Always amazed by how much effort you put into ‘designing’ your content Matt! Great combo between solid advice and aesthetics! And the last 2 minutes at the end of the video is very inspiring!

Random question but, do you have to ask the firm for permission if you can record in the office like that? (the clips in this video at the office)

I adore your films, and the in-depth conversations that conclude each one. It has given me a great deal of understanding within the field of finance and consultanting. I'm pursuing a master's degree in system engineering, and my coursework and consulting clearly relate to one other. Yourvideos have given me the movitiation to continue working and improve my skills.

Premium content again from you! This is clearly one my favorite channels, every video is a learning opportunity. Kindly asking if you can talk about some negotiation tactics you used?
@matthuang21
@matthuang21 Ай бұрын
Thanks Lysania! For negotiating I simply spoke to the recruiter saying that I felt I brought a lot to the table and ideally would have liked to see a higher comp package. I leveraged having strong expertise from my IB and Consulting experience and also emphasized what I was leaving on the table at BCG (namely a promotion if I stayed). Hope this helps!

I have a couple questions about your job hunting process: - At what point were you ready to leave BCG/ when did you start looking for new opportunities? - Did you apply/ interview at other companies? Did you get other offers? - Were you open to relocating? - Did you ever see yourself becoming a MD/ Partner at BCG or did you always intend to leave at some point?

You are quick with the videos. I needed this info too. Thanks Matt....also, how soon after the assessment did you get called by the recruiter? Were the other rounds of interview based on your original case or were new ones asked?
@matthuang21
@matthuang21 Ай бұрын
Recruiter reached out a week or 2 after completing the hiring assessment. The other rounds of interviews were not based on the original case, I think anything is fair game

Hey Matt, great video! Just curious, what do you think of your fifth application, like what makes it different compared to the first few attempts that helped landing on the first round of interviews?
@matthuang21
@matthuang21 Ай бұрын
Hi Janice! Although I can't say for certain why my application was selected the fifth time, with each application I made sure to update my resume and tailor it to the specific role I was applying to (S&O roles for different teams at Google). Other than that, I think I also got a bit lucky the 5th time around, since there are so many applicants. Hope this helps!

Hey Matt curious on whether you participated in an on cycle recruiting for PE as a BCG associate ? Also curious if u were headhunted any roles but ultimately turned them down for Google? Would be cool to have visibility into what the headhunter MBB exits look like, if you’re comfortable sharing !
@matthuang21
@matthuang21 Ай бұрын
Hey great question! I've done a ton of PE interviews through headhunters (both on and off cycle) and have received an offer to join a NYC-based PE firm in the past which I turned down. If you know how to work with headhunters you do get looks from many top funds (e.g. Bain Capital, Berkshire Partners, Advent, Elliott Management, etc). Although the pay and prestige is enticing, in the end I realized I wasn't excited by the prospect of PE and pivoted my recruiting efforts. As much as I love finance / business, the process driven nature of M&A/PE investing simply does not excite me and ultimately I don't see myself doing deals/having my schedule dictated by work for the rest of my life.

Do you have any tips on how to best approach the negotiation part of the offer?
@matthuang21
@matthuang21 Ай бұрын
Ideally have a competing offer that you can leverage. But if you don't, make a case for why you are overqualified or a high quality candidate for the role (e.g., maybe you have an additional year of experience than what the job description asks for). Also have a range in mind for what you want but ask for the highest end of the range - worst they can say is no. I'll prob make a vid on this in the future.

Statistically, the hardest part of this whole process is getting past the application. Less than 1-2% of applicants get selected to interview. The truth is: 1. You need to be the ideal candidate/ have a good resume - relevant experience at a top company. 2. Timing of your application - because of the sheer demand to work at Google, every new job opening gets enough interest from high-quality applicants within the first 2 weeks. Recruiters will then select the best candidates from that pool. The best role for you will not be available all year round. You should be constantly checking for new openings
