Coming to the end of the season I can say that Martinez's 1st season in fhe PL has been successful. He is one of the main reasons why De gea won the golden glove

His rating is massively misreading, the stats are blatantly contradictory, how can you be so small yet do well in aerial duels and then have a mere B in reading off the game, that is one of his best attributes.

OK, Fair play. After a full season of watching Martinez in the Prem, everything you said in this video came to be true (apart from your concerns over his aerial ability). I think your concerns were justified but his positional sense is so good, it negated the issue this season - which you weren't to know until it was seen. It is evident that a very impressive amount of research has gone into these videos. Cheers lad.

I think the accurate pings is why Ten Hag wanted him, Same with Ericksen and a guy like Antony who can also cross accurately ,Ronaldo would have a field day with those accurate balls,sneaks past defenders to beat the offside trap,one touch volleys,Goal! I think Martinez comes as a CDM,alongside de Jong Maybe ETH plays with with a back 3 and an inverted winger in Malacia, All this is hypothetical since as it stands Ronaldo wants to leave,de Jong wants to stay,Antony is Overpriced and Erickson is still thinking...what a transfer market for United...

Leave Ronaldo out of this discussion. We are not playing for him, we are supposed to be a team. We need all our forwards to create and score, not everyone crossing the ball to Ronaldo. We need to stop this madness!

@@manchesterisred4234 A team needs a center Forward... Rashford,Martial,Sancho,Elanga,Pillistri and Garnacho simply are not enough or even adequate.. Cavani&Greenwood are out.. Can they play all 90+minutes,All games,all competitions..?and produce consistently..? This is just pre-season,The real grind will start, Imagine needing a vital goal to get a point on a bad day or a goal to get all 3points..who do you want at the end of an accurate ping..? Ronaldo the Goal machine of all time as of now is still a Man United player... We have gotten accurate passers of the ball in Erickson and Martinez to create more scoring chances...this was very limited last season... We are not Mancity or Liverpool who's squads are high scoring,everybody scores etc They even have the audacity to release Mane,Sterling,G.Jesus, who would find a spot very easily in Man Uniteds First Eleven.. What your saying is idealistic,but reality might hit sonner if we don't find a solution... A team plays for one onother Yes but the end game is goals and therefore needs consistent goal scorers or it will struggle, The center forward is the tip of the spear in any team...If Ronaldo-the greatest goal scorer of all time leaves we have none...That is his role,to score and create chances.. A team plays for one onother but every individual has a role, Defenders,Midfielders,Forwards, For example you defend as a team but there are defenders whose role is defending, Soo not "All" crosses are going to Ronaldo-hypothetically if he doesn't leave-But it will be very smart to direct them to him because he scores and scores Prolifically if you do so..

I don’t think lack of size is an issue here, Cannavaro was actually a very small (relatively speaking) Centre Back at only 5’9.

It’s how you carry your size. The balance you have and the low centre of gravity. He doesn’t hold his ground as well as Passarella, Baresi or Cannavarro.

i think he is the perfect cb for united, when you can pair him up with varane, who is better in the air due to his heigt and frenkie de jong iong in that 6 spot its way better then maguire and varane because of the mindset of maguire, what a lot of people dont see is that martinez really has that killer/winner mindset wich i think is good for united

If we don't sign a CDM, we can play Martinez or Lindelöf as the CDM because they have a great pass, can ping and switch the play in a moment. And with the coaching drills that United is going through, we can make a player play a certain style. Lindelöf does play CDM for Sweden certain times.

I was getting gassed thinking we finally bought a CDM but I always got this guy mixed up with Alvarez lol. Oh well at least his distribution will be better than Maguire and probably Varane’s too. Although a partnership like Lindelof-Martinez would be great on the ball, it could be eaten alive on set-pieces / aerial balls.

Very few defenders have a better distribution than Maguire. He’s weakness is his lack of athleticism nothing else. Man had a bad season last season because his confidence was crushed and his decision making went to shit which just accentuated his lack of athleticism.

Stepping up into midfield can't happen until you're controlling games and your forwards are scoring goals, thereby relieving pressure to stay back, and United lack a stable enough midfield and lack goalscorers lol. This isn't going to be seen for a while.

What do you think of him as a cdm. He can be used in the build-up, his passing is decent and make crucial interceptions or tackles.

@@PythagorasinBoots he’s been playing cdm in his early years at Ajax. He can definitely play cdm, but its not where he’s at his best. Taking the lighter midfielder “De Jong” type role, I think you would like to see someone who is more used to play with opponents all around. He may develop those skills further ofc, to play in a sort of Kante role maybe… but I wouldnt put him there in a high pressure situation right now.

Jesus some of our fans are mushrooms, we didn't by him as a cdm, we didn't buy him to play the cdm role, he will not be playing cdm at any point in his united career, he's a CENTER BACK and that's exactly what he's going to be a cb, that's what we're buying him for and he will be starting as one of our main cb, simple

Martinez comes in to operate in the Carrick Role , protects the CBs and will drop deep to allow the CBs to split to build up pattern of play or hold his position in midfield..

You wouldn’t spend that much as cover for Tierney. He will come in to start - question is where? LB would be a mistake, he isn’t someone who will run a flank on his own and he hasn’t got the express pace to burn up and down that side. He isn’t a big crosser either - more of a long passer and playmaker. More likely to be a CB/CDM hybrid.

lissandro as of now is better bcuz hes physically stronger and arially more dominant than timber while both are elite dribblers,lissandro has an outstanding passing ability as well,while defensively i feel both r equally good,teiber still has the edge over potential as hes only 20 years old

It would be interesting to see where does Lisandro rank across Europe as Sven Botman (also a proponent of Haag-Ball) , Koulibaly, Ake, Kimpembe,Lenglet are some of the center-backs signed this summer. On top of that, you have Van Dijk Konaté Matip Laporte Thiago Silva Stones Ruben Diaz and Christian Romero in the league .

i disagree. Alaba was so pacey and could handle the flank on his own. Then he had CB and CM elements which allowed him to be a complete package. Martinez is nowhere near as athletic as him out wide and wouldn't be able to overlap very well or defend 1 v 1 wide situations all game.

Not really. He played as a LW in Argentina. Sometimes as a LCB in back 4 or 3. He was not a CDM, until they tried him there are Ajax.

Thank you, timely. I suspect Arsenal's plan is to principally play Lisandro as a playmaking inverted left back in a 433, with the left-sided 8 playing high. He will compete with Tierney and provide depth at LCB and CDM. He'd get be a good fit, question as you say above is whether Arsenal can pay his value for a player not a guaranteed starter. He would be a good FDJ partner for Man Utd as you say, so as an Arsenal fan I fear we'll lost out again.

Personally I think it’s not a great use of him and it would leave Arsenal vulnerable down that left. Zinchenko would be a better bet for that plan.

I think you’re right. Arsenal play PnP football and rather than focusing on positions we look at players by spaces they occupy. Arsenal are obviously having a system change so I suspect he would float in the space that Xhaka does with the #6 taking on more defensive responsibilities. The key is getting balance in the squad and making use of L.Martinez’s attacking/on ball play as he’s too good not to do so. I suspect ETH and Arteta have VERY similar ideas about him. Both want to have the ball 60+% of the time so if you look at player’a positioning on ball possessions Arsenal adopt a 3-1-4-2 with the LB in that midfield 4 and the LW tucking in next to the ST which is why ESR got so many goals centrally. He would be key in build up play so I think arsenal makes more sense for him
