The U.S. Army Presidential Salute Battery (Guns Platoon) is an element of the 3rd United States Infantry Regiment. The battery, which is staffed by soldiers qualified as MOS 11C (Mortarman), is chiefly responsible for firing ceremonial gun-salute honors in general officer funerals and retirements, on state occasions, and in a tactical capacity, is tasked with providing the regiment's indirect fire support.
Activated in 1953, the Presidential Salute Battery is equipped with ten 3-inch Gun M5s which have been mounted on M6 howitzer carriages. The M5 is a World War II-era anti-tank weapon.
The battery renders gun salutes according to a customary order of arms which is 21 rounds for heads of state (including the president of the United States and former presidents); 19 for the vice-president of the United States, foreign chiefs of government, and members of the cabinet of the United States; and 17, 15, 13, and 11 for flag officers of the rank of O-10, O-9, O-8, and O-7, respectively.
Under an 1890 regulation issued by the United States Department of War, the "Salute to the Union" consists of one round for every state of the United States, or 50 rounds since 1959; it is fired by the battery annually at noon on U.S. Independence Day. The Presidential Salute Battery fires blank artillery rounds packed with a 1.5 pound powder charge.

I was part of a US army change of command ceremony that was to use a cannon. They told us it would be fired during the event but neglected to tell us that it would be actually fired during the practice, we were under the impression that it would be a dry run. Several companies worth of soldiers simultaneously jumped when the gun was fired, to be followed by nervous laughter. Good times.

I really enjoyed watching this. My father was a gunner, and then gun commander on an M5 3" gun in WWII. They knocked out thirteen tanks, and numerous other vehicles, as well as provide indirect fire support during the campaigns in Northern Europe (mostly attached to the 28th Infantry Division). They were even required to field-strip their guns (up to, and including removal of the gun tube and breech ring) by a somewhat zealous battalion commander between engagements once. Daddy had some interesting stories about their combat. His unit was the 630th TD Battalion. In early 1945, they were switched to M36 self-propelled guns, with which they finished out the war. Loved going to their reunions after the war. I'm so glad the M5 was chosen for the role of ceremonial artillery. It is a handsome field piece.

Ah yes! I do remember this... At Aberdeen Proving Grounds Maryland, I was the NCOIC of the Ordnance Corps M101, 105mm salute howitzer battery for 3-years. It was a lot of fun to go boom, but oh the headaches in drill practice, maintenance, rehearsals for ceremonies (at least 10 a year) and running or own dedicated ammunition bunker atop being a Senior Service School Instructor/Platoon Sergeant. And I'd do it all again in a heartbeat. The Men and Women I served with were all dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers who under went a rigorous selection process to be selected. It was my distinct honor to lead and serve with them.

In Sweden the most common fixed saluting gun is the 57mm m/89 quick firing gun that was first put on ships in the 1880's but had a very long career.

In my opinion, It should be a 21 gun salute for the gentleman/woman that gave their lives in combat. Anyone in government that isn't a veteran doesn't deserve this honor, imo.

Did you know "Presidential Salute Battery" is not an official title name of any U.S. military unit and both "Escort to the President" and "The Old Guard" are both unofficial "nicknames" and "battery" refers to guns and not the personnel manning them? And that the entire "unit" is the Third Infantry Regiment?

Not sure what's more odd; the choice of guns or that they are crewed by 11C mortarmen instead of 13B cannon crewmen.

@@jarink1 The army had a lot of M5's left over after WWII, it uses a smaller charge than a 105 but the report is loud enough. The use of a mortal crew is because that is what is assigned to the "Old Guard". They operate 81mm mortars.
