It's not just the hair, the make up is different now. They didn't look like that when they were young, people used to look older.

LOL same, I watched them when I was younger. when I was younger though, my favorite characters were Rose and Sophia but as I got older (still watch it every night by the way, and I don't care if I know every episode word for word) my favorite characters switched to Dorothy and Blanche, although I love all of them.

But, they looked much older that their characters were supposed to be. In the beginning, Dorothy was mid 50s, Rose early 50s and Blanche late 40s/50. Sophia was pretty accurate at mid 70s. I'm 44 and I can't imagine looking that old in a few years. Even back then, I always wondered why they made them look so old. Both my grandmother's were in their early and mid 50s and they didn't look like that.

Heavy smoking and drinking wasn't socially stigmatized like it is now both of which ages folks quite q lot, the use of sunscreen was still sporadic and what so many of the boomer and younger generations have forgotten, common childhood diseases, like scarlet fever or measles can cause permanent damage to one's organs thus shortening one's life expectancy, sometimes by decades. Finally, medicine and plastic surgery has improved greatly, at least of those who can afford the best versions of it, which is why celebrities don't age the same as normal people do.

Dorothys whole vibe in the episode where she has chronic fatigue and confronts the doctor at the end is pure iconic fashion street style for her age, I don't mean streetwear but style that would be interesting, trendy and a fashion photographer would capture it as she walks by. The earrings, cream and gold outfit and classy swagger would have her up there with these ladies and killing the game on social reposts. Her hairstyle would just need to be more modern, less tired-looking of the 80s and compliment her features better. This post gave them hair from the late 80s/ 90s for sure and changed the features slightly. I think when they said 'new' they meant different. Not modern.
