I played LOTR and a bit of 40k in the 2000's then stopped because univ, job... Recently I watched a few videos of 40k games and I still try to cope with what happened during those 15 last years. I was quite bitter to see the whole hobby section that went from "lets take a bit of polystyrene, cardbord and TP tubes and paint it into an awesome ork base" to "buy this very expensive terrain piece, and while we're at it, we sell boards". So when we began 3D printing minis for roleplay games with my brother, I wanted to print a small army just for painting it and that's how I discovered OPR. I just love how the rules are kept simple, it seems like the goal is to just align armies and have short, interesting battles with a sustained rhythm so that players can just share a moment and have fun. Something that looks completely alien to GW right now. Now we're both into it (I, saurians and he beastmen) and we're successfully convincing our teenage friends to brush the dust of their V3-V4 40k / WH (Oldhammer, now I guess) and give it a try in the OPR rule system. Really great to casually go back into the hobby !

i just printed an entire dwarf army for $10 in STL's and $30 in resin, a full army that would be around 2.5k-3k pts in age of sigmar. the same army bought in GW plastic would have been probably $600+. $40 vs $600. printers literally pay for themselves with your first project if you are printing armies, and every army thereafter is just the cost of a couple pizzas. once you print, you cant go back, its as revolutionary for the miniature industry as the combustion engine was for the travel industry

I'm a huge warhammer40k fan and I've never bought a miniature. I have over 90 of their books at my house but I've never bought a miniature. The reason I never have bought a miniature is because they are too expensive. If they would make these things cheaper I think they would have a person like me who spent money every month on them. If they made them cheaper and less daunting to get into I think they would have loads of new players.

GW’s best move to survive would be to cut their prices by about 50% and them get in stores EVERYWHERE. Walmart, comic book stores, those stores in the mall that still sell dvds. They need to make up for the cut price by selling waaaay more volume. They can’t beat 3D printing but they can still be the number one premade mini company if they’re willing to change

@@fateweaver9844 We won't have to - right now GW is killing themselves. 3D printing is not what is killing them - 3D printing is how folks are handling the failure of GW to address their market. GW can still turn things around, but I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you. As 3D printing Patreons go, OPR is in the big leagues, with 7,500 subscribers. From GW's stance, that is a drop in the bucket. BUT - GW had already lost me as a customer. They have lost a lot of customers, most more recently than my own ten year old departure. OPR has us printing and painting multiple armies in multiple games. I remember when I used to do the same with GW - back in the nineties when they started doing regiment boxes at reasonable prices. 3D printing won't replace GW - but that does not mean that GW will survive if they hold the course that they have set. Overpriced models and poorly playtested and balanced games, with a high entry cost. I haven't played a GW game, aside from Mordheim, in years - but I have played four OPR games over the course of just this past weekend. Better games, better balance, and better price. And even for Mordheim, our warbands are 3D printed - not copies of GW minis, but models from other companies.

What I love about the onepagerules models is the way they are delivered in the files. You can get the supported and unsupported, that's nothing new. I haven't been the only one, but I've been saying that Games Workshop is facing a paradigm shift. That said, even WITH a 3D printer, I would still likely opt for plastic minis if the price was right. Sometimes it's just more convenient. The biggest fear I have with 3D printing is they start introducing a DRM system once bigger companies start engaging with the space. E.G. - only being able to use an STL a few times before you can no longer print it. But when you get to the point like we are with Ash Wastes, where the cost of a single box is flirting with that of a 3D printer, they're pushing the limits that a large portion of their customers will tolerate. Also, for what it's worth, I love your Twitter. I appreciate that you engage with speculation without condemning without proper sources. You do wonderful work and it's greatly appreciated and valuable to our community
@Erikjust
@Erikjust 2 жыл бұрын
If they try that´s ASKING for piracy. i mean take a look at what happened both with music,tv and games when they started to slap DRM on their products... The legal customers where punished while the pirates they wished to hit, at best they where delayed a month, most of the time however it was just a few days and then the DRM was.. BROKEN and they could play their games they had downloaded illegally. The company didn´t see a dime. I think the same thing will happen here. Piracy is not something you can prevent heck even stores have a small amount set aside for the occasional shoplifter that gets away. HOWEVER, you can reduce it easily by actually fostering loyalty.

@@MrBizteck Well the always online DRM Ubisoft came out with originally took about 30 days or so to break. Who knows maybe future STL DRM might come up with something unique, making it especially hard to break (the first time around at the very least) But i am willing to bet you almost anything that it takes ALOT longer than 30 days to develop a new DRM. In the meantime all you do is hazel your legal costumers, while the very pirates you where trying to prevent just sits back and points and laugh at your DRM.

A DRM for 3D files limiting the number of print attempts would be in direct opposition to the main idea behind 3D printing - being able to create a physical object anytime and in any number you want. Other big problem is how to deal with failed prints then. As people are already used to unlimited freedom with 3D printing my guess is that introducing DRM would meet lots of opposition.

I still buy regular models from time to time If I really like those models but resin 3d printing opens up a whole new world of models. What's illicit? Firstly I'm not using GW knockoffs, lizardmen predate GW and they don't own the imagry any more than McDonald's owns the idea of a hamburger, secondly I'm not creating proxies for Games Workshop because I'm not playing GW games.. you win GW now you get even less money from me, working as intended I guess. Similarity of product doesn't necessarily create confusion of IP infringement or brand confusion, there is a ton of legal precedent for this. GW and it's fan tools can go kick rocks
@markwatson8714
@markwatson8714 2 жыл бұрын
@@DeusMachina71 One of the reasons they changed everything's name for AoS was because 'elves', 'dwarves', 'lizardmen' and the like are so generic it's impossible to enforce any kind of IP ownership unless it's a blatant copy of the sculpt (not to mention I'd love to hear GW's defence if you simply admitted you did copy ... from Tolkien). It's the fanbase more than anything else that's the issue. Back in the day GW actually suggested using non-citadel miniatures (they even reviewed them in WD), and players sought out the rare, weird and wonderful to give their armies a little bit of character. Since GW started pushing the 'only citadel miniatures at official events' line though there's a significant chunk of the fanbase that have fell for it hook, line and sinker, to the point they'll refuse to play against someone even at non-GW affiliated locales because they have a non-citadel model in their army. Despite the fact said model is often a better representation in terms of WYSIWYG than the 'official' model.
@Remixersoloman
@Remixersoloman 2 жыл бұрын
@@DeusMachina71 Making a lizardman is one thing, making one that directly copies GW characters or designs is a different story. Obviously there are plenty of genuine proxy models out there that put their own spin on things, but those aren't what the "illicit" crowd are talking about. I love printing, just think we should accurately represent arguments.

@@jacksonferretti3159 If you are just staring out, go with the pre-supported files from OPR and your stock settings on whichever printer you get. It took me some minor tweaks to get my Phonton Mono dialed in to get consistent prints with the Eco Resin. The 3D printing community is pretty good about providing support in terms of how to videos and so on. I highly recommend using the Lychee slicer program to prepare your files for printing. It's very user friendly and I'm seeing good results with it. I'm on the free version and it still kicks ass. It's really a game changer to bust out exactly the army you want by printing it at home. You can set up slicer programs to tell you how much a print costs. You plug in the cost of the resin and the program calculates the volume used. When you see a 5 model squad come in at under a buck, something clicks. Also, while it looks like a hassle, the prep work is less of a pain in the ass than cutting stuff off a sprue, getting rid of mould lines, assembling and then filling in gaps with green stuff.

So good are they (and so poor are GW's) that they are the reason I discovered OPR in the first place over a year ago. Having been around games workshop for far longer than I care to admit I have a slightly different perspective than many might think. I've known employees of Games Workshop in the US and UK. They fired vast numbers of employees and closed stores arbitrarily. They screwed over dozens of experienced employees and managers because they were becoming too expensive (yeah you read that right) they would rather hire a bunch of inexperienced non players than keep the employees that often spend more than a 1/3 of their pay on Games Workshop merchandise and actually know what they're doing/talking about. Added to their numerous times they changed codex demanding everyone buy the newest version (often making players favorite models no longer permitted) forcing the players to essentially shelf hundreds of dollars of their hard earned money, all because they can't properly run their company without screwing everyone over.

$55.47 for a box of two Eldar Warlock figures, that's INSANE! Wizkids has this miniature line called D&D Frameworks, most characters are just under $15! Or you could save up the money that would normally go towards a Forge World resin Titan model, buy a 3D printer and for a few cents print up your own warriors and stuff; a real good deal! GW is going to get left behind!

Been out of GW pay-to-win ecosystem since 2020 totally. And I was a HUGE fanboy, but the rules garbling, the price-hikes and the churning out of expensive books every single month turned me totally off. Discovered OnePageRules back then and been happily playing their rules with my armies since then. Jumped the gun for their patreon in january and have printed every week 20-30 models (so about 450 models since then - 3 complete fantasy armies. Total cost for the files including purchases with the discounts of the backcatalogue: About 150 €. I went through 5 bottles of resin @ 40 € each, so 200 €. My printer cost me another 250 €, and I spent 150 € in accessories. So in total I spent 750 € in 4 months. Less than 2 € per model. But the price per model is going to go down, because the printer and the accessories are paid for already. The more I print, the less my models cost. For 3 freaking armies! Incidentally, I have played more games in that time-period than during the last 4 years. Bye GW. Only downside. My army of grey is growing again. But at least not as expensive, as it was before.

Nevermind OPRs free and BALANCED rules for playing games with their minis. OPR really captures the extremely large market of people looking for an affordable wargaming experience. It literally has the same start up cost as making paper minis! Games workshop lives in fantasy land that they do not have competition and their prices reflect that. So many companies have proven that wrong in the last few years. Either GW will change or they will lose out and become obscure if not dead as a company.

I imagine if GW broke into the 3D printing scene it would be with a proprietary printer that only prints pre supported .GW files that you can only buy directly through GW's webstore. I'd guess they would find a way to make the files only able to be printed so many times(where their proprietary hardware comes in) with heavy DRM and antitampering software.
@brianp6859
@brianp6859 2 жыл бұрын
Then one person buys them, prints them off, runs them through 3d modeling software that uses pictures take with your phone of the model you just printed to create a 3d file you can export to STL and release it on the internet for free, boom pirate city. No GW will shoot themselves in the foot if they try to hard to lock down their customers. OPR is growing crazy because they offer great value and actually respect their customers/patrons. GW will likely have to adopt those practices once the money coming in starts drying up. This is how competition helps the customer in capitalist system.

I think plastic minis will still have a place in the new paradigm. New hobbyists need a source of minis that don't require an investment in hardware or the skills to use it. If they're just starting out, they may not know if they like this whole "assembling and painting minis" deal. So being able to pick up a plastic kit and paint themselves a warband for a skirmish game is pretty valuable. That doesn't mean Games Workshop is off the hook. Their plastics are way too expensive to fill that niche, at least for most hobbyists. When they're selling 5 or 10 man squads for the price other companies are charging for whole regiments (24-40, possibly multiple boxes thereof), it's just a bad deal for customers. GW exist, right now, in that space where their products are too expensive for new hobbyists looking to break into miniatures, and too expensive to justify experienced hobbyists not just buying a 3D printer and STLs. They don't cater well to either demographic. Nor are they doing what's necessary to change their business model to accommodate new customers. They're focused solely on milking their existing fans for all they're worth. This arrangement will only hurt them in the long run, as that latter group can only shrink.
@markwatson8714
@markwatson8714 2 жыл бұрын
I suspect plastics will always have a place, just like there's still companies out there doing metal castings, and people who prefer working with metal models. It's not just a question of price - if you look at the Siocast stuff for example it still has a slight edge in terms of detail, and it's significantly tougher than resin or traditional plastics to boot. Fairly sure there'd be a ready market (parents of younger children for example) of people willing to spend that little bit extra if it meant they got a model you could reverse a car over without damaging anything more than the paint.

As i have said before, the company was doing really good during the "New GW" era - but then somewhere behind closed doors some fat cat assassins took them out and replaced them with some of the old snakes from the old days and started driving everything into the ground again. Why? Good question, last time GW behaved this way they almost went bankrupt and that was BEFORE 3D printing and hot competition lol.

I've been trying to figure out what kind of 3D printer I want, I feel like I want a Plastic Printer, at least to start with, since I think I'd want to primarily print terrain, but I don't know, a resin printer would be very nice, the big drawback is the much smaller printing surface and toxic fumes. Can I get a sufficiently good enough plastic print quality to justify it for minis? Or is it not as much of a bother as I think it is to print large pieces of terrain with a resin printer?
@ciaphascain2807
@ciaphascain2807 2 жыл бұрын
They serve different purposes. FDM printers are fantastic for large things. It takes some improvement and a lot of practice to be able to print something small. Resin is perfect for small. I have an Ender 3 pro v2 that is great for printing terrain. I have a small Epax x1 that I use for minis and small elements for terrain. Terrain with Resin would look a whole lot better, but you would have to have a rather large one to do terrain. Not really economically feasible right now. It depends on what you want more. If you want to do terrain more, go FDM. If you want to go minis more, go resin.
@chris-ri1zu
@chris-ri1zu 2 жыл бұрын
All depends what you want to pay there are some big resin printers out there now. i personally would not use a FDM printer for minis i just couldnt live with the layer lines and the low detail. I have both and from my experience resin printing is far far easier then using a Fdm. The toxic fumes are nowhere near as bad as what you think in regards to making a room smell. just print near a open window leave the room and close the door you wont even know. But for terrain and large terrain a Fdm printer cant be beat. Bottom line is which ever one you pick you wont regret it 3D printing is a amazing hobby which will challenge you at times but is so rewarding when you finish a project. Good luck.

Filament printers are great for making mechanical parts, and you have your choice of materials, but the detail of a sculpt slows it right down and they can be very frustrating if they keep failing prints. They're best for buildings and tanks (thought put into print orientation, a high build primer and sanding can limit layer lines). Resin printers are great for detail, but limited build volume, fumes and messy clean-up are a factor. The best of all worlds is both, with the filament printer doing simple, bulky shapes, and the resin doing details as greebles/kibble. I tried both and will again, but would favour resin for miniatures. I have some ideas that leverage the pliable properties of thermoplastic that would make filament printers still useful e.g. print foliage as thin, flat objects, soften with a hairdryer to unflatten them, and glue them to trees.

Well, I have to agree, 3D printed miniatures are the way forward. Something I never thought I would say. Although there are some very nice and cheap injection moulding machines hitting the market. I have completely thrown in the towel with GW's larger games systems, well all, except Blood Bowl as we still have such a laugh when playing. I ordered some 3D miniatures the other week and I'm amazed at the quality, one I thought would make a great larger scale display piece, a quick message to the printer gal and boom, one large scale miniature. Awesome. The miniatures ordered is for a group rebirth of an ancient gaming system called Tunnels & Trolls, yes you guessed it, the British version of AD&D...niiiiiice! The 3D range is breath taking, so much so we've started ordering Blood Bowl scenery ( 3D printed ) to start replacing the GW stuff and I've ordered a new Ork team. I'm now looking a printer for myself so I can just buy the files. Viva La revolution!
