Another tricky cool install! Clients requested a very specific layout in their master bath. After a bunch discussion on every detail, this is how we install a super cool whole wall shower niche.
The Mosaic sure made things a little bit more tricky! I had to be super exact to make it look perfecto. Enjoy the video!!

These video's are so helpful for the DIY'er like me.. It's the setting out/planning part which makes or breaks it and without experience you can get into a rabbit hole that you can't get out of haha..

Great job on the mosaics in the wall-to-wall niche. I wanted to provide you a *Big Tip on How to Make the Side Mosaics EASIER* for you next time. You can set the mosaics *FLAT as a BOARD by setting the mosaics ON A TABLETOP* so that your mosaics will be super flat without any waves. You will need a backer that is thin but strong enough to take the mosaics. You can do this not on a long backer but divide it up into 3 sections. These 3 sections will be flat and already have the mosaics on them. You just have to install the 3 pieces like a large format tile to the wall using thinset. All you have to do additional is to take into account the extra thickness of the backer and the extra layer of thinset. You can do this during framing stage. Regards.

Wow! You answered so many of my questions. I am planning a shower install for this spring/summer and I could not get a full grasp of how to locate the full width niche in my wall (I am building the wall from scratch). I have been on the fence over the shower base, going back and forth. I was hoping to save some money building the base myself but after seeing how much easier it is with your tile redi base I am leaning closer to dropping the $1200 (custom size) to have it done right. I do still have a bit of concern in that I plan to have a second niche below the full width niche in order to recess a seat that my wife requested. I plan to use 12x24 tiles like you did. Not sure if I will use the metal tile edge because I want natural stone tile so I can just round over and polish the corner transitions. I really appreciate you making this video. I imagine I will be referring back to it as I get closer to construction/completion.

Awesome content! I like the way you explain why and how in your layout. Thank you!! I really learned a lot. However, I have a couple of issues. 1. There are no links to the supplies - parts and tools your used. 2. Cost and time breakdown of the project. If you could include those details in your presentation that would be awesome.
@TodayIWorkOn
@TodayIWorkOn Жыл бұрын
I never want to tell someone how to install a project, I just like to show how I install my projects. Everyone has differing opinions on what to use, so I tend to shy away from breaking down what I use. Some think cement board and red guard are barbaric, lol. Although, I do have other videos that break down a few aspects of my bath projects and what I use. It's very hard to cram in so much into a video without bloating it. Cost is also relative on what materials you are using and where you are working in the country. I happen to live in one of the most expensive areas in the country and the labor rates here are really inflated because the attention to detail is high and cost of living is really really high. My clients purchase the material, so I really don't look at the pricing since I'm installing it. Time is relative to your experience. A DIY'er can take 4x the time it would take me to do this project. A lot of videos that give timelines tend to be skewed since every situation is different. No project is the same even if you would be building a wall to wall niche. If someone asks specifically what they need from the video, I'm more than happy to provide them an answer. I think in this video I did link the Moasic tile to someone. Thanks for the kind words! If you browse my channel, I'm sure you can get the answers you need! If you need anything specific from this video, I can try to answer.

Would it be the same approach to creating this niche if you are using Tile Redi boards instead of cement boards? Tile Redi uses a different sealant, so I'm not sure if that is the best way to waterproof the corners and angles joints.
@TodayIWorkOn
@TodayIWorkOn 2 ай бұрын
I’m not sure the tile redi boards can achieve something like this. I would stick to a regular substrate like cement board/hardie/go board/ etc. I’m not even sure how you would be able to cut those boards for an application like this.

So did u pitch the bottom pc of the cement board of the niche?
@TodayIWorkOn
@TodayIWorkOn 6 ай бұрын
Yes, if you watch the video you can see I carefully notch the mosaics on each side with about 1/8” of a pitch from the back to the front. The pitch is there. You always need a pitch from the back to the front. Usually I do a 3/16” pitch but that would have been a little too much for the design side on this install. Every 1/16” counted on this niche. It was so hard to do, but I was thankful we nailed it.

Nice shower; but, not load bearing? What about the weight of those 12x24s, the thinset mortar, and the cement backer board basically front-loaded on those now weakened 2x's? I would've put a small 2x6 header in just to be safe. It probably would've been easier-- and safer-- that way as well rather than sawing and planing those 2x's to get a desirable flat surface.
@TodayIWorkOn
@TodayIWorkOn 2 ай бұрын
A load on a wall is usually tens of thousands of pounds. The tile on that wall is MAYBE 200 pounds tops. 1 drywall screw can hold 200 pounds just to give you a perspective in load. That niche will be there for decades if nobody rips it out.
@calibrobear
@calibrobear 2 ай бұрын
@@TodayIWorkOn Code in most areas for notching 2x4s is 25% or 7/8 of an inch max-- and not for a 12" notch either? You took out at least 70%? Would you hang a pull-up bar at the front of those notched 2x4s and hang from it indefinitely? I wouldn't. It looks good though.
@TodayIWorkOn
@TodayIWorkOn 2 ай бұрын
@@calibrobearif it’s load bearing. You are confusing load bearing with non load bearing. This wall is not holding anything above it, it’s just the wall. Huge difference.
@calibrobear
@calibrobear 2 ай бұрын
@@TodayIWorkOn not confused at all-- what you've done is created an unsupported "vertical dead load" of 200-300 lbs 2 1/2 inches out in front of basically a 2x2. If you're in an area that incurs seismic activity-- those will snap like toothpicks.

Good video, if you're using redguard. That tells me that you're not going to a professional flooring store.ardex sells a product S1K which is way better than red guard, also, I've never seen drywall tape used inside a shower although I guess you could, but why wouldn't you just do it all with the alkaline resistant. Concrete board tape . also when you back butter. People always miss the corners, which is one of the most important parts lay the tile down upside down and get yourself a second trowel or a 12 by 4 finishing trowel. .....And you forgot to key in the substrate on everything. Great video!

Oh, I’ve used it all, think I first installed ditra mat back in 2002. I’m old 🤣. Red guard never failed me and honestly, I secretly love the smell 🙃. Btw, all great pieces of advice. I bet your work is way better than mine. In 90% of my videos I never tell someone how to install it, I just show them how I install it. 👍 Cheers!

@@BonBon770 so you don't trust the cement board, the tape and thin set in the corners, the redguard, then 3/8 inch of thin set mortar and tile to provide enough waterproofing?

@BonBon770 5 ай бұрын
@ncmtb4677 Thin set has nothing to do with waterproofing. He used the wrong tape. And he did not key in the substrate.... Also a 1/2 inch trowel is usually what is used on that size tile. The tape he used is wrong because it's not alkali. Resistant concrete Board tape.
