I like the Borax and Jello powder as well. I use the raspberry flavour on skein chunks and that’s killer mix for those sweet tooth salmon in marinas and harbours. The Pautzke is great for loose eggs, I also don’t river cure the eggs. Thanks for the demonstration Fray. Good to know a few different methods.

Nice! When I used to cure salmon eggs I did the salt method but a tad different. I would river harden, salt water bath until they float, rinse the eggs off in cold water and then soak the eggs in cold water and they would become bouncy balls. It was crazy! The one thing I found was after I stuck them in the fridge, they would shrivel up a tiny bit but were still very hard when tying. What does the sugar do instead of using plain water?

Salt sugar cure is by far my favorite in terms of scent, but river cured eggs just last forever in the fridge. Nice to pull out some bags that have sitting in the fridge for 3 months and still look prestige. Low scent but look great, more natural looking than beads IMO.

I'm new to curing roe and wondering if someone can answer this. I'm trying the salt brine and brown sugar method, but my spring/king/chinook eggs won't float to the top. It's been 2 hours and it sounded like Fish Fray didn't wait that long. Can someone explain why? Or what I should do different? I used 1/4 cup of salt per litre of cold tap water. I also started the curing about 36 hours after the catch. And roe came from a more mature white spring. If any of that is the reason, please let me know. I've taken some out at intervals and kept em in separate batches to do some testing. Gonna leave a batch just soaking in the brine until some float.

If you don’t river cure the loose eggs, will you still get a decently firm egg with just salt cure?

Does anyone use fresh non cured eggs anymore. I know they go bad in a week but there is nothing better than fresh spawn bags. Also I hate that spawn netting and magic thread. I use scarf material and plain old white sewing thread. Scarfs are harder to break open on snags and easier to tie.
