As a long-time nuclear power plant operator, I have to say this was actually a very good explanation of the BF3 proportional detectors used in many nuclear plants to measure reactor power when operating at very low power levels. We use BF3 counters to detect and measure neutrons that escape the reactor. The neutrons interact with the boron coating to produce an ionized lithium nucleus, an alpha particle, and 5 electrons. The positively charged lithium and alpha particle are attracted to one terminal and the electrons are attracted to the other, and a voltage is measured. In our case, detector voltage is low enough that the detector does not continuously discharge, but rather produces a pulse for each neutron interaction. The circuitry counts the pulses, and our meters give an output to tell how many neutrons are being detected each second. But other than that, you actually just described source range nuclear instrumentation used in nuclear power plants.

I remember being mesmerized by the PKE meter in the real ghosbusters cartoon. "Holy cow, it's in full color!" back in the 80's any screen that small being in color was a technological marvel.

In ghostbusters afterlife. The PKE meter had a brief moment where if it had a high reading it could be used as a tazer against ghosts. However it only happened when there was a terror dog

I read on the wiki and theres apparently a button on the back of this upgraded pke meter that switches it to taser mode.

@@Timeward76 it's probably mixed between auto and manual, when u expect the ghost u use manual to open it first, but when u don't see it at first it will automatically open

Today, we use EMF detectors like on Ghost Adventures and other ghost hunter KZfaq channels. So I would not be surprised if Egon refined the research into a PKE meter.

The term PKE was used in the first film. Near the start of the film after Peter's ESP test. Ray comes in to get some gear, and he tells Peter about what happened. Then after Peter says to get back to him, Ray says "Spengler went down there. He took PKE valences, went right off the top of the scale. Buried the needle. We're close on this one, I can feel it."

my only ponder on the pke meter is how the atoms mentioned can (in the real ghostbusters cartoon) overload when picking up if i'm mistaken norse deity energy from a script that caused it to explode like a bomb

I’ve always wondered something on the rooftop temple egon uses a gamma rate meter to take readings and found some bad readings my question is what purpose would a device designed to measure radiation actually serve when hunting ghosts is there like some form of radiation level shift that happens with certain ghosts or is it just something else altogether in the film that works more like a emf detector you see in ghost hunting shows with the needle that indicates the level of emf readings

That's largely why I'm not ready to completely dismiss the possibility of ghosts, and I doubt I ever will be. It's possible that what we call "ghosts" are something completely different than what we think, and it's very likely that we simply lack the technology to properly identify or observe the entities and the part of reality they inhabit. I'm open to the idea that there are other aspects of reality besides the mere physical that we have yet to encounter and it boggles my mind that people who claim to respect science state with absolute certainty that the physical material realm is the _only_ reality. That's not a scientific mindset if you ask me, that sounds more like a religious mindset of "my beliefs are the only true and real beliefs and anyone who disagrees is a heretic".

@@Dargonhuman Reminds me of a _Stargate SG-1_ where a device they found allowed a "bleed-through" of life forms that existed in a parallel dimension to ours. Come into contact with the machine (or someone else who had) and the charge was imparted to you, letting you see these creatures, and they were translucent like ghosts. They could even interact with objects in our dimension to a limited degree, like sitting on desks or walking across tables.

@@joshdavis416 Well technically the time line is GB1, TRGB, then GB2, TEGB then GB:A. The real Ghostbusters picks up literally right after the movie, the first episode deals with them having to bust "evil" versions of themselves that were made from the Gozer PKE that had saturated their original boilersuits, Egon makes the new boilersuits, the cartoony color ones that supposedly have PKE repealing lining in them in an effort to prevent another situation like that again. Anyway, the entire cartoon's story happens and sometime after the cartoon ends, Peck manages to get the GBs shutdown and have a restraining order put on them, which is why they get nailed for violating said order in GB2 and have to go to court. Which in that movie gets reversed, then the story of GB2 happens. after that, they have a smaller career which eventually results in the set up for Afterlife. now while never said in that movie, there is nothing in that movie that says that The Extreme Ghostbusters couldn't have also happened. Egon was older but not grizzled like in Afterlife. So you could say TEGB happened but like before the lowered PKE potentials means less ghosts manifesting and thus little to no business and eventually the TEGB crew moves on, then Egon could have gone rogue the way he did and it still make sense for afterlife.

I noticed you've dine some great videos on the Ghostbusters video game and between you guys and my girlfriend playing Phasmaphobia (a paranormal investigation game), I actually really want to play it now.
