Ever since Sir Alex Ferguson departed Manchester United the club has struggled to find a successful manager. That is until this season and the arrival of Erik ten Hag. The dutchman has revolutionised the way United play. Seemingly overnight he has moved the team from a counter-attacking style under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, to a possessional style similar to the Ajax team he created.
So how has he done it? Which players have improved the most? How far are United from challenging the very best clubs?
Jon Mackenzie explains. Henry Cooke illustrates.

The signing of Casemiro can’t be understated. A huge problem under Ole was the ease with which teams could transition into directly attacking our centre backs and his commanding presence in midfield has played a massive role in helping us in all phases of play.

That was their main issue. The midfield was terrible. And it made McGuire look even worse than he was. And the attack would struggle without midfield control. Casemiro completely turned it around. Nothing to do with Ten Hag

ETH had a rough start, and he saw fit to fix the cracks right away, benching a fatigue and low confidence maguire, tackling the Ronaldo situation with letting him go and even giving Sancho space to recover from mental health. In this time he made utd dominant in midfield, gave us the unlikely partnership of Licha x Varane (which is simply world class) and has made rashford a baller again. If he keeps doing this and everyone stands behind him he could be the next SAF and stay with us for years bring back the dominate utd once more.

Combine that with being a discplinarian, but also protecting his players from public scrutiny. He's done a great job off the pitch and in the dressing room. The connection between fans and team is of little importance. I'm sure clubs like Leeds and Southampton can also have connections between fans and players. The most important aspect is the actual quality on the pitch. Players like Varane, Martinez, Shaw & Dalot playing regularly have added much needed quality from the back. The expensive acquisitions of Casemiro & Antony have helped tremendously. Eriksen has added outstanding quality in the middle of the park. Fan support is peripheral

@@Daryl_sniper24 I don't think anthony was ever available for 45 mil. since last winter already ajax never wanted him to go for less than 80 and also didn't want him to leave at all in the first place which created friction between the player and club. Ajax really made it difficult for the negotiations to happen and only let anthony leave for an exorbitant amount.

The important key to MU's revival in my opinion : ✔️ The arrival of Erik Ten Hag. Ten Hag brings new tactics that are suitable for MU's game. He is also very disciplined & strict to his players ✔️ Ronaldo's exit. The weakness of the previous coach was when the ball must always be aimed at Ronaldo & Ronaldo must always be played. That causes monotonous tactics & many failures due to inaccurate passes to Ronaldo. ✔️ Harry Maguire's benched. In the past, Harry Maguire always made a lot of mistakes for the team. As captain, he showed a lot of poor performance ✔️ Bringing in quality players. Casemiro & Martinez are one of MU's most successful purchases, they are now an important part of the team ✔️ Other factors : Bruno is a better captain than Maguire. MU's more flexible & flowing game. The rise of young talents like Rasford & Garnacho. And etc. THANK YOU Erik Ten Hag for bringing good changes to Manchester United💯🏆

I have been a Man Utd fan for 30 years and a football fan for a little longer. Until ETH came to United, I didn't really see the influence a manger could bring. After all, it's the players who play, make decisions on the field and ultimately, win or lose a game. But that way of thinking has honestly been destroyed now. The choices he has made, the players he has brought in and the approach to training, discipline and effort have made a huge difference to this team. Now I really understand why the right manager can be worth 10 wins a season. Ragnick also has to take some praise though. He came into the club, saw how bad things were and exposed the entire backroom issues which cost him his job. Had it not been for his willingness to change things, we would still be struggling with behind the scenes issues and not have ETH here.

it's a bit of both. A coach can cause chaos. They are more like cheerleaders with a certain tactic. If they can make the players and the crowd happy while promoting a strategy, they can win - against the odds. You see the same in war. The General can make a world of difference. Even with mediocre material.

and you can spend billions on 11 proud egomaniacs... and get nowhere. Especially with older players it become harder to 'play' them. To make them, or guide them into doing what you want, effectively. That's why Ronaldo and Maguire had to go before Ten Hag could begin. Without leadership, you can get a bunch of alpha figures fighting each other - instead of the 'enemy'.

Think he has done an incredible job, and deserves massive credit. I think he has made Man United defensively very solid, had confidence to twist and remove players, and it has really helped. Man United made a great decision signing him early in 2022, so gave him the chance to visualize the team, and give his ideas to the board before moving in the summer, and meant that key targets were bought, and his style could be implemented early. The only aspect I think needs work on is on the attacking front. Rashford seems to be on fire at the moment, and usually individual brilliance is getting them the result. That can work for a while, but I'd like to see more dominance in games

@@michaeldimas9805 you Cannot come 3rd and 2nd in a league by just saying “go express yourselves”. Maybe it’ll work in a cup competition but not in a 38-game league. Ole’s United were fun to watch. The players made many off the ball runs and were good in a medium to low block. He made United watchable again. That that first month of Ole’s 3rd season, we were top of the league. Then the Board signed Ronaldo, and everything went into disarray including Ronaldo bandwagon fans piling unnecessary pressure on the club whenever he was not playing the full 90 minutes (aka Everton 1-1 game).
@yunfun.8893
@yunfun.8893 Жыл бұрын
@@shahzadirani Yes you can especially when United were awarded like 25 penalties across Ole's two seasons, and loads of debatable VAR decisions were present whilst Ole was managing those two seasons. Ole's United were an individual brilliance team for sure, that's why he eventually got sacked, because eventually reality would kick in & you need tactics to win titles and trophies, which Ole lacked. That's why an average Villarreal side were able to outclass expensive Man United in the Europa League final, because Unai Emery is a better manager. Ole also failed to sign a competent starting midfielder for 3 years and persisted with McFred whilst Ten Hag immediately addressed the midfield issue in his first season. Ole apologists are hilarious with the excuses they make. Ronaldo was an issue yes, but you cannot blame a striker for a team's lack of defensive discipline - when they got piped 4-2 by Leicester, 4-1 by Watford, 5-0 by Liverpool, you cannot "blame" that on Ronaldo. You blame that on Ole not realising how important a defensive midfielder is in a football system.

Weghorst was not brought to provide a lot of goals, but to relieve Rashford from a lot dirty work. At least that is what weghorst did all his career, a highly underrated player if you ask me. He is not flashy, he will not bag a lot of goals, damn he is even realy slow for a striker but he will make it easier for his partners in crime to play the game, and get the fame. Every one loves to have such a workhorse in the team. Besides that if ten Hag benches him for 4 matches in a row, he will not whine but pushes his team mates in training to keep them sharp.

ETH is the best person to lead the club forward. Mourinho's was always going to be a short-term success but Ole's appointment never made sense in the first place everyone just rolled along the "Ole's at the wheel" bandwagon. ETH's press conferences are a delight to watch and show his clarity and conciseness. The team is looking to give their 100% each game and that's a positive. The next few months and the apparent sale are crucial for the summer transfer window.

I really think everything wrong with man utd has to do with Ed Woodward. This man fires the manager left and right, not backing them in the transfer window. Ole wanted a midfielder, CB, striker, and Sancho. He got Varane, Sancho, and Ronaldo as final-day signings, thanks to Sir Alex. Jose was publicly "whining" about wanting more players before he was sacked. The same goes for Van Gaal (fired after winning the FA cup) and Moyes, who only got Fellani.
