Im Cary King of Ackanthuria. I breed Varanus acanthutus. Currently I have 4 Ackies currently. My original breeding pair and two holdbacks. Looks like you did a good job. I have my Ackies as tame as they get. Which is pretty tame. Mine will crawl up my pants leg and nap in my underwear. No kidding you cant make this stuff up. Ackies are great because they average 20 inches, and can be kept in a 100 gal tank. I had never kept Monitors before I got my first Ackie. I have however kept all kinds of other reptiles including venomous. Monitors were a real learning process. They are in a class all their own, and after 4 years Im still learning new things. I have heard that Savannah Monitors eat allot of insects even as adults. Ackies for sure eat lots of roaches, locusts, and crickets. They are little hunters however and smaller lizards are their flavorite prey. They will however eat most anything they can overpower and swallow. My guys while eating other lizards readilly will not eat mice or pinkies. They will however eat guppies out of their water dish. The main problem people have with Savannah monitors is they dont have a big enough cage/aquarium. Also they cant furnish the proper diet. Houdini seems to be in great health, and his size is good to. Let me guess. You named him Houdini because of his uncanny ability to escape. I call my Male Ackie

My Ackies name is Bitlo because he bit me pretty good a couple times as a subadult. Anyway great job youve done with Houdini. I wish you would have explained exactly how and what you feed her. Ackies eat lots of insects and because of their very high metabolism. are always moving, running, climbing.

She looks great! They definitely can go long amounts of time w.o eating, but my monitor doesn't like not being fed also! You can look at the base of her tail where the fat is stored they can go over 8 months with out eating if the female tail is about 3 inches around at its base. They will slim down but thats ok. Nice video! glad to see someone else have a healthy monitor!

I am confused Do they come in different morph or what ?? I have seen Savannah on Clint's channel which is light in colour almost a creamy colour ??
@LadyReptile
@LadyReptile 3 жыл бұрын
I think you might be thinking of Tegus? Those come in a variety of morphs. Savannah monitors are commonly just wild type.

If you're still wondering. This species has no morphs yet. The colour depends on the animal (albino or normal) but depends mostly on temperature. It'll be light colored when warm enough. Dark skin colours means the monitor is cold (except for albinos)

I am watching this as I am driving home 300km with my savannah monitor. She is banging her head against the Styrofoam lid of the box I am transporting her in (don't worry it has air holes) let's hope she doesn't dig through the towel and the box she is 60cm and not tame at all. Previous owner made no attempt to tame her down over 8 years so I got a lot of work infront of me

@@LadyReptile update: I lifted her out of her crate and she didn't even bite or hiss at me. Very odd considering the owner told me quote "oh she's not scared of you. If you get in there *points at the terrarium* she's just going to come up and bite you" so far that doesn't seem to be the case. My theory is because all he ever did was clean her water and feed her she associates humans with food and nothing more and when she is still cold she is not interested in eating and therefore doesn't bite🤔
