Hola, I'm Nate. I used to not know any Spanish at all, and I had no interest in learning the language. I thought learning Spanish would be boring, a waste of time, and would provide no value to my life. Then I started taking Spanish classes in high school and everything changed for me. I struggled with learning the language a lot at first, but thanks to my teachers and my Spanish speaking friends, they helped make the learning process fun. Within a few months, I had gotten to a conversational level, but more important, I had become a more confident person. The real win for me, though, was the friendships I made and strengthened. I discovered that not only did I have higher self esteem, but being out in the real world with people, whether old friends or new ones I met, made me feel more alive and connected with the world around me. Now it's my goal to create videos that make you smile and inspire you to learn Spanish or another language!

This resonates. Letting go of thinking in English is def one of the hardest things. Like learning to swim and letting go of the side of the pool.

It comes in time, daily repetition is key. Eventually you'll see Spanish words, phrases, and expressions just like English ones.

To truly internalise a language so that you have natural fluency, allowing you to converse every day without significant barriers, it takes 3 years of using the language every day. It can't be done in 6 months or a year realistically. Sure, there can be a good level of ability after this time, but it really takes a number of years especially if you want to actually enjoy the process.

Creo que solo es posible para un hablante de inglés aprender un lenguaje romántico o alemánico en un año porque los idiomas comparten muchas palabras. El inglés tiene miles de conjugadas con el español y otros idiomas románticos.

Un mexicano y un venezolano hablando en inglés. Lo digo porque desde que estuvisteis en España el acento os ha cambiado tanto que parecéis de allí.

Let that go. Everyone is nervous at the beginning because no one wants to make mistakes and be embarrassed. But, once you accept that you WILL make many mistakes, it gets easier to laugh about it. One way to begin is to book a few lessons on Italki or a similar site. Once you start speaking you’ll quickly lose the anxiety when you realize that no one freaks out over your errors. Good luck!

I have been studying English when I was 12 years old and now I am 27 and I still don't understand, I have no idea, when a English native speaker speaks to me and I have to guess some words, I need help.😢

i would say to find friends who share hobbies that you have, or like the things you like who speak english. i know many russians / south americans who speak broken english, but can i understand them just fine? yes. you might not be fluent, but the goal is to be at least understood even with your flaws. just talking on a day to day basis, or even just occasionally talking to english speakers can boost your skills. listen to music and sing along, memorize parts of shows you like, these could really help! good luck with your english journey! i myself am learning spanish now so i can communicate with my south american friends.

I agree with speaking but I keep hearing from dreaming Spanish that I should wait it’s too late for me since I used to speak Spanish in high school.

Interesting video. I’d like to know what you think about not speaking until you have an advanced level of understanding the language. This is what Pablo at Dreaming Spanish advises which is completely opposite to the advice in this video of speaking early and as often as possible. Many people seem to have great success with Pablo’s method of comprehensible input until advanced level and then incorporating speaking at that point. They say to practice in the early stages you should do crosstalk instead. Which is you speaking your own native language to the spanish speaker and they speak only in spanish to you.

If you want it badly enough, you will learn. Most American high school students don't want to learn a foreign language because, in their minds, they already speak a language (English), so why acquire another one? The result is that the only kids who learn a foreign tongue to any appreciable extent are the foreign language nerds (like me).

The guest spoke a little at the end, he has a Venezuelan accent. He's definitely spent a lot of time speaking Spanish.

I’ve never seen this guy have an actual conversation in Spanish. He gives great tips and I don’t doubt he speaks great, but it’s weird that there are little to no videos of him actually speaking.

Seems like all the people on KZfaq who claim to have become fluent in one year or less are always years into speaking the language, often living in a spanish speaking country, so it's impossible to know how good they actually were after 6 months or a year. There is one KZfaqr that said she became fluent in 3 months, but didn't start KZfaq until 8 years later. People really have to stop purposefully conflating conversational Spanish with fluency for clickbait titles. Really does not actually help anyone who may not know that going from zero to true fluency in a year is just not how adult language learning works, for anyone.

Great point! I always tell my students that it’s important to view the language learning process as a life long journey. The most important thing is to have fun along the way, be consistent, and be patient! Saludos :)

That's not true, it just takes repetition. Remember, he didn't define it as speaking like a native, just being able to understand normal conversation and express yourself.
