Hoody Brown here, telling every writer wanting to self-publish to watch Wynter's video on formatting novels for KDP. It is excellent and should be tabbed to view again and again. I recommend writers take notes for future projects. I just self-published my second book, "Dead Spoken Here," and it was only because of Wynter's video that I was able to navigate what would have been an Amazonesque feat! Thank you, Wynter, for helping me get both of my books out (Dead is Romantic and Dead Spoken Here).

Yes. Agreed. She actually sat down and went through a step-by-step process. Had people say Word is the hardest, others said "Just use a template on Word". Meanwhile I haven't seen any templates for a book on Word yet. Everyone "talks about" how to format but never a sit-down.

The irony is I've been looking around in different word programs but kept going back to Work yet didn't like it because of the monthly or yearly service. Christmas came around and was asked what I wanted for Christmas, a year subscription for Word. I get it and come across how to format in Word. Jackpot!

I think some good advice would be, at the end of you book, print out a few pages with the same text but with different font sizes and perhaps margins, and label them so that when you get your proof copy, you can really compare the sizes and then choose what you want!

Firstly, I have to say thank you! Your video has been a hair saver as I was pulling it out before discovering you. Secondly, your help on styles and formatting gave me the hint I needed. I have found out how to format the chapters so that you don't have to enter on each one. You adjust the formatting in paragraph for the chapter's style. I have mine set at 102pt before spacing and 18pt after spacing. This allows you to have the dropped chapter heading every time without having to do it manually. I hope this helps and thank you again. Best wishes, Hannah

WONDERFULL!! Your voice exudes tranquility and patience. Even though you may or may not be in that state of mind….Smile I needed information on page numbering - yes!. But I also needed information on how to add glyphs, headers and footers. You did not cover this. But because of your “calm, soothing” voice, I just listened. Please take care of your God given instrument-which is your voice. We need more video presenters like you. Some have tried to imitate what you naturally have. They “come off” as either condescending, or downright LOUD, RUDE, and OBNOXIOUS. Then they have the nerve to say, “And don’t forget to “click on” the like button and subscribe to my channel.” Truly, this makes me laugh out loud; and I want to ask them, “Are you kidding me?” But again, you stay safe, be blessed, and “keep on posting these great videos.” P.S. gargle with some old-fashioned baking soda, peroxide, or Dr. Tichenor’s MouthWash. Either one is guaranteed to cure what’s “ailing ya.” NMA

Hiya! I'm new to KDP and watched your video after formatting a book just to compare. I like how you explain things! You mentioned not having unlocked the secret to creating a style that automatically creates the spaces for your chapter headings. I just did this for the book I formatted and would like to share it with you: 1. Right click on the chapter style you use. (so in the case of this vid, "TitleText") click Modify. A Modify Styles dialogue box will pop up. 2. At the lower left corner of the dialog box, click on Format > Paragraph. A Paragraph dialog box will pop up 3. Go to 'Spacing' and enter any value in the Before and After fields. This will create the space automatically without you having to press enter every time. You can adjust the spacing depending on how much... space you want. For the spacings you did in your vid, I think you could try Before: 120pt and After: 60pt. You can freely adjust the spacing here after, and all the text that you've selected to be in this style will be changed accordingly; no need to do it for each one every time you change it. :) Hope this helps!

Aloha Wynter! I can't tell you how much I appreciated your video!. Some folks would love to charge me $1,000 and up to format my book, suggesting that formatting is really only for those who have many years of experience. That may be true, but I do know a lot of Word, but am a bit under-educated in the areas that you speak about. I was able to go in and re-format etc. and I think it looks pretty darn good. Showing how to Save to PDF and publish, etc. was another piece that you explained clearly. I'm looking forward to seeing a few more! Thanks again. Much success to you in the future.

Most of the time was spent wrestling with numbering, so I feel you on your disdain for it. This has to be exactly what hell feels like! My favorite line from the video though? In the "Exporting to PDF" section you say, "You can watch these videos. I think it's annoying to watch videos." Could there be a better wrap up near the end of a 52 minute video tutorial? Thankfully, I didn't find YOUR video boring! It was very helpful. Thank you!

I figured out how to start each chapter halfway through. 1) After each chapter ends, insert a page (Go to Layout, go to breaks, page.) 2) That will put the beginning test of next chapter on a new page. 3) Set the heading style to spacing you want. (Home tab, style corner popup, create new style, format, paragraph, and then you can change the before and after spacing of the chapter title.) 4) when you highlight the section header you then select that header style and it will automatically format to that style and spacing. :) Took me a bit to figure it out, but it works. Hope that helps! :D

I'm told that when Amazon allows a prospective buyer to do a preview, it includes the table of contents page. This may be a good reason to include chapter names along with the chapter numbers in a table of contents. It gives the reader another enticement to purchase the book.

In the bottom right-hand corner of certain sections of the ribbon (ie, Clipboard, Font, Paragraph, and Styles when you're in the Home tab) there is a little half-box symbol with an arrow pointing out of it--clicking on this should bring up the popouts, which are just more detailed windows of these features. Great video! Thank you for explaining this whole thing with page numbers!! Do you recommend for the inside margins of a 300-500 pg book to be .9"? I'm trying to figure this out... I thought that KDP recommended .625" for the gutter (which I thought was the entire inside margin), I didn't think that you needed to add their outside margins recommendation to their gutter recommendation to make the inside margin?
@WynterCannatelli
@WynterCannatelli Жыл бұрын
Yes! The gutter plus the margin equals the inside space; so if you have let's say, .5 margin, you would need a .4 gutter to equal .9. In my experience, it's always better to have a larger gutter/inner margin than a more narrow one, so be generous!

Hi! I watched your video and had one quick question for editing! I’ve followed all your instructions but I’m not sure if I missed this: how many spaces down should your chapter headings be and should you use a specific font for headings (like the same one as your title cover font) or use the same font as your chapter text? Thank you, ma’am!
@WynterCannatelli
@WynterCannatelli 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! That's totally up to you. The most common way of spacing chapter headings is about halfway down the page, but there's no "rule" that says you have to do it that way! As for the chapter heading fonts, I like to use the book title font, but again that's completely up to you. Good luck!

So, I"m coming back to this because I have what may very well be a very dumb question. When you say "page count" do you mean actual page count or sheet count? Because three hundred pages would equate to 150 sheets of paper. So if we are formatting for 300 pages doesn't that mess with things? Or am I over thinking it?
@WynterCannatelli

Would you say that a size twelve text would be good for a book thats 5" by 8"
@WynterCannatelli

I think it depends on the font and how many words per line and lines per page that would put it. I counted a lot of words and lines in other books to get a feel for what I wanted, so it's definitely a personal preference!

I was thinking of buying a laptop to be able to use Microsoft word because it would make things so much easier. Is there a certain laptop or computer anyone would recommend? Thanks

I don't have a computer I only have a tablet what do you think I should use to type up and edit my book so I can turn it into a PDF. Like is there a certain website or app you recommended. I'm stumped. Plz help thanks

You could use Google Docs, which is free and an online app. It does have some limitations as far as editing goes, though!

I don't know if you'd know the answer to this, but whenever I try to submit it to kdp the comment pane is showing up from this editing service I used years ago. Is there a way to take that comment pane out completely, without having to retype my entire 458 novel from scratch? Every time I hit control a, to copy it I guess it continues to copy the pane as well. Which is a pain in my ass : D

Hey Erin! I'm afraid I don't know a lot about the comment pane in terms of permanently closing it. The only thing I can think of is to delete each comment or trying to copy and paste the manuscript into a new document before formatting. Sorry I can't be more of a help!

@@WynterCannatelli No worries, I found another site that said to go up to Review I think and then next to track changes there's an option to have "No markups" and that takes the pane out. In case anyone else has issues at some point. Thank you so much for replying though. You have no idea how much your advice saved me. I spend like $80 to get formatting done. Now I can put it toward author copies. Seriously can't thank you enough!

Dunno...shouldn't chapters begin on the next recto? (odd page) If so, then you'd go to Section Break > Odd Page, right?
@WynterCannatelli
@WynterCannatelli 3 жыл бұрын
That's more traditional, for sure. Personally, I don't care where chapters start. For my novella Scum, I made sure my parts (there were 3) started on odd pages because I liked the look. Ultimately, though, there's no strict rule

@@WynterCannatelli Yeah...this is a yuge learning curve for me...My local library is my second home. I've been looking at books to get tips on typography, layout, and formatting. I have yet to see a chapter begin on verso but I'm sure I'll find one......

Setting up your book so your chapters start on odd pages is much easier than the method you're using. Use Section Break Odd page, not Section Break Even Page and Section Break Next Page, or adding Page Breaks to start your chapters on odd pages. Section Break Odd Page starts all of your chapters on odd pages automatically, regardless of any changes that you make to your manuscript. For anyone watching...learn how to use styles. Global changes in one click...not hunting and clicking.
