OMG. You outdid yourself with this one Scotty. So hard to film with the extreme contrast, but you made it work. You soooooooo made the right decision to play it safe on the camp site. I had some close friends come very close to ending their days on the Span Outdoors, Claustral Canyon tragedy (if you don't know it. look it up). They were so close that they were the first to find those that weren't so lucky. My take home line from them was "Never do a canyon if it's overcast." Camping in a slightly nicer spot is so not worth it.

the biggest issue I feel with that camping spot, even if it doesn't rain in that location, how big is the catchment for that creek/river. Check the existing flood debris level, then you can make a better judgment on the location for camp. Great vid mate! Itching to get out myself. Been a few months with how busy I am through the warmer months.
@daviddilley8310
@daviddilley8310 2 жыл бұрын
Agree! I always camp at least 50m from water, unless I am above it on a ridge with a way out if it does pour rain. That creek came up a couple of feet in 30 mins...that's why it's called a "flash" flood and they can be bigger and quicker than that. As tempting as it is with the beauty, it's generally not a great idea to camp too close to streams etc. Have made comment before an older indigenous friend pointed out they generally camped a couple hundred metres from water.."Only you white fellas are silly enough to camp closer". Waterholes may harbour mozzies, and the wildlife will avoid the water if it reeks of human.
@OutdoorsOvernight
@OutdoorsOvernight 2 жыл бұрын
@@daviddilley8310 I have been told and read the same. I am guilty of camping closer to water. But before I do, I check the forecasts for the entire catchment area.

What a wonderful place to spend time. I grew up in the Appalachian mountains of the eastern US and spent much of my youth doing overnight explorations of the canyons and ridges there. The mountains there are completely different from yours, but that is the beauty of our world, every place has something different to offer. Hey man, I’m currently in those Appalachian Mountains, specifically the western, Allegheny side in WV. I was thinking the same thing about this vid and where he was - that there was something really similar and different at the same time. Just wanted to say that for all the hidden spots five miles into a hike, there are just as many amazing places fifty yards off a road that I know you could get to. Maybe armed with a fishing pole instead of hiking boots! Anyway, really liked your comment.

always enjoy the videos. in terms of plugging leave no trace, a better practice you could adopt is to carry over some sand/gravel soil (something non-organic) from nearby and to build a little base a few inches deep, and as round as you think your fire will be, maybe like 20 inches. build your fire on top of that. then when you clean up in the morning, after you scatter ashes, you also scatter the sand soil, and not leave a fire scar on the rocks...that is best practice leave no trace for fires.
