Thank you so much for taking the time to test and also sharing the results. I have a Kylin rta and using a single notch coil. I have found that using the overly tight method you recommend has given me less spit back( I can also hear this), more flavour and no dry hits. It's resolved all the problems you can have with a notch coil and it's quick ramp up time. Thanks again ☺

Hello Morten I wanted to let you know I’m now wicking all my builds very hard after viewing your experiment. It works exactly as you said I’m now having my wicks last at least three times longer than my fluffing and combing methods. Thanks so much

I want to truly THANk you. I wicked my RDA as you said and it worked amazingly great, BUT the most amazing and astonishing thing is that I have an RTA, the Kylin most known for its leaking issues. All reviewers and people advice to fluff the cotton very well and never but to much wick. and I followed them just to find a lot of leaking and if not then a spit back, but it not just a spit , its like drinking a burning eguice, its literally drinking. Then when I saw your video I immediately followed your instruction in stuffing the coil with cotton and never fluff it. And the result which according to my knowledge is the total opposite of what I know. Is No Leaking, No Spit Back. Double the Flavor and almost Double the Cloud Production. So I'm so thankful to you and keep experimenting for the benefit of you and of all who will watch your videos,

Thank you for this series! It really changed the way I approach wicking. I had a difficult time keeping my (already tight) wick properly saturated with juice in my Serpent SMM, always getting a slightly dry vape. Today I went ahead and against my instincts kept the entire wick strained - very - tight and slightly twisted. With a sharp cut at the ends and absolutely no fluffing I'm getting much better saturation and fast liquid draw. Flavor naturally improved as well. I could write a page or two about different things I observed but am gonna cut it here. Thanks for pointing me into the right direction!

I chain vape this with no dry hits, and when I say chain vape I mean 100+ milliliters of E-juice a day. I really appreciate the work and effort you put into these videos and hope you keep making them, anyone giving you shit about this method has obviously never even bothered to try it and are just trolling your channel for a reaction. I came to the same conclusion about wicking as you through trial and error. I found that tighter wicking and leaving the ends alone seem to work well. It also keeps re-wicking faster and less fussy which makes it less bothersome to re-wick more often. I find that if I can dry-burn, clean and re-wick in only 5 or 8 minutes then I won't put if off as long :)

Hey, I just found a good technique today for wicking hard. After you get the tip through the coil, twist the cotton in opposite directions like you would wring out water from a cloth. It spirals and compresses reducing the diameter of the wick making it so much easier to pull through delicate coil builds. Once it is in place un twist it to expand it back to shape. Bobs your uncle. :) I just remembered it today and it is not my idea. I can't find the video to credit the person, but it really works well. If anyone remembers the video chuck it up here.

Thanks for the video. I watched all 4 parts, very useful info. I had problems with wicking before watching your videos and I think I may have solved what I was doing wrong(just rewicked my RDA). One thing that I'm still wondering is once the wick in the coil is wet and you start vaping, how fast does the wick pull new juice into the coil (or pulling juice into the partially wet wick in the coil).

Wish you would have stated the BRAND of the Japanese Cotton. I have found there to be substantial differences between brands, with "Koh Gen Do" brand being the best. Especially when taking into account things like flavor neutrality, lack of bleaches (safety), and scorch resistance. I have found that "Koh Gen Do" is more likely to survive dry hits than other cheaper brands. It also has a cleaner taste and is the purest and safest JOC on the market. IMHO

also, if you put some power through the coil, it will wick faster, thins the liquid out enough that the cotton absorbs it like mad. This is how I get my ridiculously tight wicking to wick up faster.

Yes. You're experiments are really great. I know you are maybe not very interrested in the matter of doing this experients for the MTL vapers around. But I would love to hear, if you think the same conclusions of your experiments (hard wicking, no fluffing) apply to wicking a MTL RTA where you mostly use 0.2mm - 04mm round wires with a inner diameter of 2mm - 3mm having 6 - 10 windings. Having mostly a slightly spaced coil or a microcoil.
@mortenoen4345 жыл бұрын
The laws of capillary forces will not change. The more fibres, and the tighter they are together, will transport fluids higher and faster. With RTAs you just have to be sure that there is room for breathing in the wick channels. You can make a hole with tweezers or a roll of mesh like a snorkle.
@markstave72056 жыл бұрын
Nice demo, thanks for doing it. I notice that stainless steel rope is gaining in popularity as wicking. I have several attys that use it and the wicking is pretty good. Any chance you might experiment with those?
@mortenoen4346 жыл бұрын
The short answer is no:-) I test the stuff I buy and use, and nothing else. But I never know what the future brings...
@markstave72056 жыл бұрын
Morten Oen you might consider one of the RDTA tanks for yourself. When used with stainless steel ropes to move liquid to the deck, and cotton in the coil with the ends on top of the rope, the wicking keeps up even with higher wattage, and the flavor and vapor is similar (IMO) to a dripper
@csaw51736 жыл бұрын
thank you for your hard work! very interesting "series". As I was watching your videos i was thinking about wrapping your wire around the wick instead of pulling it through it might disturb the cotton less if you do it like that (Sorry to be a dimwit, dumb-skull 😉 but inquisitive minds create an interesting world)

I really like these videos, but I think a better demonstration for showing what ways of wicking work better would be to not only show how well they absorb juice, but also test out how wicking method vapes. Showing the absorption does give us some information, but it might not say how good of a vaping experience it will give you, how good the flavor will be, what the vapor production is like, how quickly you might get a dry hit, etc. Not criticizing, just a suggestion.

When I wick hard, it seems to choke off the juice feeding to the middle of the coil and I don't get as much flavor, maybe I need to experiment a little further
@mortenoen4346 жыл бұрын
Hi Dennis. I don't think it's possible to wick so hard that you choke off the juice. I had some discussions with an engineer about that. Theoreticaly there is a choke off point, but you will never get there without destroying your coil and tearing apart the cotton.
@jas-FPV6 жыл бұрын
Had the same feeling in an Kensei RTA and had the same issue, but I think I found the reason. Because the wick is not fluffed or so, there is not enough room for air to travel into the Tank to remedy the vacuum resulting from the wick sucking the liquid. I used my pliers to create a little room between the wick ends in the juice well (between the strands coming from each coil), to allow air to travell faster into the tank and this did the trick. In an RDA you dont have to worry about vacuum, but in tanks, I guess, this is one of the main reasons a tank works or not.
@happybuddha135 жыл бұрын
If I don't fluff or trim my cotton, aren't I choking the wicking ports (the well where the cotton goes through) ?
@mortenoen4345 жыл бұрын
In a RTA you need to take great care not to block the ports. Use a piece of mesh as a snorkle, or just a toothpick to make a hole. Read up on Jurin`s law on wikipedia, and apply it in your wicking. My technique is mostly for RDA, but if you read the comments, a lot of RTA users have done this with great success. Good luck in your experiments!
@navnithmaudgil37875 жыл бұрын
@@mortenoen434 Thanks for replying mate. I don't have a mesh atm so I will have to resort to the toothpick trick you speak of. I can find numerous discussions on the mesh snorkel but non on making a hole using a toothpick. Could you please point me on how people do this ? This morning I made a hole using a toothpick in the saturated cotton where it goes into the serpent elevate's wicking port. But my guess is sooner or later that hole will be filled/saturated by the ejuice effectively rendering it useless.
@happybuddha135 жыл бұрын
@@mortenoen434 I dont see a difference between an RTA and an RDA as far as wicking and wicking ports go. But my experience is limited to a wasp nano and a serpent elevate. So I did a couple of experiments over the past few days and found this method worked best for me for a serpent elevate. A 3.5mm ID coil, wicked as hard as possible (I 'impregnate' my firebolt cotton with more cotton by spreading it apart with very light hands so as not to break too many strands) and for the wicking, I cut up an upside down L shape of the wick. Where the length of the L is going down the wicking port (dont care about the length) and the breadth part sits slightly above the wicking port. Thus not choking the wicking port. And after reading up on Jurin's law It seems like the thickest cotton (instead of fluffed) will have a greater capillary action - an in my case where the cotton is cut in an inverted L, after the liquid wicks up the length of the L, it immediately wicks up even faster as it finds more channels to 'soak up'. I also think nature shows us this action in the roots of the trees, the thinner roots go out and suck as much water as possible and then the as the water is soaking up towards the thicker roots it wicks much faster. Just thought to add this here.

@mortenoen4345 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I have been thinking about that lately:-)
@skyhookspirits5 жыл бұрын
@@mortenoen434 I think it would be great to summarize your findings for these major topics: 1) What is best wick tightness in coil? 2) Is the type of coil a factor in wick tightness? 3) Does it make any difference how the fibers run in the wick? 4) Should the skin layer on top and bottom of the cotton be removed or left on? 5) Does fluffing the wick ends make any difference? 6) If most of the coils used are 2.5 3.5mm ID, what ID is best? 7) Does the hang down length of the wick make any difference? 8) Is there an optimum position or angle for air flow to hit the coil? These pretty much cover your various experiments and what most vapors who build need to know. If one watches the various reviewers on KZfaq, there is much myth and little fact. Morten Oen no,my point is...if you get better wicking from a tighter wick then why do you get dry hits from over wicking?p.s. Your absolutely crazy for not using rta’s there are so many good ones out now.imagine using an rda where the wicks never get dry “at least until the tank is empty”

Ok:-) RTAs can have good flavor, I'll grant you that. My first objection though, is that they are big and heavy. And they make my mods un-balanced or top heavy. They break easy. They are very messy to work with if you want to experiment or change coils. Many leaks. A tank holds only half of the volume in a squonker, and holds only 1-2ml more than my favorite 30mm RDA. The build decks are tiny, so you have little clouds compared to an RDA, or the vape is too hot, and you can't use big coils. And finally, if you wick tight to make the coil efficient, spatter free and a tad faster, you clog the channels so that you get a vacuum problem in the tank, so the juice will not flow up the cotton and in to the coil. You can see this very clearly as there are no bubbles after you take a draw. To boil it down: If a device tries to do everything, it's never best at anything. There is however 1 exception where I have used a tank, and will use a tank again. This summer I worked night shifts as a security guard, and beeing outside, in the pitch black night, in the rain, I was very pleased with my water tight Geek Vape Aegis and the tank that came with it.

Only in a RTA or RTDA do you need to thin out your wicks because the juice holes/channels are the limiting factor. In an RDA you dont have limiting factors

5 people hate proper wicking...that's all I can deduce from the dislikes...keep wicking inefficiently then!
