flow filter.Had to use a 3/4. 16 thread like a Ford or Toyota. One problem with these adapters is they tend to hold the filter full of oil at shut down air can't enter the filter and let the oil out.

thank you so much, one of the best education videos i seen lately. so in my opinion no point in buying one with a thermostat. i think i will install this system in summer and remove it in winter. my cars water cooling system is weak so I'll need this in summer. just a question, will this sandwich plate slow the oil to reach the top of the engine ? and will it fatigue the oil pump ? any one with knowledge help us with this informations please.

Ok So Oil Coolers Are Actually Ran In Series With The Filter Correct? Not Parallel . So The Oil Cooler Will See Same Oil Pressure As The Oil Galleys etc?

Will always flow to oil cooler, cold and hot. When hot, thermostat closes making all oil go through cooler. When cold oil will go to cooler and to engine, when hot, it closes making all oil through cooler only

Thanks man, rather perplexing at first for me too. I wonder if hypothetically your oil cooler (the radiator part) were to get clogged would the engine not get any oil at all...?
@CatRacer1A2A
@CatRacer1A2A 2 жыл бұрын
If there was debris enough inside your engine to clog an oil cooler, then the oil passages inside your engine would also be blocked and clogged. This could only happen in a severely damaged engine where a clogged oil cooler is the very least of your concerns.

I was going to buy this when I found this video. I have a problem with too high oil pressure on my car. I blew one oil cooler, and to remedy this I wanted a sandwich plate that have a thermostat like this one. Because I believe that the point with a thermostat like that will prevent flow to the oil cooler until the engine temperature was high enough. The oil pressure is higher when the engine is cold. I cannot understand the logic behind the working of this thermostat. Oil flows through the cooler and the filter no matter what? But flows a little bit less through the oil cooler when the engine is hot?
@lockjawjak
@lockjawjak 2 жыл бұрын
When the thermostat is open, the oil cooler effectively has both the feed and return lines plumbed into the same pre-oil filter line and because there is not a pressure differential from the feed to the return, no oil will actually flow through the cooler until the thermostat starts closing. As it closes, it will causes a restriction in the flow going through it and that is when there will be a pressure differential from the oil cooler feed (slightly higher pressure due to thermostat restricting flow) and the return so it will start flowing through the cooler

Have you had any problems? Is the oil radiator broken ?

I am curious how much of a restriction that thermostat is even when the oil is cold, and if it causes oil to constantly circulate through the cooler even when cold. I have to assume that it is an unjustified worry of mine as these thermostats have been used for many years on race cars with no issues!
@hakonhalldorsson6673
@hakonhalldorsson6673 Ай бұрын
I don't think it flows thru cooler when cold. If you think about it, when open, there is oil flowing thru the open thermostat to the other side of the sandwich plate. There, as before, it sees 2 possible ways forward, into the filter or thru the other line to the oil cooler. Which means there is the same pressure on each side of the oil cooler and so no pressure differential to create a flow. The only pressure differential is towards the other side of the filter, so it will only go there.

Thanks for sharing, youre right not a lot on web. Just a question. Does it matter what lines from the cooler go into the plate? Through the cooler is hot oil and cooled oil.
@gt86dude16

No it doesn't matter at all. The cooler itself doesn't have any direction.

what are the benefits of having a oil cooler? and where would you mount it?
@MiataMods
@MiataMods 7 жыл бұрын
The benefit, obviously, is to cool down the oil. Now in normal cars that it not necessary but if you would, let's say, run a turbo setup the oil will run through the turbo as well and heat up quite quickly. Then it is necessary to cool the oil down with a external element, like an oil cooler. The cooler needs to be mounted where there is a lot of air flow so it can disperse the heat, just like the radiator. Most of the times people mount the oil cooler either in front or behind the radiator. I hope this helps!
