You should have set the zigbee channel to a channel that is not interfered with by your wifi router. You can actually change the channel in ZHA now. I recently just changed from the default channel 15, to 23 since my wifi was broadcasting on channel 2 and that is close to channel 15 for zigbee. I only had to re-pair a few devices.

This is good advice, but the problem is you need to have a router that is capable of keeping the wifi channels constant. Many modern routers auto select the channel, which alas defeats the ZigBee channel setting.

Great video! You did EVERYTHING that I did. One added benefit I've seen after adding new router and swapping out my Nortek with the SkyConnect was some devices having more than one connections to controllers. I love the idea of redundancy in case one router goes down, but I haven't quite figured out yet how to force that since the devices that have the redundant connections seems random. Regardless, stability is key and I don't have devices dropping off all the time like I used to! Btw, I enjoyed your subliminal message at 6:48 ;)

I added zigbee routers (singled smart plugs) in places in my house that i had poor zigbee communication. I did this over a year ago and have had no problems with devices lagging or dropping off. I do not have aqara devices as i had to many of them that dropped off the network even with a router close to it, but what you said in your video brings light (pun intended) to that subject. 😀. Just as a FYI the zigbee protocol is in the same bandwidth and even shares some channels with wifi which can be a contributing factor with zigbee devices falling off of the network.

Also note that Silabs EZSP based Zigbee Coordinator adapters are not yet recommend for Zigbee2MQTT, so do not suggest using SkyConnect for Z2M, and instead get a CC2652P based adapter like Sonoff ZBDongle-P (not Sonoff ZBDongle-E) if going to use Zigbee2MQTT, as while a EZSP radio will work fine you will currently not get the backup and restore function or ability to update Zigbee Coordinator firmware from Z2M

One thing that I did that made moving and re-pairing zigbee devices so much easier was that set up all my automations to use groups. So my automation to turn on lights when the front door opens has a group for the lights and a group for the front door contact. When I change my devices, I only need to update the devices in the group, instead of trying to make sure I get all the automations. It's been a big help when moving back and forth between zha and z2mqtt. 🙂

That's an excellent way to handle it! Groups are very powerful. Ideally, when you reconnect a device the automation should pick it back up, but obviously it doesn't. So groups are a great way to handle it. Great info!

Hi Aaron, thank you for the video. This helped my confidence in the technology decisions I've made. I'm starting out with home automation going home assistant, but went the route of the Sonoff dongle-e, which uses the same chipset as the Sky Connect. Since I'm starting out going to follow this to add Thread\Matter support follow the Smart Home Scene post How To Enable Thread And Matter Support On Sonoff ZBDongle-E. I’m using zigbee2mqtt and having the same issue, it’s pretty much always the same ones, I put it into permit join mode, and hold the little button until it blinks 3 times, and usually it hooks back up. But, it used to show it dropping and reconnecting, popping up in green, if logs were in debug mode but that doesn’t seem to happen now, but still pairs so I guess I don’t care. Any clue on how to repair the zigbee2mqtt kind? Did you link the new home assistant dongle? Didn’t see that one.

Hey - great video! 😊 I recently migrated from Philips Hue Bridge to Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 Dongle Plus E and since then my (very old) LivingColors Iris stopped working reliably. It works kind of well as long as it‘s like in the same room as the coordinator, but as soon as I move it out of the room, it stops working. What bothers me about this is that it was flawlessly working with the Hue Bridge but with the Sonoff coordinator and z2m, the lamp has become basically useless for me. As you suggested, I have many routers in the room in which I want to operate the lamp (like 6 different ones), but it still doesn’t work. When I have it close to the coordinator, I see it only opens 3 connections: 1 to the coordinator and to two other routers. I assume it only has 3 connections because the lamp is quite old. But again, as it worked with the Hue Bridge, I think (hope) it will be possible to get the lamp running with my new setup. Any advice what I could try to fix it is appreciated.

@@macfrag574 After many days of frustration, I setup the Hue Bridge in parallel which now coordinates all my Philips Hue bulbs/lamps and Friends of Hue switches. The Sonoff coordinates things like plugs, sensors, etc. My intention of getting the Sonoff was to get rid of the proprietary Hue bridge, but I had too many issues with the Sonoff alone. The non-working lamp was just one relatively minor issue. Far more severe was the issue of bulbs becoming unavailable very frequently, which I did not yet experience by the time I made that initial comment here. With my new setup, everything works flawlessly.

Good troubleshooting. I had a aeotec v3 smartthings hub for 3 weeks. Every night my wifi, thread and zigbee devices went offline and stayed that way for 2 to 3 hrs. I switched to hubitat and now everything stays online but the beautiful things is my wiz wifi bulbs are now run locally. I just add them and block them from the internet in my eero router app. I had bought Eve matter motion sensor because I'm a newbie and thought that it would be best to get where smart devices are going now vs getting them later. However because of the hub switch, they don't work with hubitat because it doesn't support thread devices. Luckily my eero router does, so I managed to still make use of them by connecting them in Alexa. Here is the kicker that I just had to share but maybe you guys already know this. So Alexa can't execute conditional actions that aren't time based*** But it can, at least for my purpose. The eve devices needed to do basic functions, which is turn on/off the bathroom lights. It could become a presence sensor if I could say only turn them off if the door contact sensor is open. So I messed around as I waited on my flight and found that alexa can disable routines using custom actions. Voila, that's all I needed to control my bathroom lighting. Now it knows when I'm taking a sh** vs just quickly washing my hands. I just have the contact sensor disable the motion sensor lights off routine when the door closes then reenable them when it opens. I created a routine that I use verbally that will keep the lights on when I'm shaving and have the door open. I can easily stick this into a button and click it instead of using voice triggers. This problem can easily be solved by just changing the motion sensors but those sh**s were $50 a piece. I'm never buying anything directly from Apple again (only 14 days return period vs 30 from Amazon)...dang it

@@makeitworktech Thank you very much for your reply/question. I am having a hard time finding the right component(s) for a proof of concept hobby project. In terms of functionality, it could be compared to ESLs (Electronic Shelf Labels) which are communicate via a Zigbee stack. I know of some custom firmware for some brands, and even though the progress there is impressive, the communication between devices and a "server" does not seem to be bi-directional. I'm desperately looking for a combination of a "easily programmable" MCU / chip that can communicate with an e-paper display and a zigbee module, and still have room for a few buttons (and/or an NFC reader).

Maybe you're aware, that between routers, the red lines are OK, since they have much better routes... Also, I'm an user of Z2M from the beginning (I mean, when I started zigbee networks) and looked up ZHA since then, but for me, it looks ZHA cannot do as much with a device, than Z2M can do.. maybe I misunderstood something, but that was my finding, so definetly try it out, since when you reconnect everyting 3 times, the 4th is "whatever" :D Also like to point you out about the 2,4GHz. You can find images on the internet, where you see the WiFi and Zigbee channels overlapping. Try to design your network in a way, that WiFi using Channel 1 for example, and Zigbee using 25, or Wifi using 11, and Zigbee also using 11 (those are different frequencies)... Also if your Wifi on Channel 6, you can safely use Channel 11, 24, 25 and 26 on Zigbee. And of course, if possible, use only one hub, and forget Bluetooth (and any 2,4GHz transmitter) around it, if possible :)

I blame the coordinators for failing to work around any brand non compliance. Home Assistant or smart things for the most part are the best. Many brands, Hubitat, would blame aqara or ikea for not following standards, but if a hub knows how a brand deviates and doesn't work around it, shame on them. IKEA shortcut buttons work great with HA, or IKEA's own hubs, most other controllers will burn through batteries trying to monitor the button.

Great video! Thanks! I have a setup which looks eerily similar to yours. The Nortek coordinator, a cluster of sonoff zigbee plugs that act as routers and a bunch of aqara zigbee end devices. I have the same issue that you described: even when I connect end devices through a router, they seem to have a mind of their own. In total, I have around 40 zigbee devices (including the coordinator, router and end devices). What is odd is that the zigbee visualization shows several devices that seem to have no connections to either the coordinator or a router. But they still are connected to the network. Not sure if you've seen something like that. It'll be helpful to understand what this means. Also, some of my zigbee devices are hit or miss. They work around 80% of the time and despite being all local, seem to take some time to respond. For example, there is a definite delay in how quickly the motion sensors trigger. It'll be great to get some tips on how to improve performance and reliability. This is especially true for a couple of Aqara Opple switches that I got. They can't ever remain connected even if I put them right next to the coordinator or a router.
@makeitworktech
@makeitworktech 9 ай бұрын
Thanks! I do have the same thing sometimes where the device does not appear connected, but if you zoom in it doesn't say it's unavailable. I think that's an issue with the ZigBee visualization, but not necessarily true that it is not connected. One thing you could check for is 2.4 GHz interference. It's something I didn't cover because it wasn't really ready to address it, but you can change the channel that you're zigbee network uses, because it often overlaps your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi channel, which can cause interference and slow or unresponsive devices
@plumbunion
@plumbunion 9 ай бұрын
@@makeitworktech Correct. It is indeed just the visualization. I was wondering how your visualization was near perfect :) and how you didn't suffer from the same issue. It'll be nice to know for sure that there is a Wi-Fi interference issue before I change the channel (I am on the default channel 15 right now), especially because it is listed as an experimental feature and I wasn't quite ready to re-add devices from scratch if the migration didn't work. Your video did inspire me to buy the SONOFF zigbee stick (something that I'd been putting off for a while). I'll keep you all posted on how that goes. So I'll have to re-add devices now anyway :) Is there a channel number other than 15 I should try?
