Every night in Australia, thousands of kangaroos are killed. More than 3 million of these iconic marsupials are shot each year. They end up us pet food, soccer boots, or meat for human consumption. Because, amazingly, this slaughter is approved by the government. How can kangaroos be protected species yet still be killed in such numbers? Who’s responsible for this “harvest”? And what might Australia’s sheep farms have to do with it? We explore the rise of an unseen industry, from historical pest control to “k-leather” products.

Hy friends, thanks for watching! To be honest, this was the most controversial topic I've ever worked on! Some people see Kangaroos as protected wildlife, others as pests, and others as a sustainable resource. How do you label kangaroos? What really shocked me was David Brooks "Number Game" and the fact that nobody knows exactly how many animals do exist right now. The actually sighted kangaroos are always adjusted by a correction factor, which is sometimes up to 10 (1x Kangaroo sighted = 10 Kangaroos counted). The report and all other sources are listed in the description above.

I live in Western Australia and I would say the opposite. I lived in regional Australia for over ten years and almost every landowner around me shot kangaroos on their land. None of them bothered asking for permission. I have travelled all over Australia on outback roads by 4wd and sometimes would not see a single roo for weeks. These are of course anecdotes and like all anecdotes, are fairly useless to judge roo populations by. Proper scientific data is what is urgently needed.

Hmm. Now I do disdain country driving.. However having gone across to Kalgoorlie, down to Bunbury, and up to Kalbarri, I would state categorially that particularly the drive to Kalbarri features kangaroos of - and I did eschew the word in my initial comment - utter ubiquity. They are sat by the roadside and unnerve, given their habit of jumping into the way. Roadkill also very common as evidence. Having said that, I do prefer not to long-distance drive, and as such, lack broader experience.

Indigenous people killed kangaroo and "back then people and wildlife lived in harmony". I'd say it's more accurate to say kangaroos lived in an equilibrium created by human demand for meat. Not much harmony in butchery from the kangaroo perspective right or wrong. It was an equilibrium established after the extinction of all other megafauna in Australia from overhunting by the aboriginals, this harmony narrative is essentially that of the peaceful savage
@fritagonia
@fritagonia Жыл бұрын
Yes correct. I was thinking that too. We humans never lived in "harmony" with the environment. Humans killed most or all of the megafauna of Australia, New Zeeland, Madagascar, the Americas etc around 13 000 years to 2 000 years ago. And this problem only got worse when we introduced non-native animals and plants such as sheep, cows and ruminants.

I think it's worth being careful how we talk about this. It's hard not to read this as outsiders getting upset because we're killing cute animals, rather than being about conservation I suspect kangaroo overpopulation is mostly a myth. At the same time most roo species are not in any danger of extinction. I think non-Australians need to be aware of a few things - first kangaroos are made up of many species. It's meaningless to talk about kangaroo conservation without differentiating between them; the range of our big reds is very different to the eastern or western greys for example Second, there is a definite bias in the way we view them. Yes, Australians are biased by seeing them as pests (and a massive danger on the road) but non-Australians also tend to hype roos to a level they don't apply to other less cute or less known. It also matters that we don't frame kangaroos as the ultimate victims, because it diverts attention from the species that are literally going extinct and others that are slaughtered by not just shooters but almost everyone (e.g. snakes - I would argue the most horrendous wildlife slaughter in the entire world is Texas torturing rattlesnakes and painting in their blood) Is the method of roo slaughter unethical? I think absolutely. Is the scale of the killing wrong, I believe yes. But please ask yourself if their cuteness is the reason you care, please don't treat this as the worst ethical offence in the world, and please understand that Australia is literally losing unfathomable numbers of species daily and its hard for us here to see roo culling as a priority when the conservation situation here is so dire.

Kangaroos are intelligent mammals, like us. I don't know how intelligent snakes are, but because I know how intelligent humans are, I know that kangaroos are not as dissimilar from us as many would like to believe. It has nothing to do with being cute. Adult pigs and cows are not particularly cute, yet I feel just as strongly that we should not be abusing them the way that we do.

They are nothing but a spine with a mouth, they can’t really use tools either to display intelligence. I recommend looking into Chris Sweet for his work with king cobras. @@empathy3023 Sustainability is ultimately the goal with things like this. You want to maintain a population that isn't increasing or decreasing beyond what the environment can maintain. Unfortunately, in order to do that, conserving the animal must be profitable. The most soul crushing part of conservation is honestly learning about all the animals that could be saved from extinction, but won't be because there's no financial interest in doing so. Still the biggest F-you I have seen is how my home state in the US refused to reintroduce elk unless there would be enough hunters willing to shoot them. Everywhere you look and see you become aware of the incredible negative impact animal husbandry - let alone the agriculture industry - is having on the environment. So many animals have become extinct or are already extinct because of it. Governments are calling native predators "pests" when they themselves are pests who have cut down native forests, diverted rivers, dried out riverbeds and lakes for irrigation and killed of native animals, plants and insects. Plant-based alternatives are one of the best solutions to much of the problems today. it is the demand for these products that are causing so much problems. And many of the products have labels that dont inform consumers correctly. The companies use euphemisms such as "K-leather, mutton, gelatine, bacon, sausauge" and so forth. So you dont understand the origin.

I have a few criticisms about this video. You didn't sell me on how this is a conservation issue. Knowing that kangaroos reproduce quickly, I assumed that the situation was simular to the coyotes in USA; where they are killed in high numbers but also reproduce so fast that their population is stable. If that were the case then I would argue that its sustainable harvesting, which is what most conservationists ultimately aim for. However, a quick google search brings up a survey which found that 42% of the studied grey kangaroo populations have declined since 2000. Red kangaroos were also nominated for vulnerable status but it was rejected due to a lack of data. It's also recorded that kangaroo populations drop dramatically during droughts and increase slowly, which could also he used to argue against the cull, although AWS says that the cull will fix that by stabilizing their population. You could have also cited the 6 species that went extinct.

First, I really like this Channel, and have been following it for years now. I agree health population management of species by a geo-regional perspective like brought up is absolutely necessary. I also agree with the think tank perspective on any species because governments are usually too slow to react due to bureaucracy and commerce. That said, please work on painting a better picture of the environment scientifically. These numbers could be wrong but from a few quick searches it looks like there are somewhere around 40 to 50 million Kangaroos and they produce on average 2 young per year. Assuming half are female and 20m * 2 would easily cover the harvest that is going on???? This is where I would like more critical analysis! If we want to keep species healthy we cannot present cases like without the necessary metric, when a government or company would simple refer those metrics. I am not pretending to understand this ecosystem, or the situation with kangaroos. I just would like to see more of the universal language of math used. It's a better approach than a quick reference to some papers that may point out alternatives to what the average person can research.

If the harvesting is sustainable, harvesting herbivores can benefit the ecosystem, not harm it. The killing of large predators like the dingo by colonizers allowed herbivore populations to increase without a cap. The herbivores will eat vegetation until it is all gone, and they all starve. Culls can prevent population collapse by mimicking the impact of natural predators. Everyone wants to say "don't hurt these iconic animals" but the if ecosystem is out of balance humans must step in. The roos will breed until they have no food left and all starve, all while de-vegetating the landscape. The disruption to vegetation provides openings for invasive pioneers to take over the landscape and spread across Australia.
@jnkb_9978
@jnkb_9978 Жыл бұрын
Well, that scenario is quite unlikely. Animals don't just overpopulate, destroy a whole ecosystem and then get extinct. It's more like a steady up and down around a certain size of population but the average population size stays the same. People should stop putting themselves above nature and take a closer look and listen, because if we continue to treat nature as we do now, a dark time is coming.

@@terramater Many of the protected species of kangaroo's do not live in the areas where the majority of commercial roo shooting happens. I grew up hunting in the western NSW of Australia, I have ridden my motorbike through paddocks and seen upwards of 500 kangaroo's in a single paddock. Australia is such a vast country and as kangaroo's have such a wide range of habitat an accurate count would be next to impossible. I am not entirely sure if you have ever been to Australia, I would strongly recommend you come here and go to some Stations (what we call large farms) because you will then get a better understanding of the issue we face with kangaroos. Yes the practise can be inhumane but if the populations are not controlled there would be a dramatic increase in numbers. I live in a suburban town of Victoria around 30km east of Melbourne, within 2km of my house there is a population of 20-30 eastern grey kangaroos. A river I fish in around a 5km drive has a population of upwards of 200 kangaroos and this entire area would be considered suburban... Another thing the species distribution maps you showed are out of date, Western Red Kangaroos are not found in eastern Australia. And I am not a monster, my profile picture is me with a kangaroo and has been for several years, they are an amazing animal and an Australian icon but the numbers need to be controlled.

@@DamienBeltrami Hi Damien, thanks for telling your personal insights! Only the Australian government is able to decide wether the Kangaroos should be culled or not. I’ve also talked with a commercial shooter and he was super friendly…. and told me about his work, which kind of light & weapon he uses and how many headshots he lands after more than ten years of experience in this field. Please don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that kangaroo hunting/kangaroo leather in general is a bad thing. For me the current system only doesn’t look sustainable and the number counting system really needs to be updated. p.s.: nice profile pic 🦘

I try hard to watch videos covering this subject with an open mind, and I hope that they contain a shred of validity. I am often disappointed. Sadly, the majority of the organisations pushing to stop Kangaroo culls have no concept of how Kangaroos breed, nor how many of them are living in Australia. Further, they never specify what breeds of kangaroos they are talking about, and often make mistakes by misrepresenting the populations of kangaroos that are harvested. One fact: If Grey and Red kangaroos are not culled, they will overpopulate the land and will eventually starve. WE Western humans created perfect conditions for Kangaroos to continually breed, rather than breed according to the climate, which is the way roos naturally control their population. So, for all you people stating that culling is cruel, it's YOUR fault. YOU as humans created the perfect conditions for Kangaroo plagues. So now WE HUMANS have to cull them so they don't overpopulate. Want to stop Kangaroo culling? Shut down the pastoral and agricultural industries in Australia. Get real. Culling is not nice, but it is absolutely necessary, and if the culling can also generate further income through food or leather, then so be it. It happens with every other domesticated animal in the world. Grey and red Kangaroos are not going to die out. Maybe concentrate on how rare and endangered wallaby and kangaroo habitats are being destroyed by humans to build housing estates. That is the travesty that is happening to Kangaroo species, not culling of overpopulated species.
@jnkb_9978
@jnkb_9978 Жыл бұрын
Okey, so let's say you stop hunting the kangaroos, then they will reproduce rapidly but at one certain point, the population will decrease because of illnesses, lack of food and so on. After a certain period of ups and downs in the population they will establish an equilibrium. Like all other animals in the world do. Maybe Australia should focus on reducing the amount of sheep and give wildlife more space. Not to mention that the way sheep are trated is absolutic barbaric (mulesing etc.).

@@BradGryphonn If we don't have the will to feed every human on the planet, then we do not have the means to feed every human on the planet. And considering the abundance of war and conflict, any such will to feed every human on the planet is nothing more than a pipe dream. All I'm saying is that there is no rationalization for culling kangaroos and not humans that doesn't ultimately come down to selfishly prioritizing our species over theirs. That is perfectly logical, but let's at least be honest about it.

Roos eat grass ,,the settlers cleared heaps of bush land for pasture ,,so most likely there are more of then in Australia now than before white man came,, Before there was a cull in my area there were roads you couldn’t drive fast on ,because they haven’t learned roads are dangerous so they can jump out from the side of the road into oncoming cars .this can be a disaster if you were to swerve at high speed ,,the damage to a car runs into thousands ,,last time I hit a roo my car was written off. This video doesn’t mention the down side of having so many Roos,,but wants to pull on heart strings with comments from city dwelling greenies who really know little of reality. While Aussie farmers grow beef and lamb we miss out and this meat resource,Roos do not damage the ground like hoofed animals ,,but cows and sheep ruin the edges of waterways ,,,
