Never before are there so many ultra fast lenses at prices you and I can actually afford. This is crazy. I remember just a few years ago drooling over vintage f1.2 glass, and now we have lenses like this TTArtisan 35mm f0.95 lens for $200. And it's good. Very good.
With many good mirrorless camera options on the market today adapting ultra fast vintage lenses became a big hobby. This drove the price of vintage lenses up a bit from their low point, making lenses faster than f1.2 even less accessible. But now with brands like TTArtisan you can have that same experience at a far lower cost. I'm all for that.

Super sharpness at all apertures is a very modern ideal for how lenses should work. Once upon a long ago, the ideal was a crazy 3d pop rendering that was craved. We can say, joking, that in time Portrait photographers have reduced in number and of importance and instead the Architectural and Clinical ones have doubled or tripled in number and importance.

This is a wise comment :) I have thought about this a lot this year as I've experimented even with vintage "soft" lenses designed to add softness. We've gotten a bit too obsessed with specific features and less focused on the overall of what makes a great image. And by we I mean myself :)

Super fast lenses to me would seem to be more useful for dark situations. I am a creature of the night, so pretty much everything I have is f/1.4 which is usually fast enough for most reasonable night time scenes. I like videography more than photography so I don't slow my shutter past 1/50 in that case, another reason to want fast glass for low light.

I got this lens to pair with a X-Pro2, which I have been keeping on since. The point is exactly to use it for the manual experience in the dark. It also looks amazing with that straight barrel look.

Great video. The current mania for shallow DOF has gone way too far. I shoot portrait shots at family gatherings, and landscape photos around where I live. I have found that the best FL for portraits is around f 2.5-2.8. Anything faster and your subject's face is not entirely in focus. Same is true for closeups of flowers etc. Really for what I do an f2.0 lens is perfectly adequate. Of course, low light situations are different and faster lenses are a benefit. BTW, I have the TTArtisan 50mm f1.4 FE Sony lens which is quite a nice lens. I got that one free from Arthur R, (formerly Technology Mafia), when I was the lucky winner of a giveaway he did after reviewing that lens. The build quality is excellent and it is quite sharp.

It should be pretty straight forward with the m50 because it has focus peaking. Look up how to enable it and use it with manual focus lenses on your m50. This is a great lens for that!

I think its easy to make small ultra fast lenses, but the downside is less on optical performance.

Nice piece…truth, we are spoiled for choice…I love my Pentax SMC 50 f1.2 on my Pentax KP…Even more so since I now select 45mm as the lens focal length which gives me a higher hit rate of pictures, sharply in focus. Happy holidays and cheers from Victoria, BC.

That's interesting - I also have the KP and some fast manual lenses - why does inputting the incorrect focal length increase your hit rate?

@@brucecggallagher1949 I think the only effect of the entered focal length is the ibis compensation, which is probably turned down a bit by entering a lower focal length. At 1.2 anything can affect focus, so maybe 45mm is closer to the actual focal length of the lens and ibis was overcompensating.

The thing is with large aperture lenses, is that it feels like a lot of people buy them for the sake of having them. They're actually of such limited use that the fully open aperture barely gets used.

I have a TTArtisan 35mm f/1.4. It is cheap and fast enough. It is an EF-M mount for my M6 mark II.

You know, I'm quite enamored in general with the new crop of Chinese manual focus lenses that's come along. With mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras becoming the norm, it's become increasingly difficult to find worthwhile vintage lenses. It's obvious that TTArtisan, 7Artisan, Laowa, etc. recognize this as an opportunity as well. It seems that the lower-end offerings are using old optical formulas but newly manufactured, with okay coatings and to modern tolerances. So we get well-made that have charm (really optical deficiencies) of the old stuff but without the nostalgia premium. No worries about fungus, leaky iris mechanisms and lens elements that's been knocked around for half a century. The flip side is also true. TTArtisan's 50mm f0.95 in Leica M mount is optically _very_ sophisticated; it's a $800 credible alternative to a $12k Noctilux. Similarly one of my favorite lenses is the Laowa 7.5mm f2 for MFT. Sharp, contrasty, low-distortion, technically excellent superwide that would be 5x more had it just been labeled a more prestigious brand.

Just picked up the Laowa 17mm f/1.8 in mft mount, it’s fantastic optically and in terms build of build quality. Used to own the Mitakon 25mm f/0.95, another gem. Speaking of the price of the Noctilix-M, the new Nikkor Z 58mm f/0.95 Noct is $7999, four pounds and comes in a suitcase, as it should for that price. ;)

@@marike1100 Yes, I have the Laowa 17mm f1.8 as well. Bought that one on impulse. It's good, optically and mechanically. I don't use it much, however, simply because the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 is on the camera most of the time. The Panasonic 20mm gets lots of hate for its acoustically noisy and somewhat slow autofocus mechanism. Well, it's AF versus - none. It is quite good optically to boot. Pick one up and on the cheap. It's an underappreciated little gem.

Hello, I had a Mitakon 35mm 0,95 before, with my Fuji X-H1 and I sold it. Sadly, I miss it a lot and now I think about buying the 7Artisans 35mm 0,95 - much cheaper. I believe that the 7Artisans is the same or even better than the Mitakon. Some people say that the 7Arts has more accurate colors, but nothing very noticeable. The 7Artisans sells for 199 euros in France. I can say by experience that the one I had is enoughtly sharp wide open, more than decent I would say. Is yours better ? It looks less heavy. Is that a new model or replacement for the "old" 35/0,95 ? Oh, what do you think about the 7Artisans 35mm 1,2 ? I know it's not such a performer as the 0,95, but it looks very very cool and it's much smaller and lighter. May be I'll buy one for the smaller fujis, for fun. What am I saying ? They are all for fun ! BTW, thanks a lot for the videos you make, I like very much to dig for old digital cameras and lenses.

Do you have any content around servicing old lenses? I own a few old minolta lenses, and some of them would benefit from disassembly and cleaning, but I'm not daring enough to do it :D

First off love your videos, your doing amazing work. I have a question for you, I'd like to know how much of a difference there is in debth of field between a 1.2 and a .95 lens. Am in the market for a fast 35mm and was wondering if the price difference was really worth it. Thanks for your time.

Probably the easiest way to visualize it and play with numbers is to Google a depth of field calculator. There you can input your sensor size along with the focal length and aperture to get an idea of the difference in depth of field and light gathering

Yes you can buy affordable ultrafast lenses now for most mounts, but those are manual focus only which limits the use of such lenses with shallow DOF to some extent. Also the image quality is nothing special unless you stop the lens to F2-2.8+. Then the F0.95 number seems to be more like marketing tool. On the other hand there are lenses that are F1.4 and already quite sharp right from being wide open. Can you do comparison of this TTArtisan 35/0.95 with Sima 35/1.4Art? :)

I mean, sure, and it's a good point for people shopping around to remember. If you want a sharp 1.4 and can afford the sharpest 1.4 and don't mind the weight, go for it. If you're shooting at f0.95 it's gonna be soft. But I don't think that removes the point of a lens faster than 1.4. At the end of the day it's still letting in more light and has a more shallow depth of field, even if it's soft at the aperture - it's an aperture the other lens doesn't even have. Then if you want it to be as sharp as another lens, stop it down. There's always trade-offs with lenses, whether it's price, AF, size and weight (that sigma is huge). I do want that Sigma though. It's one of the few nice modern third party lenses that are available in K mount. I've heard it's killer on the Pentax K-1.

No, the f0.95 is not just marketing speak. You would precisely use a lens like this wide open _because_ of its deficiencies and other intrinsic characteristics. The fast optics maximizes background separation. The vignetting draws attention to the central subject. The coma provides a central sharpness that "glows" and a more pastel palette. It'd be nice for some portraiture and semi-macros. Now, I wouldn't pay Leica $15k for the privilege of a Noctilux. I'd very much consider $200 to TTArtisan, et al. however.

Curious if you have compared this to a manual focus 50mm F1.4 + focal reducer. I've been working on a comparing a bunch and a Nikon 50mm F1.4 (the old legacy MF) and cheap pixco focal reducer is a remarkable combo for an effective 35mm F1.0. You DO have a Pentax K 50mm F1.2 which would be even more spectacular. Get a Canon EF Focal reducer, and a K to EF adapter (cheaper to buy those than reducers - i.e. you can use the EF reducer for canon, pentax, nikon, m42 etc lenses). This will give you a 35mm F0.86.

I have to add to this. Since posting this, I've acquired a Rokinon 50mm F1.4. It's ~$250 in canon EF mount on amazon, and can be found for under $200 used. On a focal reducer, the full lens combination is a 35mm F1.0. This has not left my bag. The sharpness is astonishing wide open. It's easily sharper and more contrasty than my 50s from pentax, nikon, zeiss, canon and minolta. The pixco focal reducer is $70, which means altogether it's a $320 lens assembly - but that focal reducer can be used as an adapter for other lenses too. It just seems almost silly, that I can have a cheap F1.0 lens with this level of IQ. Downside is the size compared to other vintage 50s, but given the quality, I can't complain.

No doubt its impressive but you have to keep in mind, that you have to multiply the aperture by the cropfactor to get the FF equivalent. This is "only" a 52mm f/1,4 FF equivalent... (aperture= focallength/ front glass diameter --> focal length+1,5 --> aperture+1,5)

You are correct. That conversion is just for calculating equivalent depth of field, which is important. The lens is still letting in more light than a 1.4 on FF though, which for helping low light exposures and keeping shutter speeds up makes a difference.

My essential tremor would appreciate it. I did get lower hit rates on mirrorless with ois then on pentax dslr with ibis. Fuji still only puts ibis in their bulky models. I guess an olympus ep7 would be nice and compact, but due to small sensor the iso will have to be turned down. Endless fight.

There's definitely some fun in this but do photographers really believe any of these super-fast lenses are going to produce great results wide open? It all depends what you're looking for and, I think, there's some real skill in using the lens appropriately (like you're misty morning example). Personally, I wouldn't go too far out of my way for 'super-fast' as most of my shooting seems to be between F2.8 and F5.6. Maybe I'm too old skool.....

These are usefull for night photography, I'd rather get a picture that's not sharp as opposed to a grainy one from having to crank the iso It's less of a problem with full frame cameras, but it is suitable for APSC sensors which is what this lens is made for.

Your voice is full of low frequencies so sm57 does not cut it! you will sound better with a live mic like SM58! or cut your low freq in post....imho

If you've another few benjamins to spare, checkout their 50mm f0.95 for the Leica M mount. This is, of course full frame. This is _it_ If you've ever wanted a Noctilux but didn't want to sell your first born for it.

Super fast lenses are really a gimmick which stopped being useful when optical viewfinders went out. Yeah, I like the wide open look, but I always felt like most of the genuinely interesting compositions I've seen were taken stopped down. There is however a huge selection of boring and amateurish photo albums, all close-ups and awkward landscapes shot wide open.

I touch upon the cost and give my verdict about this stuff over there (I don't want to spam snappiness's channel). But I just wanted to mention it as I think its basically the fastest modern optic selling currently? I might be wrong about that, would love to know.

it's f/0.95 because it has an integrated "speed booster", that's why you can get such a fast lens. Drawback? Only APS-C obviously.

the reason for these fast lenses is because on apsc, these f0.95 is equal to an f1.4 on FF. people shoot these days with more apsc than before (look at the film era, when almost everyone used an 35mm film camera). so for the somewhat amature/ pro photographer who wants this kind of images it is an affordable way to get the same look but on apsc.

Yes, that's a good analysis. Also these short mirrorless flange distances make the design easier and the cost lower, in combination with supporting smaller sensor sizes.

It doesn't look like it from their lens element diagram, but which would be fine actually. Hmmm... So, I should get the L-mount version of this lens. Mate it to a Metabone's L to MFT booster. That'll give me a 25mm FF equivalent FoV at f0.707 for my Panasonic GX-85. Take that Leica!

@@mipmipmipmipmip That's just ballpark numbers. It's really f1.0 to f0.707. And if you had the speedbooster custom built, that'd be right. The caveat is that I haven't tried this. I haven't bothered checking what the actual flange distance would be now with two adapters in line. That'll affect the actual amount of magnification and light increase. By the way, a speedbooster is just marketing-speak for magnifying glass, albeit a really nice one. A FF lens projects an image circle much bigger than the area covered by a MFT sensor (that's where the crop comes from.) So, with a magnifying lens there, the re-projected image circle is now smaller and fits the MFT sensor better. The same amount of light covers a smaller area. That has two big advantages. First, intensity per unit area is higher, hence the "speedboost", the faster lens. Second, the image is sharper also because the image is smaller.

These lens are a fail out of the box. It's designed specifically for spec sheet racing, like what you're doing here. It's ultra soft, not in a good way, until you stop it down. Even then it's not great.

No such thing as a lens that's too fast. If you need it, then get it. And nobody can say "fast lens" unless they're referring to at least an f/1.4 lens. Or maybe f/2 if you're talking about a 300 mm lens.

So much of it driven not by the desire to shoot that wide open in low light, but by the desire for insane bokeh rendering backgrounds just literal color blurs. I like bokeh, but I don’t understand a background that looks like a couple color blobs without any shape at all as the holy grail of portraiture. I like fast lenses, but tough to see the rationale for a 0.95 lens. I know some have justification, but the obsession for fast is a marketing manager’s dream.

I'll take sharp over fast any day of the week. The tta 0.95 is not a very sharp lens, especially wide open. The f/1.2 is sharper and less expensive.

Really don't need much more than 2.8 or 2.4 I like 5.6 . F2 is overrated. I like be able to see stuff in the background. Street signs , stores signs etc. They bokeh craziness is a bit transhumanism in a weird way.
