In the beginning, Genshin’s women sucked. But now, with the advent of Sumeru and Fontaine, they’ve been getting a lot better. Here’s what I learned from Genshin about writing women. As always, comment your thoughts so we can discuss. Sub for more videos like this!
This is part of my remake series-thing, I have four older videos that are terrible in terms of audio and visual quality, so I’m remaking them. This is the first one, let me know what you think!

You showed Ganyu a lot in this video, and it reminded me of another comparison I've heard on the net: the difference between Ganyu and Yan Fei is a first-generation immigrant and a second-generation immigrant. While both are half-adepti, Ganyu was raised by a bird in the mountains, while Yan Fei was probably raised in the city. Which is why they are so different.

Jean is a lot more appreciated if you're playing from the start. The feeling of making you feel like you're home and all while dealing with the Gunhildr stuff and Varka and Vanessa's position. The manga and everything just adds to her character. The literal only shared trait among her and Ganyu is that they are overworked. The shade thrown at her is crazy
@eddieboston6540
@eddieboston6540 28 күн бұрын
Yea jean is a hardworking woman with self esteem and confidence problems because she doesn't think she as good as her idols Vanessa and varka so over does it. Ganyu is a hardworking half breed with identity problems due to her being a half breed and when two women were sent to help her she thought she was being replaced by them thinking she was no longer needed. There's lots more to both and your right just watering them down to overworked is a shame.
@yuri-sama.questionmark
@yuri-sama.questionmark 27 күн бұрын
I will also add that behind Jean's knight persona for her duty, she is a hopeless romantic in her heart, and reads romance novels to experience what she wasn't able to experience because of her duties as a knight. (It's kind of parallel to Eula ngl) On the other hand, she's very idealistic because of how she looks up to her idols, though she sees that too much idealism is harmful in Noelle, whom she doesn't want to end up like in the future.
@DreamyAileen
@DreamyAileen 13 күн бұрын
Also Jean and Ganyu are "overworked" for different reasons. Jean is overworked because the Knights of Favonius are short-staffed, i.e. she has no choice. Ganyu is "overworked" because work is the only way she knows to interact with people so she buries herself in it, i.e. she does it by choice. I actually think calling Ganyu "overworked" is a mischaracterization on the fandom's part. "Overworked" describes someone who can't handle their workload, and Ganyu very much can handle hers. She's not overworked, she's a workaholic. Different problem.

I don't think including gender in a character is necessarily a bad thing. Think of like gender identity. A big part of who i am is the fact that I'm genderfluid(between enby and female). It's not the biggest deal in the world, but if I see a character wrote the way I am, I'd like them to be written in a way I can connect with them, not just as a genderfluid person in name only. There are certainly bad things about gender stereotypes, but they do influence society and having even some of these qualities in women while writing them can be beneficial to helping your women audience in connecting with them(the reverse is also true for men). Hope that makes sense!

This was a pretty good video. While poorly written "strong female characters" or "strong independent women" are found everywhere, it's no secret that it's primarily a problem in western media. I often show examples of female characters in anime and manga to many of my western friends, without referencing the declining state of writing in western works. When I do this they often point out how much better it is. It's not like all western writers are write female characters poorly, it's just interesting that the majority seem to do so. I absolutely love Dehya, the way that she looks out for others in the Sumeru Archon Quest and trusts them to fulfil their roles is such a strong highlight of someone who could become a great leader yet chooses to remain on the path she's passionate about. And her design is amazing.

@@Titanic_Tuna I think the problem is similarly present in eastern media too tbh, just in a different way. For the west, it’s over masculinizing women and calling them strong women, in the east, it’s oversexualizing them. While genshin does sexualize their women(mainly just in all of them having legs showing) it’s not near as bad as most games. And even then, we get chars like Arle who completely ignore that, which is great to see.

Having him become the Iudex some frickin 400 years prior to the incident of the prophecy to have him grow closer to humans, and thus greatly increase the probability that he would not nope out of it and actually help her and Fontaine, was a very, _very_ smart decision.

Great video! I agree with a lot of the points you make, however I think its a little baffling how you didn't mention Arlecchino in any way shape or form. She is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting female characters we've gotten so far. She is, both visually and from a story perspective, the most masculine woman we've gotten until now, incredibly strong and immensly threatening, while also rejecting the typical feminine term 'mother' (bc of lore reasons but still) and chosing to go by father instead. Generally speaking, she hides or supresses her feminine traits, like showing no emotions or disguising vulnerability and care. But we also learn during the Archon quest that she is incredibly cunning any manipulative, and is not above using more 'feminine' traits to get what she wants (feigning concern over Fontaine and the House of the Hearth for her involvement in the Archon Quest when it was for Fatui business reasons all along). We also learn via the HoH children and her Story Quest that she does care and want the best for the orphan kids, she just doesn't outwardly show it to not seem 'weak'. To me she is a really interesting character to analyse, from both a 'writing woman' and 'writing queerness in media' perspective.

"Lots of people have pointed out that Jean and Ganyu especially are pretty much the same character" Sure, they might seem that way if you're as socially inept as the average Genshin player. They're barely anything alike. Jean is overworked because the Knights of Favonius are short-staffed, with most of the more capable Knights away on Varka's expedition, so she doesn't really have a choice in the matter. There's an argument to be made that she should delegate more responsibilities to her subordinates, but she's unwilling to do so due to not wanting to put her subordinates through the same hell she herself is going through. In doing so ironically making her own hell even worse. Ganyu is "overworked" because work is the only way she knows to interact with people so she buries herself in it, meaning she absolutely has a choice in the matter and from what I can tell isn't even really overworked. Ganyu doesn't delegate responsibilities to others not because she's unwilling to (in her Story Quest she has no qualms with leaving her work to her coworkers while she goes on break), but because she doesn't need to in the first place. Because she really _can_ handle it all by herself. For Ganyu, her work isn't hell, it's just a part of her life.

Overall a good video, but I think there are several details you get wrong in terms of what's masculine or feminine. The best part of the video is that it's the balance of traits that makes for good characters. Being protective is not a feminine trait. It's an highly regarded trait for both men and women and relatively universal, but it's closer to the core of masculinity, so it leans in that direction. It's the main reason men go to war (private men, not governments and rulers). Sure, women are the protectors of their children, but men are the protectors of their families and others, which means both their partner and children. In that aspect, Furina's wish to protect Fontaine is much more masculine, since one of the primary tools she uses is stoicism, which is a masculine trait. She hides her true emotions, like most men are taught to do. I think you misrepresent trust as a feminine trait. Women are generally more agreeable, and men more disagreeable. Where people trust them more are in different areas. However, trust in themselves is confidence, which is a masculine trait, as men are more confident (and overconfident). These are scientifically measured traits (studies have been made), but on the whole they're also marginal, and the difference between individuals is greater than the difference between genders. If you think vengeance is masculine you've not heard the phrase, "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned." (That's not the original line, but the one most known.) However, you're right in that the way Eula expresses it is more masculine. It's more physical and threatening, rather than mental and undermining. Sigewinne I find more to be non-human than either masculine or feminine. She has a bit of an almost psychopathic vibe, as Melusines don't quite understand humans the same way we do. In the end, women are not harder to write than men. Writing good characters, regardless of gender, is hard. They're just different, and there are different aspects of their characters the audience tends to have more forgiveness to if it's not written well. This is not on you, but I disagree that Ganyu and Jean are the same character. They share a major character trait, but that's it. They deal with it in different ways, and they have different opinions about it. For instance Jean suffers from overwork, while Ganyu enjoys it (which she shares more with Noelle than with Jean).

I agree with most of this, and this may just be me, but i personally feel like "men with boobs" is a weird way of describing certain characters. As if women can't be just as unnecessarily violent as male characters are, it truly feels like theres a subconscious interpretation of whatever's considered feminine and masculine for that half century as the undeniable truth. The phrase "write women as if they're men" on the surface is silly and stupid, but as long as you're a capable writer i dont think it's all that bad. That is, if your male characters aren't shallow examples of "masculinity" with no personality beyond stoicism or anger or arrogance. In general i think the social interpretation of these personality traits as "masculine" or "feminine" is part of the problem, leading people to thinking that arrogant women are differently arrogant than men because they're women, and not because of personality differences. Same with the unconscious thinking of "women are passive aggressive, indirect," while men are "confrontational, incredibly direct". Not claiming that you've said this, just something i noticed. Really, while there's tons of ways not to write a woman (and others by extent), there's no specific right way. Because even in the realm of fictional characters, 2D or 3D, written or seen, purely voice acted or physically portrayed through an actor, there's endless different personalities people can have, and a gender never inherently leads them one way or another. It's nature vs nurture, in which we only see women as soft and gentle and motherly because that's the way they are taught to act, what they're taught to desire. Same of course goes for men who are taught not to express emotions, to "be a man" and push through it all. And in media it's far more realistic and meaningful to create these characters as characters, to deconstruct what you see as fem/masc and why, and to stick traits that are relevant to that character's vague identity. I dont think there should always be a traditionally/stereotypically feminine woman in something (in terms of clothing and material aspects like make up), and theres no real need for a traditionally masculine man the same way. Again, not that these things are bad as said in the video, but the idea that just because it's expected and considered common/natural doesn't mean it's necessary. And by extension, I also think we all should start to realize that protecting and fighting, for example, aren't examples of masculinity. Like how dressing up or baking isn't feminine. Again im not saying that's what was said in the video, but i truly do know that separating the ever-changing concepts of fem and masc from personality can only help, both with writing characters and in real life. Because those kinds of "fem/masc traits" even change across culture, not just time. I dont have a clear cut, always right solution to this. after all I've been in a writing slump for years now, but maybe a character being feminine or masculine or androgynous should come last. A personality should just be a personality, unrelated to their gender unless it's important to the story. Of course a girl can be a baker, or loving, or manipulative by indirect means, but none of those traits/skills should be attributed to being a girl. All that really does is limit a character, where someone liking baking is just an innate part of them and not a skill/hobby they picked up, or how someone is just loving purely through gender and not because they want to be/were put through horrible situations. I hope any bit of this was clear lol, probably oddly passionate because you saying Eula and Navia were masculine in some aspects. Interesting, and the most obvious example of those concepts varying from person to person. I can see it in Dehya and Arlecchino and Clorinde a bit, but hearing those two by means of kicking ass is both odd and intriguing
@Vesperad0
@Vesperad0 20 күн бұрын
Men with boobs...the more I think about it, the more it becomes incredibly obvious there's a huge problem with the way men are written. And because these universally agreed upon traits and behaviors are seen as standard or expected in most male characters, when seen through women, only then does it become obvious how flawed those traits are. Like with that old trend of drawing Hawkeye into the poses of female characters for comic books, which showed just how egregious and stupid 10/10 women were drawn. Back breaking, butt and boob shots, literally anything that could be a suggestive prop like...squirting a bottle of mayo, for some reason? While Mary Sues can definitely be a problem, I think people need to first learn the difference between an actual Mary Sue and a woman who happens to be both mentally and physically strong. I haven't watched anything Star Wars related or anything with Captain Marvel, so I can't talk about their characters, but I have definitely seen a troubling trend of calling just about any character that's physically strong a Mary Sue...that is, if they're a woman. The difference between a good female character and a Mary Sue, is through the flaws-a female character can be as built as a freight train or as threateningly intelligent as possible, but if she has flaws and conflict not just happening around her but within/by her own hand, then that's not a Mary Sue. Because a Mary Sue is more than just being loved by everyone, she's never caught off guard, always at ease/happy, or maybe she's perfectly stoic, depending on the writer's preference she's either physically strong or super smart or mentally resilient, she has a family that centers around her and a friend group circling her and the universe cries when something doesn't go her way, but just one of these aspects doesn't instantly equal a Mary Sue. I've strayed far off the path of genshin, but it's still worth mentioning. Idk if anybody is seriously calling any character in genshin a Mary Sue rather than plain/lackluster/anime fanboy bait, but I'd rather hope not. Things would be much better if people actually learned what certain things mean, and didn't just throw around words as actual criticism.
