I actually bought and "played" with a .177 air gun a few years ago. It was a good powerful Diana wooden gun. It tore through tomato cans like butter at 20 meters. I was surprised. Accurate too.

I have the Gamo Swarm Magnum .22 rifle. That thing is no joke!!!! At 40 yards I've punched through stainless steel cookie pans with hollow point ammo. Took out a woodchuck at 30 yards and the pellet was a complete pass through and kept going until it hit the ground. So yes a pellet gun that generates enough velocity can kill you.

Keep in mind using wood to represent killing power isn’t entirely accurate. That’s assuming the shot must penetrate a skull or chest plate bone. A hit in a artery such as in the NECK could kill at a much further distance than using wood as the standard. Didn’t make it thought the wood at 75....but you can bet a neck hit at 100 yards would kill without quick medical help. Probably would kill hitting a neck much further than that too. Try a thin piece of rubber at 150 yards to represent neck skin penetration and a artery. Would be interesting to see!

will edwards It's impossible to penetrate 3/4 inch pine wood with 12 ftlb. I have done this tests too. The only rifles that can are my .22 magnum 31 ftlb and my .25 magnum 31 ftlb. Look at those holes in the video..those are drilled holes. I don't understand the point to make a video like this.. Because it's not real..

Think you and others below losing your mind. It's in between its not a toy nor a real gun. And they are taking nothing away. As a hunter myself these types weapons are being used for what their designed for hunting. They are designed for varmint control some can be used on hogs too. But better check laws before hunting bigger game with them as some states only allow .22 and above

Mike I agree, politicians could misconstrue this. But I would like to point out that the OP's gun looks like a 1st-gen NP, which should be rated at 18 FPE, not 12. That said, it does look bad reaching out to 75 yards. The longest I have taken was at about 67 yards on pigeons and dropped them dead, but I did a lot of research and pratice before I took those shots, and honestly I felt froggy doing that with a "1200 fps" air rifle, but it worked... But for my own conscience, I don't think I would push the range farther than that or even that same distance again. I wouldn't recommend it to the average shooter.

Wood density varies from one spot to the next. You needed more than one shot at 75 yards - there's a good chance it would still penetrate.

Just purchased an air rifle, fun to do a bit of target shooting on the cheap. It is also part of my prepper plan, the ability to take small game such as rabbits, as well as birds without drawing to much attention to myself. Live in a rural area we got plenty of both. I figure 50 yards would be my maximum shooting distance.

Good demonstration and good for people to know that todays air guns are not kids toys (and certainly not your Daisy Red Rider BB gun). If you shot Crosman 10.5 grain you would have slower velocity at the muzzle but about the same energy at 75 yards but might make it through the board because it is a little heavier and wouldn't stop as quickly. At 75 yards you would have about 4.5 foot pounds of energy using your 7.4 grain pellets with 875 muzzle velocity and 12.5 fpe at the muzzle. May not kill you but it would hurt like crazy. A PCP shooting a 15.8 grain .177 cal at 900 fps would have about 4.5 foot pound of energy at around 268 yards (it possibly would get through the board at 268 yards simply because of it's weight - not gonna want to stop as quickly).. That develops a little over 28 fpe at the muzzle.. Heck at 75 yards it would have 16.2 fpe.. and at 100 yards still has 13.7 fpe. Certainly, nothing you want to take for granted as being a kids toy..

Shouldn't the exit hole be bigger than the entrance hole? I have a .22 17ft/lb gun and it has a hard time punching clean holes through 3/4" pine board from 20yds. From 10yrds it can punch clean holes through an old 1/2" board. And when they do go through the 3/4" board the exit hole is massive and has splintering

To increase the speed of your 177. pellet add a drop of diesel in the hollow base of the pellet . Pressure compression will cause ignition and increase you're feet per second . A drawback will be increased wear , the advantage will be full penetration past 75yrds .

I guess they say this because a board is about the same hardness as a skull. This can fit as a good first test but it is certainly not all. Most fabrics are stopping pellets, I make my pellets catchers out of old clothes packed in a box most don't even pass trough the first pair of jeans. For me the best test would be to put rags on a recently deceased pig and test out as many velocities, calibers, distances and pellets as possible.

My dad was a career cop. One day, he got dispatched to show up where a man was mowing his lawn, and two teenage kids were driving down the road "having fun" and shot at him once with an old Crosman 760. At ~600 fps, the pellet penetrated between the man's ribs and hit his heart. He was flatlined/dead before the ambulance made it to the hospital. Estimated distance was about 33 yards. It just goes to show that anything can be lethal even for the most wrong of reasons. This video does show how serious that can be, but I would also encourage people not to watch this and think that a "humane" kill is always achievable at 50 or 75 yards. Personally, I would never stand downrange from my own air rifle at that distance and pretend I would never get hurt, because I would, but inflicting a consistent humane kill at 75 yards with a 1000 fps air rifle is not a guarantee. First, there is a lot of energy-loss at that range. Second, domed pellets would be your best bet for accuracy at that distance, although pointed pellets provide better penetration. The problem is, pointed pellets will ALMOST NEVER hit a 4" wide target at 75 yards. Ever, unless you have a steady arm and zero wind. Especially free-hand. So... Sorry, but I am calling some BS here. I am not questioning penetration, but I am just trying to state the obvious on what is humane and smart, and what is not.
@cedricwebb5576
@cedricwebb5576 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with you 100% sir. If we think logically, then there's no need to question this video or call him out on anything. It's obvious that a 50 yard hit with an air rifle will vary and it's very unlikley that a kill will be posdible. It's hard about to get a 50 plus yard kill with a high power center fire rifle. I've spend 7 years in The US Marine Corps. Ive fired plenty of weapons. Thorough it all,, ain't no way I'd attempt a 50 yard shot at any living creature with an air rifle. I'm not doubting this fella,, I just wouldn't attempt it.

If you want more power and surely penetrate that board at 75 (or more) yards fill the rear opening of the pellet with a dab of Vaseline. The science is simple. Extreme air pressure will raise the temp real fast. (Think Diesel engine). That Vaseline will become a gas instantly and push the pellet REALLY fast. Doing this many many times will burn out your barrel but just for seeing how far it will do harm is not a problem. If you know how to change barrels you can do a destruct test so you know it's limitations. Then replace the barrel and move on from there. Great for hunting at longer distances.

I've been shooting, tuning and testing air rifles for the past 20 years and there is no way a .177 pellet at 12 ft lbs will penetrate a 3/4 inch board at 50 yards. Think you need to re check the power of that rifle. Also, it's well documented that domes pellets will out penetrate a pointed pellet.

After reading some comments of doubting the Penetration, it should be noted there are many different types and conditions of wood, even lumber pine. A standardized material such as balistics gel would reveal a more standardized result. Nevertheless, this Penatration test reveals the producer's main point of safety. If a .177 or bigger pellet, leaving the muzzel at 875 fps, hits a person, even at the extraordinary distance of 75 yards, it's a .Serious. development.

I agree. I have shot 1/2" plywood at 30 yards and never found the pellet, it blew right through it with a 3/4" exit. I shot a new green-treated 4"x4" at the same distance and buried pellets over 3/4" into it. Then I shot a piece of hardened deck-board at the same distance, and half the pellet seemed to dissintograte on impact, while the other half literally bounced backwards towards me. A consistent medium such as a ballistic gel would be a good starting point with this video, as we'll as a wider gap in pellet selection.

I'm sure it would, typical gain is 200-250 fps in a pellet rifle. mine claims 1100 to start with, and been unwittingly dieseling for years! have ALWAYS kept my pellets wet in WD-40, so there is always about 1/4 drop in the deepest part back side of the pellets. figured lubed barrel helps velocity a little, that the film of oil helped for less air/gas escaping past the skirting of the pellet too... I've only recently seen videos of the real potential of it giving a combustion assist. neat stuff!!

Matter of fact I didn't even realize for a bit that I was even shot. I heard the gun fire and stood up from a bending position and then went back to what I was doing, chasing a crawdad lol. Couple of minutes later I just had a strange kinda numbness feeling in my leg and starting looking and found a hole in my pants leg. Yup, it didn't stop there. Missed the bone barely and woulda been hell to pay if it hadn't I'm sure. Doctor sent me home with a tetanus shot. Leg swelled about twice normal and turned black and left me on crutches for a couple of weeks. Ain't hardly like it is in the movies. lol Sux but not what you might think. You should try testing out the penetration potential of those .177 sabot pellets, you know the ones with the plastic shell and the hard zinc, pointed bullet in the middle. I tested those with a simple Daisy 880 (about 700fps this these), and they EASILY punched holes straight through a thick metal frying pan at 10 yards. Regular pointed lead pellets only dented it. Steel BB's also just made dents. Anyway, I then tried shooting them through 1/2" pine boards, again at 10 yards, and it went through 3 of them and dented the 4th board.
@sammyhooligan803
@sammyhooligan803 2 жыл бұрын
Your right compared to all lead pellets i tried ,the RWS non-lead polymer / zinc pointed tip .22 cal. pellets had the best penetration . I used this ammo out of my Beeman .22/.177 combo break barrel riflle shooting at sheet metal targets at 25 yards. Every shot completely went through. So i think increased velocity because of a lighter weight non-lead pellet and i added a few drops of pell gun oil to lightly cover each pellet in container, possibly could have been dieseling effect too. Anyhow , these are great pellets when needed .
@Dynaolsson
@Dynaolsson 2 жыл бұрын
What they use for penetration test is more of a plywood board, your piece is solid wood and even harder to shoot through than a board...it is also thicker than half an inch, so the results here are actually understated imo. Nice vid.
@garychandler4296
@garychandler4296 Жыл бұрын
As a carpenter/airgunner, I'll say that the reason martial artists use solid wood and not plywood, is because you can't really break plywood with your fist. I have 3/4" ply as my catchbox backstop where I use guns up to my Diana Stormrider .22 pcp, and although it easily blows thru tin cans, it doesn't penetrate after going through even cardboard at 100' - my home range distance. I'll have to try it with some solid wood, but I bet it penetrates.

If that's the Gammo Hornet, I have the same gun and it shreds anything it hits. Just finished tuning up the scope using an old pine board (.75" x 11.5"W x 24L") as the backer for my target. I'm using same ammo, Crossman .177 point, and never got one to fully penetrate from 15 yards. Board has been wet and dry on and off as I do tile work. Don't know if that made a difference. That all said, when I hit a squirrel (we have tons of them and are a serious nuisance pest and primary reason for air gun purchase) it's one and done for them. Only issue I have with it is the noise it makes. Loud for an air rifle.

His pellet could do that and does do that a 12 foot pounds of energy you got to consider that 177 is only 4.5 mm to give you a comparison if it had a diameter of an itch it would have 1200 foot-pounds of energy but since it's small like 4.5 it only has 12 or 13 foot pounds so that's how a little pellet can do that with such little energy so there's your question answered and yes that guy's telling the truth I've had one of those air rifles it will do that especially if you get Crosman power pellets that are LED free sabot round 8.5 grain it'll be more than even pointed at 7.3 Gr
@hunter100t
@hunter100t 6 жыл бұрын
Yes Crossman Powerpell are probably the best all lead pointed pellets out there with a solid lead head rather than shell like as with other pellets, the smaller the calibre the more penetration you get as the surface area you are shooting is greatly reduced and therefor less energy is needed, eg his rifle is doing 12.5 ftlb in .177 at 875 fps, if he used a .22 doing exactly the same 12.5 ftlb and say a Crossman powerpell weighing 14.3 gr at 628 fps it would go through at 25 yards but not 50 and would only leave a pellets depth hole at 75, so you also see that velocity is also a key factor with penetration and the smaller .177 with its smaller surface area wins here. but the tables turn when the .22 is flying at the same velocity as the .177 as the energy transfer is far greater and will punch deeper into the board at greater distances, bottom line for shooting small game, the .177 has a flatter trajectory and penetrates deeper at energy levels up to 18 ftlb and over this the .22 takes over and is more efficient.

It's impossible that a 12 fpe .177 air rifle is gonna pierce that pine board. I have done much penetration tests with different air rifles and airguns..different calibers..different pellets. But maybe that pineboard is very old en weak?I don't know.The pineboards we have here are very hard to penetrate..with my high powered air rifles OK..they are 29/31 fpe. But 12 fpe impossible..or your gun is heavily modified? I don't know..I like your videos en I watch a lot and I enjoy. But this one is an big no go. Even with the Hornets or pollymags..12 fpe is not capable to pierce that board. And the holes that I see in that board are so clean..they do not look as the holes that I shooted in wooden boards.. I don't wanna say that you lie OK??Don't understand me wrong. But..12 fpe piercing that board? I have done it with 19 fpe..no succes..at 10 yeard.
