The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.
My love for the game only continues to grow as time goes on. I love studying and analyzing the game, with an unbiased perspective. Feel free to subscribe, follow me on social media, and celebrate this amazing game and it's rich history with me!

What's most impressive just like Rodman is that he was considered undersized at the position, yet still so dominant. Players like this are the best example for kids coming up thinking you have to fit this or that mold. Just do what you do at your best.

When Jonny eventually gets to his Pistons all-time team, it's going to be so interesting, with these two specifically being fascinating pieces of the puzzle. Detroit lays claim to the best versions of two absolutely elite defenders, but both are offensive liabilities. I feel like, building an all-time Pistons roster, you HAVE to lean into the unique defensive talent you're given, but going up against other all-time rosters, you definitely have to be careful in building around TWO players who are likely to have single-digit scoring.

@@chrisdevault5823 Ben being undersize helped him anchor his weight against Shaq. Shaq became so frustrated that he started throwing elbows everytime they met at the post, Wallace wasn't a dirty defender, but he started countering this by literally locking his feet to the ground like a door wedge side to side with Shaq, just like Rodman used to do to Barkley, but unlike Barkley Shaq couldn't move nor back down Ben there as he was too Big to put him off balance 😂 Ben was also the only Center in NBA history who could cook Gaurds due to his height too.
@Paratet
@Paratet 2 ай бұрын
Yep. It's easy to look at Shaq's numbers in a vacuum in that series and say that Shaq still did well, but Shaq's playoff average up to that point was 10 points higher. The only person to hold him to a lower ppg was KG. That's an absolutely insane comparison. Also noteworthy is that Shaq was so frustrated that he didn't even guard Ben, which resulted in Ben averaging 18ppg in that same final.

The best undrafted player all time. Ben was a undersized 6’9 center with no offensive game whatsoever. However his brute Athleticsm, defensive IQ and grittiness made up for every lack of his offense. Guy avg 13+rpg and 3+bpg for multiple seasons. And not forgot how many shots he altered at the rim and covered space a little bit outside the paint also. The moment Ben left the pistons they where not the same anymore defensively

Great video, Jonny! Ben Wallace was a great player. I remember the 2004 Finals and being amazed at both the Pistons' defense and how they beat the Lakers in 5. Wallace reminds me of what I read about Wes Unseld. Both are smaller centers (6'9 for Wallace, 6'7 for Unseld) with superb defensive skills and solid rebounding. He definitely is one of the best defensive players ever alongside Russell and Olajuwon. Superb video again :). Have a great Saturday :). Take care.

I often argue that Ben Wallace should be in my all time starting 5. My reasoning, I don’t need the 5 best players. I need the best team I can put together. There is only so much ball to go around and guys like Rodman and Wallace have huge impacts on the game without being ball dominant, and serving a role outside of scoring.

Ben Wallace was a beast! Great video Jonny and excellent take on the lack of importance the league has on defense. I personally think that aggressive defense and rebounding leads to great offensive opportunities. I think it was Pat Reilly who said "no rebounds, no rings" or something like that. Magic Johnson talks about in his book (Magics Touch) about the importance of defense and rebounding that contributed to showtime.

As much as I love Chauncy and his leadership and class that he brought to the team, this was Ben Wallace’s team. He was the heart and soul that brought that grid and grind back to Detroit since the bad boys days. And adding some offense of help just made the image even better. Once he left the whole dynamic of the team changed. They were still good defensively and a top 2 team in the East but it wasn’t the same as it was during their true championship era (04-06)

People don't realize Ben Wallace was the Only All Star & All NBA player on the team when they won in 04 & lost to the Spurs in 7 in the finals the next year. I'm aware Rasheed was an All Star in Portland. However, in 04 & 05 Ben Wallace was the only All Star. Hamilton & Billups would become All Stars starting in 06 with Rasheed getting recognition again in 06 as well. Also, Ben was 7th in MVP voting. 3 top 10 MVP finishes in total. For context imagine Draymond as the only All Star & All NBA player on the Warriors when they won their 1st ring & Steph & Klay didn't become All Stars until years later. Ben Wallace was All NBA & DPOY before Billups, Prince, Hamilton, & Sheed became Pistons. He also had 2 of his 4 DPOYS before Sheed became a Piston. This was indeed Ben's team, hence why he is the 1st inducted into the Hall of Fame & only one as of today.

Got goosebumps watching Big Ben in his prime, really willing to see a video about a guy with probably the coolest nickname AK47. IMHO one of the most underrated players in his era, who brought Utah without Malone and Stockton to the conference finals against prime spurs. AK47 was a defensive machine. Just imagine being PF in that era and covering prime Duncan, Garnet, Melo etc in nearly every game. Dude made 5 by 5 three times (only Hakeem made more) and had over 20 games where he lacked like 1 block or 2 steals. Lead the league in blocks. It was hard to see him fade in last years on the bench, but in his prime ak47 could truly become one of the most multipurpose players to do everything on the court

Ben was the right man, at the right time. Detroit embraces the underdog, blue-collar athlete and Ben epitomized that. The Palace was rocking -- leading the league in attendance with reasonable ticket prices pulling in the Pistons peers, Gen X. If you do a video on the Pistons defense alone, look into their guru Herb Brown, Larry's brother, who coached that D.

Ben is great in his era. He would be thrash in this era and won't have a job. I'm glad he's one of the greatest defenders of all and he's in the right era.
