Wonderful advice THANK YOU. Love your music too! Find we can keep bananas 1-2 weeks in the bottom of the frig, separated and wrapped in 2 air tight plastic bags each, then all in 2 large airtight bags, even though they are near a tray of apples. Will never have to bake banana cakes again to use up over ripe bananas!! Bless you!!

Thanks! I have mobility problems and can't get out to shop every day so this is really useful for me. I hate waste. You are right about the plastic bags , totally reuse-able so no waste there either. I know some people have said it takes time to do but, really, it's a couple of minutes that's all. Thanks for sharing that , really helpful. Btw, I agree with other people about your lovely hands. Mine resemble a bunch of bananas! lol

Works great. I used plastic wrap rather than bags. Now I can buy bananas by the bunch and not worry about having to eat them quickly before they go bad. Thank you.

One CAN "pretty much" stop at one "in passing" during their daily commute, as so NOT to make a "special trip" ... Just an "ounce" of planning uses minor amounts of effort !!

I tried this and it works. I’m unable to go shopping often, so this is helpful. Mine stay good for beyond 5 days as i keep them the bag closer to the freezer section. I re-use plastic bags. Doesn’t take time as each banana needn’t be soo cling wrapped. Just wrap each nicely in a plastic bag and then put all wrapped ones in a single bag. Works well for me so i like this video. I learnt something new.

Thanks for the video. One little hint for peeling the bananas... gently pinch the bottom of the banana and it will split easily and peel right down. Much easier than peeling from the top. =)

THANK YOU ! THANK YOU ! I just ate a week-old banana that tasted as it did the day I bought the bunch. This is life-changing knowledge for me. I live with a man who will not eat his ceral without a banana and in Phoenix heat I had to trek to the store every 3rd day. Also I hate mushy bananas and I had given up on eating them myself. had tried the other ideas like wrapping the tips and freezing and banana bread with the overripe ones. Cannot thank you enough for this posting. Now have a new tast thrill--a perfect banana sliced lengthwise and spread with nut butter. ELECTRA

This does work ,as I purchased 4 bananas on 18th December 2021 and 5 days later they were still hard today on the 23rd December. I used Plastic Bread Bags as I reuse them, for lots of other stuff, and then wrap into another carrier bag

Thank you very much for sharing this Technic. For me is fantastic because I grow bananas in my garden organically and most of the time I end-up freezing them for backing banana bread, muffins or cookies and lately I am replacing the sugar on the recipes for bananas particularly for the gluten free.The very ripe bananas (almost rotten) are ideal for malnourished children or elder people as well as convalescents.

Great idea, we usually keep a bunch out for eating and put a greener bunches in the fridge. Knowing from your video to separate the bananas will hopefully improve their freshness span. Have you tested the difference in the freezer between separating them in the fridge fruit compartment and wrapping them up, and the degree of wrapping because I opine it necessitates seemingly a lot of unwrapping for the 3(?) layers to view them, whereas individually wrapping in 3 clear, small bags each - such as one gets in a fruit shop, would allow instant checking to be aware of their levels of ripeness. Our precinct is at sufficiant distance, that buying bunches of green bananas is more worthwhile. Thanks for posting the video, regards, Joe.

Putting fruit in the refrigerator only slows down the ripening process. The banana on the left is unripe not fresh! The banana on the right is just past the point of perfect ripeness. Eat bananas when the brown spots start to appear. They have very little starch left in them. I find it amazing that our saliva has just the right amount of the enzyme amylase to break down this little bit of starch that the fruit hasn't converted into glycogen and fructose which is our true food. Its almost as if something planned it that way? If it is unripe and firm it is still loaded with starch and the breakdown happens in the intestines where gas is produced. This gas can produce wind storms that cause your friends and family to flee the premises. That's the good side of it because if it breaks down further up your belly the pain can feel like a heart attack. I would recommend putting your bananas in the refrigerator at the first sign of the brown spots, either with or without a bag (the skin turns black but the inside is just fine). They are perfect to eat at this time and being in the refrigerator will allow them to stay in this state for the longest amount of time ~7 days.

TCC - You'll be happy to know that I naturally knew and did this. I always liked bananas when they had half brown skins and were softer to eat. I never liked them hard with all yellow skin. It was in my adulthood that I read somewhere that bananas are not fully ripe until the brown spots show. I just always liked them with half brown skin.

I've always had a hard time eating banana's once they start turning brown. It just tastes disgusting to me. I like them best if they have just this tinsy bit of green on the peal. Not to much though, that tastes horrible again. Anyway, in stead of looking at the color as an absolute value for what is good for you, I think we should just listen to our bodies for what is good. It tells us quite well what it needs and what it is capable of digesting. (except for sugars of course, that's proven to have an effect on the body similar to cocaine)

Well demonstrated! However, allow me to share a different point of view. Banana is a cooling fruit, once digested, it can make the 'cold body' to generate more cold and therefore transfer it into mucus and dampness. For those who always have cold feet and hands, please wait until the refrigerated banana ' warm-up ' .

We use bananas in our daily smoothies. When the bananas start looking sad, we simply peal and slice them into chunks. We then place the chunks on a cookie sheet, which we place in the freezer for a few hours. When the chunks are frozen, we store them in a zip lock bag and leave in the freezer until needed. We also do this for other fruits, such as peaches and raspberries. We never throw out over-ripe fruit anymore. Our smoothies are delicious!

I use the same method as Sandra Primm to peel so much easier. Wish I had known that method years ago when I had my kids but at least now with 10 grandkids it makes it easier. Thanks for video!

Some of these comments are classic. I watched this video because I was in the middle of vacuum sealing bananas. But wasn’t sure if I should toss them into the refrigerator after sealing them ( with peels on). Thanks for the video, learned a few things. For those who ask I’ve had major bariatric surgery and I cannot consume a lot of food at one time and I fly in and out of town quite often.

(this is in reply to so many of the comments here) Okay, okay - who doesn't know bananas are healthier when they have spots, but some people live in areas where they have quite a drive to the nearest market and so this is great advice for those who don't go or can't get there every other day. Thank You RINGO! I think it's a great tip!

I had noticed when I pulled a sticker off a banana, it would be bright yellow but dark and spotted around it. So I decided to try wrapping each banana separately. Now I know it works. Thanks for showing the beginning to end results.

I buy a large bunch,leave a couple in the fruit bowl(I eat one every morning) and put the rest in the fridge (top shelf).I don't split them,don't wrap them,and they last a week to 10days.I haven't binned an over ripe banana for years.

I have a video on my playlist by a nice woman who says just wrap the stem only and the results are the same. The only difference is the starch turns to natural fruit sugar without the trouble of having all these plastic bags.🤗

Organic bananas especially turn brown much faster. The brown spots on the bananas are better for you I was told/read, they have more nutritious benefits. Personally I prefer them slightly browned! Thank you for the great info!!!

I'm concerned about how the (extended) refrigeration affects the taste and texture of the bananas. I appreciate that this technique may be (will be) helpful at times, and with other foods as well. For me, what works better (for bananas) is to buy bananas in a variety of ripeness to begin with. For example, I'll try to buy 3 bananas that are very vary green, 3 more that are medium green with streaks or blotches of yellow, and then 3 more that are mostly yellow, with streaks of green, and finally, 2 more that are fully yellow and ready (or very near) to eat. Then, I just store them out at room temperature. That way, for the next 7 to 10 days, I can have a banana (or sometimes 2 depending size) each day, at the perfect (or nearly so) ripeness. I prefer them fully yellow, just when they start to show tiny brown dots. When the brown dots get bigger and the banana is softer and sweeter, I don't enjoy it as much but I'll usually still eat them this way. When the dots get big enough that the dots start to touch each other (or even very nearly touch), it's too ripe for me, too soft/sweet for my liking. Of course, because of what might be available at the time, it doesn't always work out exactly (perfectly) that way. And there are also times when I might skip a day or so and some of the older bananas will get overripe, to ripe (for me) for eating out of hand, but still OK for other uses.

Did not work in my refrigerator. Many years ago, banana industry said to never put them in refrigerator. Now I know why. But I believed RINGO and now regret it.

Don't throw out overripe bananas. Mash them and wrap them tightly in cling film. Freeze, then keep for use in cakes, banana bread and smoothies - fabulous!

I leave my bananas on the counter until they reach the point of ripeness that I like to eat them at. When they reach that point, I put the ones I don't plan to use that day into the refrigerator WITHOUT any covering. Putting them into a plastic bag is totally unnecessary. They will be good to eat and at the same stage of ripeness for another 6 - 7 days. The outside/skin may turn slightly brown, but the banana is still good. I have preserved bananas from becoming over ripe in this manner for many years. Works every time.

When they're ripe they taste great, when they're unripe then they don't - like with all fruit if you have ripened fruit next to unripened fruit the latter ripens quickly. However you want to eat these things rather than just store them in the fridge. They are nice when they're cool but, I've waited until the skins are almost black before eating from the fridge as they really are tasty.

I'm absolutely amazed that the refrigerated banana's didn't turn immediately brown/black! I didn't know that wrapping them up would make that big of a difference. My (unwrapped) banana's always turned brown/black, so I'd use them in banana bread because their texture was a little too mushy to enjoy plain. But your bananas texture stayed perfect! I rarely buy more than one or two at a time because I can't eat them that fast enough (unless I buy them for a recipe), so thank you! I'm so excited to try this! :) (Btw, you have really pretty hands. No, I'm not a weirdo - I just notice weird stuff. ha! Not a lot of people have pretty hands - maybe nails, but not hands. :) Also off topic, my brother lives in Honolulu!)

According to the “One Pot Chef”, all you do is to apply some saran wrap around the stems and secure it with some tape.

The difference between conventional and organic bananas is remarkable. For one thing you can use the peel of an organic banana. Yes, you read that right! I put them peels and all in my smoothies and in a pudding made with banana, avocado, coconut oil and cocoa and carob powder. Add some vanilla and/or mint and...Delish! (Variation: put in some peanut or almond butter for this no-sugar healthful treat.). P.S. bananas freeze well but of course peel them before slicing and freezing. ;-)

You should never eat a banana if the stem is still green. The spots it you know its rip and yummy sweet...as well as easy to digest.

They're actually ripe when they're brown spotted. It's healthier to eat them at that stage.

Firmer Bananas are better for people that get loose bowels. But this video is still helpful to all those who like it sweeter/riper. You can store any extra bananas in the fridge, whilst having a couple of bananas ripening outside the fridge.

Had on Dr. Oz the other day that if you eat bananas while they're green the fiber in them is lest digestible, so you actually absorb less calories. Personally I just like them better green. Man, they are nasty when they go all soft and mushy. Yuk.

Without having to read through over two years of comments, hopefully others have suggested peeling your banana's from the end opposite the stem, because that way is much easier to peel a banana. Hey, those ripe banana's are great for making banana bread!

Depending on the time of year and what your room temp is. I simply put the in my wine chiller @ about 57 f. They keep very fresh.

Tips from my Grandmother in 1950: Placing a banana with under-ripe tomatoes for a couple of days will help ripen tomatoes bringing out the natural flavour, also works with unripened fruit especially stone fruit. Four day old for custards and five-six day old bananas are perfect for smoothies and making banana bread and cakes reducing need for added sugar.

In the winter, I put bananas wrapped in a plastic bag and leave in the garage, where its cold. Works the same way as in the video, and you don't waste your refrig space. Eat less ripened bananas for less sugar content, if you have high blood sugar.

I prefer to eat my bananas with brown spots because it tastes so much sweeter and the texture is softer . . . it is like eating a dessert. The firm unripe ones, to me, are quite flavorless. Using ripened bananas in smoothies, and my smoothies are so much sweeter. However, this trick is good to know as now I can control the time it takes to ripen my bananas for my timely consumption when I buy a whole bunch of them.

Guys, these aren't white truffles. If they start going too ripe, just spend the dollar fifty to buy some more. Way too much work and bags needed for the task at hand.

I have heard that as long as you wrap the stem tightly with a plastic wrap or bag (I use the tape the store puts around them), that they will not spoil as fast. Of course mine do not stay on the table long enough because they get eaten. I've had them this way for about a week and they are fine.

Having been born in the tropics where there are different varieties of bananas, I can't understand why someone would eat an unripe banana like most Americans prefer. The nearest to a banana ripened on the banana plant is one with brown spots on it. You might keep bananas longer as proposed here but once taken out of the refrigerator, a banana should be allowed to ripen before being eaten (I.e., with brown spots). To me a firm white banana with a green tip is unpalatable and tasteless.

Over-ripe bananas used to get tossed - until finding out a neighbor could use them for baking banana bread/cake. So, she got the 'unused' bananas - but, I got no bread or cake since I don't like bananas that way. oh well. Oh, banana splits are great - if you like ice cream and all that fruit, chocolate, whipped cream is on hand.

I think bananas with some brown spots on the peeling and a soft texture are more flavorful than bananas that are perfectly yellow and firm. It's like they are not completely ripe.

It is amazing how many people eat bananas when they are still yellow. They are still fairly firm and not very sweet. It is true that they taste best when the skin goes brown. They are softer and so much sweeter! I even buy green bananas and keep them until they reach this condition.

I like ripe bananas without any trace of green left, so the half- brown skin is what I wait for. And after that, I let the rest of them get really brown and fragrant. Just right for making banana bread!

I put my bananas in the freezer without the skin . Take three banas out when frozen, cut into smaller pieces, whizz in food processor with kiwi fruit to make banana cream. Like icecream. Serve with melted dark sugar free chocolate or and Tamarillo whipped. When melting chocolate add some virgin olive oil about 1 table spoon. Makes the chocolate smoother. Poor over frozen banana cream. The chocolate turns hard like a chocolate coated ice cream at the cinemas.

But bananas with brown spotting is ripe and better for you. Yellow bananas are not ripe yet and are harder to digest, and do not contain the same amount of nutrients that brown spotted bananas have. Keep that in mind. If they get super brown, throw them in the freezer and use them for smoothies or banana bread.

If, bananas are too ripe with spots on them...all I do is burp them back for hours. Even 1 bite will do it. I prefer my bananas firmer and have never had a problem with them, as suggested by Charley Crowe.
