Cool footage Peter! Was on holiday in Toronto and managed to catch the Argos game versus Ottawa, thought I saw you there as well. Really liked the gameday atmosphere. Not as big as an NFL game but alot more chill and relaxed. And even tho there isnt alot of Canadian or American football to shoot here in Europa I always get some inspiration from your work to use on the sports that I usually film. Keep it up!

Very helpful video, Peter. I normally make commercials and narrative stuff. This year I get to film a whole bunch of sports to make promos and was looking for BTS/inpiration for how I should approach my shots. I like your approach and framing. Quick question about shutter speed and frame rate: What do you normally recommend? Are you always locked in at 120 fps and somewhere above 1/240? Like 1/400 or so? Also for lens choice. I have the Tamron 35-150 on FX3. you recommend any others? I am looking to stay light and shoot it all handheld if possible. Cheers!

Anyway you could make a video on shooting night games and settings? I’m a very new beginner and really just shooting for my boys high school football season. I’m using an a7sii and struggling with my footage being noisy. I’m good at the start of the game with some sunlight still left but as the night goes on I find myself just bumping up the iso as things get darker. So I’m probably going about it all wrong. I’ve watched almost all your vids and really trying to mimic your really great shots and looks but have a long way to go. Thanks.

Hey Peter, love your content. Quick question, I primarily shoot surf videography in Australia @clipsandgravy, however im struggling with frame rates in terms of shooting and editing timeline. I shoot primarily in 100fps, as I really want the potential to heavily slow down footage but keep the fluid motion of the surfer and the waves. However, a lot of the time I post my footage in real time. I try use the highest framerate possible in Final Cut Pro which is 60fps to reduce the amount of jumpiness but is there a better way of maintaining high frame rate footage for a real time upload and not slow mo. I've heard some people slow it down to say the 25fps timeline, so at 25% speed, then after exporting speed it up 400%. Just confused, hopefully it makes sense.

@petersarellas
@petersarellas 11 ай бұрын
Great lens for that, especially with a full frame body like A7IV. You will need a monopod/tripod/hi-hat to make it work since that’s a bit long to go handheld. Would recommend also keeping a second body with a wider lens so you have the option to get that perspective as well.

Double question 😅 when filming on the 100-400, what do you do when the action is coming straight at you and you can’t zoom out past 100, and do you recommend filming with a 70-200 or 100-400?
@petersarellas
@petersarellas 10 ай бұрын
If I have to get wider than 100mm because someone’s running right at me and I can’t then I either try to frame up an extreme close up shot for a second and let the person walk past me or if I’m filming with two cameras then I might go for my other camera with a wider lens if I feel I have time to get the shot with it. Also you can use both lenses. I find the 70-200mm on a full frame sensor can be a little bit wide at times for a large football field, but for a smaller American field you may find it more suitable than I do on a larger Canadian one. On a crop sensor camera the 70-200 is awesome. 100-400mm is great either for all around game action on a full frame sensor or for very telephoto stuff and filming action that’s across the field on a crop sensor.

for my video production class in college we use canon xf605 cameras and i wanted to take it to go film some sports for a project. would this be a viable camera to do so
@petersarellas
@petersarellas 6 ай бұрын
It definitely isn’t a traditional camera for creative filming as camcorders like that are more often used for live streaming or event video production but seems like a good enough camera to get the job done. Especially if that’s the camera that’s readily available to you then I’d encourage you to take it out and make it work.
