I've been a little nervous to post a gerbil care video since I'm still quite new to them, but so many of you have been asking so I thought I would just share how I personally care for mine. If you have any suggestions or great gerbil sites to recommend please let me know in the comments!
Thanks to Carefresh for sponsoring this video! Nominate your shelter to be featured in their Carefresh Give Backs program: www.healthy-pet.com/carefresh... (A new rescue is picked every TWO months, I accidentally said every month in the video)

Kaylie Jakobsen I know. I love the channel too 😊 But on a serious note; I don’t know if you’re doing it by mistake or it’s some kind of well meant attempt at humour, but constantly calling and addressing Pickles as a “she” is getting old and just plain rude. He must be more than tired from it by now..

I really like your care 😊 as a long-time gerbil owner myself, I’d like to add a couple of things: firstly, cardboard. I know you mentioned this but I just wanted to stress it - IMO, cardboard boxes are the best toys for gerbils! Tissue boxes, cereal boxes, toilet rolls... anything small enough to sensibly fit in a cage. Since gerbils can’t have plastic toys and wooden toys are expensive/destroyed rapidly, I think they can get a reputation for being expensive pets, when actually if you use cardboard toys they can be a lot cheaper than hamsters. Gerbils shred them which is good for three reasons: it keeps them stimulated, keeps down teeth (slightly) and creates more bedding for them to burrow in. The second thing I’d like to mention is the handling aspect. Gerbils don’t need human interaction to be happy - they need a gerbil friend! They will neither benefit nor suffer for being handled. It is up to you as the owner whether to tame them or not, and there is no right answer. Personally, I love to be able to interact and snuggle with them but don’t take them out of the cage at all. I think it’s quite important to at least be able to interact with them in their cage so that when one of a group is left on their own (i.e. cagemate passes of old age) they can still have social interactions, however, they don’t need to be fully tame for this at all. Keep up the great work Pickles! ❤️

I think 2 or more wheels is a great idea when you have more than one animal cage. Sometimes the animals run in opposite directions at the same time or one animal travels to the top while the other animal is always running on the bottom. I've seen animals in less safe situations on the wheel when 2 are on the wheel at the same time, especially on the wire.

Gerbils are awesome pets, there are not many videos about them which is what people tend to look at more for information. Iv had 4 gerbils and lost my last one in January, and he made it to 4yrs old. Each pair had one that would easily jump on my hand to eat a treat where as the other would think about it and sometimes wouldn’t attempt it. I also trained them to come out when I rattled their treat bag (called healthy bites apple flavour) and to sit on my shoulder. I found rubbing your hands in their bedding helped tame them quicker. Going up to the cage at least twice a day for a while helped also. Weekends use to be their run around on the floor days in which I use to sit by their playpen. It’s a shame there aren’t many information videos about them because they are great pets interesting to watch and are lovable when tame.

Hi Pickles! I’m so glad you made a video about this! I really hope you see this. I have recently had a situation with my gerbils, where one of my gerbils has attacked the other on his neck and feet. I was very worried about Caramel (Victim) but luckily he’s ok, and he’s healing very well. I don’t understand why they would attack eachother, they are 2 years old now, and have NEVER had any issues except fighting over food. The only two reasons I can think of is A. That the stress of their tiny cages :( made them aggressive or B. That Coco (Attacker) is younger than Caramel, and wanted to be dominate. I’d appreciate any tips or strategies to help this, thank you! (Yes, they are separated now. I’ve been trying to introduce them in a bigger bin cage and nothing has gone wrong) Tganjs again!

I think it's fine to hand tame gerbils, but not as much as hamsters. I think they enjoy a little more independence especially when they're with another gerbil, and hand taming them a lot might ruin their fun. I just like it when they interact with each other and help each other with digging tunnels. As for the reptile sand part, I'm glad we use the same exact sand. I wasn't sure if the calcium sand that's more common in pet shops are okay so I went with the natural sand ones I found on Amazon. People also recommend play sand but I'm just not willing to buy those huge bags and my oven isn't really working well right now (I use an oven toaster and I don't even want to put anything not food related in there)

What beautiful gerbils you have! I’m loving the blue bedding. I use Carefresh as well as Kaytee Clean & Cozy, hemp, aspen, and Timothy Hay. I use the hay to layer in as I add bedding. It helps their tunnels stay in tact longer. A 40 gallon is technically the bare minimum for a pair. However, I highly recommend upgrading to a larger enclosure if you can manage it. Bigger is always better. I have a pair of gerbils (brothers). Their enclosure is actually a 160 gallon repurposed display case. Females have a much higher chance of declanning than males. A larger enclosure would give them more space to burrow as well as more space to relax away from one another if the need arises. Look into purchasing a wooden wheel or two. I bought mine from Misoto. Plastic can kill if ingested. Gerbils don’t actually need wheels to be happy; unlike hamsters. As long as gerbils have plenty of digging space, a wheel is not necessary. There’s a FB group called, ‘Gerbils.’ It contains extensive learning Units on gerbil husbandry. I look forward to seeing your gerbil knowledge grow. ☺️ Thanks for sharing your video!

When it comes to hand taming, I think it really depends on what the gerbils feel comfortable with. I've got a pair of boys right now that seem to really enjoy being handled. I only have to put my hand in their cage and both of them will happily walk on my hand and stay there. But I've also had gerbils in the past that were not so happy to be handled, and that's perfectly okay. :) Also, males are thought to be a bit more docile than females. I believe in the wild, female gerbils have dominance when living in a group.

I did alot of research on hamsters and gerbils. I have two girls with drastically different personalities and favorite toys. One recently got red nose due to a sand dust issue. I was incredibly upset and was frustrated at the lack of information available and had to use a fair bit of reasoning and trial and error to take out the problem material. Her nose is already starting to look better. Paying attention to your pets and their desires is rewarding but more information about gerbils would be nice. Especially with the red nose scare I just had.

It's recommended that you only do a full clean at most once a month if they're in a small enclosure, because the whole process of cleaning is very stressful for gerbils as it removes all of their scent trails. If you have a full size enclosure (0.5 meters squared floorspace, 10-16 inches of bedding) with a sand bath, you may only need to deep clean them once every 2 or 3 months, as long as you make sure to spot clean daily, paying particular attention to their sand bath, as this is where they tend to go to the toilet the most 😊

@@coletonhuggins1085 Firstly, dont call me honey. Secondly I dont care how long you've had rabbits. I've never seen ever anyone say that rabbits prefer to be alone as its completely untrue. Rabbits are social animals. Any good, proper owner will tell you that. A rabbit will never have the same connection with their owner as they do with other rabbits. Clearly you're just making excuses for keeping them alone or you're not looking after them properly (small cage perhaps) that's making your rabbits unhappy and putting them in a situation where they may fall out. No human will ever replace another rabbit. Ever. Also showing rabbits means nothing on knowledge of the animal. I could show an animal and treat them like shit. Showing doesn't equal knowledge. Also how long you've had an animal doesn't equal knowledge either as you could have an animal for 10 years but be doing it wrong where as someone could do proper research, join groups for information from knowledgeable owners and be a better owner than someone who's had the animal for 10 years. Time means shit.
