The Three Stooges were a touchstone of American comedy. In a near 50-year span from 1922 to 1970, their vaudeville humor had a profound impact on the industry. Their slapstick physical humor is among the most memorable elements of American comedy.

What you may not realize is, though they were called The Three Stooges, it was not always the same actors. Throughout their filmography, there were many changes and change backs in the cast. In the 190 films, the stooges were played by six different actors.
This video will examine how each of The Three Stooge actors died.
Moe Howard was the first member of The Three Stooges. He started as a heckler on the Tom Healy show. This bowl-cut buffoon had such success in the role that he brought his brother Shemp on board. As a founding member, Moe stayed with the team throughout their entire 50-year run.
Larry Fine was the second major member of the team. Larry fell into the natural position as the straight man. He would act as the go-between and sometimes the voice of reason for the bickering brothers. Larry was also stuck with the group until his death.
Though Moe, Larry, and Shemp were the original members, others joined. Joe Besser, Joe DeRita, and Curly Howard. Played parts. Health issues and deaths of team members kept the cast in the constant shuffle over the years.
However, no matter who was on the squad, they always offered their signature comedic style that lasted decades.
These were the lives and deaths of the six men who took a turn as a member in this outfit. Each of their contributions was memorable in the legacy of one of the greatest comedy troupes of all time-- The Three Stooges.

I always liked Larry best. While the talents of Moe and Curly are obvious, Larry had this air of the common man being assaulted by the slings and arrows of life in the 20th century that hit home. But, really, it's the synergy of the ensemble that is the best character.

The fact that we're still talking about them some 90 years after the first "Three Stooges" short came out is proof of how timeless their comedy is. My son is 20 now and we've spent an awful lot of time together over the last 15 years or so watching the Stooges and laughing like maniacs...

Larry's damaged cheek was the reason Besser didn't want slaps. Eye pokes, head-raps, and belly punches were still ok with him. No one took pain better than Larry. He always had an anguished look when his hair was pulled-out, his head has planed... In short, his mugging was hilarious. Larry sometimes had to turn from the camera when Shemp did his schtick- watch the scene when Shemp poses as a dentist and yanks a man's tooth- Larry breaks-up.

The lineup up Moe, Curly and Larry were my favorites. Shemp was funny as well, but I feel Curly was the best of the 3 ever. There is just nothing like Moe, Curly and Larry. I don’t think the stooges could ever have been as good as they were without Larry. Larry’s role was extremely important in the group and they could NEVER have done without his amazing talent as well imho. R.I.P. to all of these great comedians! I loved the Stooges growing up, and I still do. One of the few shows I can watch a million times and never get tired of them. Agree completely. The layers underneath the obvious slapstick are what makes them appealing to all ages. I remember watching as a child with my dad and there was a reference to a character Baron of Graymatter. I didn't understand why my dad laughed at that and then he explained it meant 'brainless' as in barren of grey matter( brains). I have fond memories of my dad when I see the Stooges.

I didn't really watch 3 Stooges much growing up in the 90s, but some of my favorite memories with the show was during some 2-3 week hospital visits, one of the janitors would come into my room and sit with me for a little while and watch the show after he finished cleaning. One of the highlights of my day, and favorite hospital staff members ever, going above and beyond doing what he can to made the kids happy. He would surprise me with stuff from events going on downstairs, get me involved in Bingo, or sneak me McDonalds when he got off work. When Curly was no longer able to be a part of the show, Moe pleaded with Shemp to return until Curly was feeling better. But sadly, Curly passed away in 1950 and Shemp remained as the permanent replacement for Curly. At least until Shemp passed away in 1955 at 60 years old.

The Three Stooges were a t.v. staple in our household when I was a kid. I always got a kick out of watching them, but sometimes I use to get mad seeing Moe bully the others so much, lol. That was my childhood too. Filled with many great gut busting moments of laughter thanks to these guys. And also thanks to my grandmother and mother who adored them, especially my grandma. She was almost fanatical about the Stooges and was the primary reason I got to experience their incredible comedy as a kid. They'll always be the funniest show and act I have ever seen. That's almost certainly never to change. I could still crack up like a kid watching them today. And if reruns are on, my 58 year old father will laugh his ass off to the Stooges along side me today just like when I was a kid.

I used to like them when I was much younger but cannot tolerate them now. They are more like a parody of a comedy team and a bad one at that. They can't compare to real comedy teams like the Marx Brothers, Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello etc. Also they couldn't match the single performers such as W.C. Fields, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and many others. Moe was the worst with his physical abuse and Curly was over-rated in my opinion. Slapstick might be ok in small doses but they overdid it but what irritates me the most are the accidental mishaps. They can't go 5 seconds without bumping into each other or walking into a wall etc. Really? What I did like about their films were some of the supporting actors.

He likely would have lived longer. He had very high blood pressure and we didn’t have oral antihypertensive medications back then. Hydralazine was one of the first to be introduced in 1953. He apparently lived excessively, like so many back then with alcohol and nicotine. Coupled with hypertension, he was doomed. It’s crazy to think president Roosevelt was given a clean bill of health with a BP of 220/120. He died a few years laster. Having high blood pressure back before the 50s was a death sentence for many.

Sorry for this 2nd comment, but when I was a new RN, I was assigned to caring for a young man who was shot by police after an armed robbery. He had been admitted after surgery and my coworkers said that he was nasty and that he'd make mincemeat of me. I went to see him first. He was very quiet. He wanted the TV on. The Three Stooges was on. In seconds, we were both laughing hard! 🤣 We talked about our favorite episodes and we had the same favorite. For the rest of the day, when it was time to change his dressings and give him meds, we would talk and laugh about the Stooges. It was sad when he was discharged straight to the police and to the county jail to await trial. He was very young and ran with a violent crowd. He thanked me for treating him just like other people and saw his humanity. He promised me that he'd get out of the gang life after serving his sentence. I don't know if he made good on his promise, but I hope so.

Moses Howard wanted really bad and tried very hard to get Dudly Dickerson to be a third Stooge, and it would have worked and it would have kept these guys going, however Hollywood wouldn't permit Moe to have Dudley Dickerson as a third Stooge. Probably, out of pure speculation, because at that time the Amos and Andy show was considered by the colored folks out there as a slap in the face making people think that people of color are dumb and stupid, and were not to be taken seriously and that they were viewed as nothing but Uncle Tom's. So, the restriction of having Dudley Dickerson as a third Stooge was something that would be unwanted controversy, and cause protests and riots.

I STILL WATCH THEM EVERY SATURDAY ON METV AT 6PM EST. AFTER ALL THESE YEARS. I REMEMBER AS A KID COMING HOME AND WATCHING THEM AFTER SCHOOL, AND THEN CARTOONS, BEFORE DOING MY HOMEWORK. THOSE WERE THE GOOD OLE DAYS.

I watched these fellas as a kid and thought they were hilarious! Of course all I was able to really grasp was the slapstick humor. As an adult, watching them now...it's funnier than EVER! All the "over the head" stuff as a kid makes these fellas 10x's funnier now!

I was born in 1959 and watched the 3 Stooges on TV any time I could as a kid. After school, I'd go home and turn on the TV to watch Popeye cartoons and the 3 Stooges. To this day, I can think of no comedian or comedy act funnier or more original that these guys. IMO, Curley was the absolute funniest of the team. His antics are timeless.

"Do you think their style of comedy is timeless?" Let's see. You've seen the bit 1,000 times. You know exactly what they're gonna say & how they're gonna say it. Yet, you still laugh out loud at the punch line. Yup, it's timeless.

The Stooges were Legends. I never cared much for Joe (as you said, he never really felt like he "fit"), but all the other Stooges were great. When I was younger I really like Curly, but as I got older Moe and Shemp kinda tie as my favorites. Especially Moe's "Stern Sillyness".

I watched reruns of the Stooges every day after school. I always liked Shemp the best, but I could never figure out if he was before Curly or after. Now I know, it was both. I had a school friend who used to do Curly inspired routines. Never was attacked by a clam in my chowder, but that gag slayed me! To this day I still find myself humming their version of “The Three Blind Mice” as their intro.

@Chris Hamilton Interesting subject. I agree with you on we are spirits experiencing human life. All things considered, I don't think most people go to hell, but the ones have been evil. The ones who have caused a lot of damage, sorrow, distress, and suffering. There are still a lot of good people who deserve a second chance and, consequently, come back and do better 'cause they keep experiences and abilities developed in their first life. Won't you agree?

This video is completely wrong. Curly died by being whacked in the face with an ironing board as Moe stuck his fingers in Curly's nose. Larry died when Curly shot an arrow out of a toaster that hit Larry in the face; Curly was standing on Larry's head at the time. Moe is immortal.

I think it was when Larry had to leave the group, Emil Sitka was brought in as a replacement. Sitka was a character actor that appeared in many of the Stooges' shorts. I remember seeing a publicity photo of this new Stooges lineup, but nothing ever came of it.
