Hey, sir I am an average Indian student, not from any elite institution, having profile like 88/85/89 in 10th and 12th and graduation, preparing for the cat from last 2years ,(basically 2years of gap) and a non- tech background, sir with all these I always dreamt of getting into consulting, is it any way possible sir?
@matthuang21Күн бұрын
You don't need to have a technical background for strategy consulting, but you might need to get into a top MBA program so that you can improve your recruiting chances for consulting firms.

I like the framework a lot but it seems not centric to the case (that goes against the idea of actually giving you a case here) e.g. it has to be a new market if the case already is saying that the product aim to capture the (new) trend away high sugar/calories drinks. These assumptions showcase business acumen and common sense, which the interviewer would like to assess too. I would focus more on competition, then start to elaborate what factor you will consider, like who's already in the market, any reference from other countries with similar product, if other peers are also working on this category, what can we differentiate, eg taste, region, distribution channels, etc. After all, we all know soft drinks industry is very very competitive.

This video is so perfect Matt! I often find the biggest fear people have in case interviews is making the wrong estimate. But your walkthrough broke it down so well, where your evaluation is judged more so on the reasonable assumptions/possible past learnings through which you developed the estimates, rather than the actual value. A piece of information is discrete (like a stat, or population number), but a problem-solving framework is re-creatable, and displays your ability of getting to that discrete information, and utilizing it correctly. So more so analysis focused than a general knowledge test.

This one hit hard for me. I feel the same way… I think you should start making more content like this as you figure out what it is you really want to do in life. There is a large audience for that type of content, so it could help you grow the channel much faster as opposed to making niche content for management consultants and investment bankers. I am thinking about doing the same with my content. And although you are only 25 and still don’t have it figured out. Your advice is extremely valuable to people like me who are 23 or younger.
@matthuang212 күн бұрын
Hey Austin! Glad you related to this one - it was from the heart. I wholeheartedly agree that there is a large audience out there for this kind of content. I'm still balancing high value niche content vs more mainstream videos that appeal to a larger audience - there are lots of pros / cons for making each type of video. For instance I've noticed that niche videos tend to have a higher sub to view ratio and a higher CPM per video, whereas more wider topics appeal to a much wider audience and get more views but have lower sub:view ratio and lower CPM. That said, I will definitely be coming out with more philosophical / reflective content in the future - stay tuned!

Hey Matt, kudos for the great content. You did a good jobs explaining the intricacies and rationale of the case study. Regarding the actions that would get the company the market share of 12,5%, would the listing of "competitive pricing" be correct though? The assumption of the 12,5% had the profit margin baked in already.
@matthuang212 күн бұрын
Hey Xenofon, great Q! You are correct that the 12.5% market share had a profit of $2/bottle baked in already, and so we know the 12.5% market share is what is needed to break even IF profit margin stays constant. An observant interviewer (or a smart person like yourself) may have pointed this out, and so as an interviewee I would respond by saying that if we lowered our prices we would either need to (1) figure out a way to also lower our unit costs so we could maintain our $2/bottle profit margin, or (2) recalculate a new market share % needed to breakeven, which would be higher than 12.5% if we lowered price. It quickly becomes a game of pros / cons. Price cutting is one of the fastest methods to quickly capture share (look up "loss leader pricing"), and so it's still a valid option to think about - that said, if management's goal is to preserve profitability at all costs, then it makes sense to prioritize the other ideas (e.g., sales / marketing campaigns) first.

Good video. Given your assessment of the strategy consulting trajectory, do you think that it is still worth it trying to enter strategy consulting given the surge in AI-related transformation projects where most F500 and large corporates are going to be focused on for the foreseeable future? Do you see 'strategy consulting' becoming less strategic and more transformational in nature (e.g. Big 4 type MC)
@matthuang2123 сағат бұрын
Excellent Q. While there's definitely a bigger focus now on AI transformation projects and all the big consulting firms are participating in this trend, I personally think there will always be a place for the "strategic" side of consulting. At the end of the day strategy is all about decision making and making trade offs, and companies still need to make decisions about AI that are "strategic" in nature (e.g., "how should we use AI and in which part of our business? How should we weigh the risks and benefits of implementing AI into our company?"). Once they've decided how to best use AI in their business, then the transformational piece comes into play. Strategy and implementation/transformation projects are kind of dependent on each other in a way. Without the right strategy, implementation goes wrong or leads to a bad result. But without implementation/transformation, a strategy is just an idea and nothing more.

@ChickBilly3 күн бұрын
No they don’t make money doing this. The make money spending 10-12 hours a day doing desk research on databases, public sources, primary interviews with field experts, interviews with client’s teams from C-level to operations, on site visit to understand how they work, lots of hours of competitive intelligence, and finally a shit ton of hours doing ppt slides, and sometimes extremely complex Excel models that as you can expect require shit ton of time. Than wrap up everything and prepare to present to the C-level of the client, and be destroyed on each single assumption and data point, during a 2-3 hour meeting. Usually this all thing is done while they work on multiple projects at the same time, sleep deprived, and eating terrible food at the desk.
