@@SirAntoniousBlock More of a footballing culture I accept, but Croatia also play at a reasonably high level in other sports like handball, basketball, and ice hockey. I accept that GAA and rugby pull from the talent pool, but I'm not sure how significant that really is, as if there are World Cup standard footballers playing Gaelic football for Kerry or hurling for Kilkenny. We have had some exciting tournament appearances in the past, but they are a distant memory for most now, and as an example, pretty much anyone under about 12 years of age won't be old enough to properly remember Ireland at an international tournament at this point. In my view, the big problem is a structural or organisational one. The FAI has historically been a mess, and the best way to see real change is to invest heavily and invest carefully in youth development, which can be a bit of a difficult pill to swallow, given that you are unlikely to see results for at least a decade. I understand that government funding is split between lots of different sports in Ireland, but again, unfortunately, to put it lightly, the FAI has not used their funding well in recent history. It becomes a question of not asking what we can't do, but rather what we can do with the resources at our disposal. The work that Iceland put in to reach the quarterfinals of the Euros in 2016 and to qualify for the World Cup in 2018 is a great example of what can be achieved (I think TIFO Football have a good video about it), but that was also a case of sowing seeds that had been planted many years earlier.

I agree with you, and have never booed, but having attended loads of games at this Euros, it's weird how loads of countries boo their opponent's national anthems (some much more vociferously than England fans), but only England fans ever seem to get pulled up on it. Even at this game, it happened during both anthems!

@@HITCSevens I have noticed other fans having done the same. The reason why the English gets called out for it, more than others, I'd venture a guess, has to do with them also doing it, very noticably, at the last Euros. Where this disrepect has come from, regardless of who started it, it needs to stop.

England have managed to get to the final despite the bad tactical setup and execution from the manager. The first half we finally had wide players taking it to the byline, taking the defence on through the middle, trippier actually looking forward and kicking the ball with his left foot for once. Southgate thought this was a problem at half time and hooked trippier for shaw who spent the second half getting the ball in advanced positions and passing backwards. Harry Kane is clearly not match fit but Southgate keeps him in the starting xi. If koeman had started veerman and got a bit more set piece chaos going the Dutch might have won this one.

tbf if we're talking about "deserve" based on previous performance you could say we "deserved" it more. I don't think that myself tho. Also Koeman seems to be able to make good, or at least decent, substitutions and adaptations, but never start a game strong. Our team also looked exceptionally tired so I think he should have made more aggressive substitutions in that last game.

Whole time commentators were talking about his "aggressive substituting" but he did it at the worst possible time. Imagine having to go on 60 seconds before the end of stoppage time only to see England tear out your side netting and make the game 2-1 in their favour.

Yeah, we DEFINITELY were not robbed. It's just having such a decision makes it unsatisfying to lose. Not that losing is ever great, but losing a good game can be fun in its own way. It was a good game, but it does feel uncomfortable to lose in such a way.
