Just for fun I used the ditto for this new loop track (amzn.to/2S3bS7y) instead of my usual VL3.
The end result is at 8:39 if you want to skip ahead and just see what I came up with for the track.... buuuut if you do of course you'll be missing the point of what this video is about (which is totally fine though haha).
Oh, and I'm only recording my guitar at any stage, not any vocals just FYI.
Anyway - I hope this helps you create awesome loops and have fun thinking of some new ways and ideas to add to your live shows and loop tracks!

Great stuff! Pretty much the process I go through to learn a new song. Just have to add in the thinking about how - or IF - looping would work for it. I hear a lot of songs on the radio lately that I'm trying to keep a list going of which ones I think would work well for looping. Been perusing all your videos and it's a great education on looping. Please keep 'em coming! Side note: It's always amusing when people talk with a kiwi or British or Australian or any other English accent but then kick into singing with a mostly American accent. hahaha

yeah fully! Somethings are crazy challenging - just got asked to loop Bohemian Rhapsody haha! Glad you're enjoying the videos too mate! ...I LOVE that you posted this btw - I always get asked where I am from!! Singing wise I'm mostly listening to foreign artists, and I think that flows through to my accent sometimes even though speaking it's still much more 'kiwi' than when I sing!

Thanks David. I am a newbie at looping and I definitely enjoyed the process. David Shanhun hey man. Gotta say it’s great. Setting up templates with a lower recording volume is important. The on board bass effect is average but you have that covered. I’m going to set up the fix switch as mic record off so I choose when to loop vocals or not. If that doesn’t do what I think it does then I’ll get a mic splitter (talk box) so I can go direct to the mic pre or choose to loop the vocal. My issue with buying one now is it must be at the end of its product life cycle and I’m sure there will be a better version at NAMM 2020 but ah well... in short it’s great for what we do man. Love your work dude.

@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Haha is your OC3 hiding in a cupboard getting dusty somewhere atm? 🤔
@eekamoose
@eekamoose 5 жыл бұрын
@@davidshanhun Thanks for the reply. Not stuck in a cupboard, but I hardly use it. I would use it much more if I could get it to sound cleaner. At the moment it often sounds dirty and distorted unless I turn down the treble on my Takamine's onboard pre-amp. If I do that I can play bass lines on the lower strings but don't get an acceptable guitar sound on the other strings. My guess is that the OC-3 is very sensitive to the quality of the input signal and piezo pickups don't give a clean signal (compare a piezo pickup to putting a mike in front of the guitar and you can easily hear the slightly harsh metallic sound from the piezo). Your OC-3 sounds fine on that Bruno Mars number while you are playing all six strings. I assume that you set yours to POLY. What are your other settings? Keep the videos coming, it's all good stuff!
@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 5 жыл бұрын
@@eekamoose hmmm that's interesting that you get a distorted sound from the pickup :( might be a silly question, but have you tried having a lower overall volume on your guitar that's going into the oc3? Just in case somehow your guitar is genuinely sending too much signal for it? just a thought although I'm sure you've tried this most likely! Yes - set to Poly, I go through all my specific settings for the OC3 in this video if you haven't seen it - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pNt4e9V2qbyqY2Q.html. Maybe that will help you get a better sound from it or some ideas to try. I find with anything that does bass it can be quite fiddly to get sounding good, and even with the octave I use from the VL3, I have to be SUPER clean to get a nice sound from it or it just ends up really odd (and not pleasant haha). Be curious to know if you get a good sound from the OC3 by being really really careful to play just one note (and muting all other strings). If you can get a good sound doing that from one note, it might help your problem solving journey with the issues you mentioned about the piezo pickup etc. Sorry if it sounds like a silly thing to try (or that you already have), that's just my go to option to kind of troubleshoot stuff like this as it makes it easier to hear exactly what's going on with the Octave doubling process!
@eekamoose
@eekamoose 5 жыл бұрын
@@davidshanhun Thanks very much for the long reply, David! Your idea that the signal from the guitar might be too hot gave me a new idea. I know that my OC3 tracks much more cleanly when I turn down the treble on my Takamine's pre-amp -- I've always assumed that backing off the treble gives the OC3 a smoother waveform which is easier to process. I'm going to try turning down the treble a little on my pre-amp upstream of the OC3 and boosting treble downstream of the OC3. I'll do some experimenting and tweaking and post back here if I find settings that give me an improvement. By the way, which model Takamine do you use in these videos, and which pre-amp do you have sitting in it? Is it a TK40 pre-amp? Your Takamine/OC3 setup sounds really sweet in your videos. I'm pretty confident that I can get my nice Japanese Takamine PTU508 to sound as good, I just need to find the sweet spot!
@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 5 жыл бұрын
Nice! Hope the tweaking and experimenting is going well :) My Takamine is an old ND 15c, with the AD1 preamp/pickup. Don't think they're particularly around anymore, but I'm sure with tweaking you can get a nice sound that you like from your gear! :)

I am just getting into looping and your videos are so helpful. You rock David! I already have the Ditto 4x and now looking for an octave pedal. I see that you are using the OC-3 in this vid. Do you recommend it or prefer another octave pedal? I would appreciate your perspective.

I really like the OC-3 for it's option to have bass and guitar at the same time - with only the bass strings doubling as the octave (you set the range on the pedal). As a stand alone octave pedal, it's pretty good, although there are a lot of options that I haven't tried... The POG's are rated really highly in general although I haven't owned one myself - could be another option though - amzn.to/3awg0nS

David Shanhun I was toying with the idea of getting one but I read up so many guys having unusual problems with them. So I opted for a RC 30 as I have the VL3 also and my main looper for work is the RC 300. So I needed a looper for home as I leave my gear locked up in London at the gig as I play six times a week. But I really like the look of the X4. Idea the stop button act as an all stop or do you have to hit it twice.

Interesting to hear! Ive only had great reports about the ditto (but obviously not the vl3 haha!). Makes sense to have a looper at home as well mate, great to have things set up ti just jump in and practise with. Im veery glad for the stop all button with one tap/hit. Makes things super simple. I would actually prefer though the instead of the 4th button being fx, that it was a ‘start all’ button! Buuuut i’ll keep hoping for a new version with all the bits i want in it eh?!

David Shanhun yea so true. I always have never understood why so many loopers lack the all start and stop button. And why so many loopers just keep coming out as single track. Your videos are always so unique - you’re going to get a lot of subscribers. I’m good at picking the ones who’ll make it! Stay consistent and you’ll be at 100K before you know it. I’ve seen you use an iPad for lyrics when live like in this video. What app do you use? Keep showing looper techniques. VL3 uses will lead to more unique content and probably some sponsorship. Just stay consistent (1 video per week, preferably on the same day of the week).

Man thanks for this comment Jeffrey! Appreciate it. I actually use the ultimate guitar tab app for lyrics. Sometimes it has heaps of odd chords, but i’ve usually learnt the chords already and just like how easy it is to scroll with that app plus change the speed or size of text. Not all tunes have the full lyrics though which is a downside sometimes...

I have Ultimate Guitar’s app(s) too - they’re great. What I’m searching for is an app that scrolls the lyrics for live use. They have their Autoscroll mode but it’s never the right speed and it can’t jump back and forth for the chorus, etc. Hey - just saw your touring announcement. Congratulations! Consider me a fan rooting for you!
@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 5 жыл бұрын
Yes that's true - they won't jump back and forth for chorus parts etc, so sometimes can be better to find one with the wrong chords etc or that's unpopular, where the person has written out all the words/choruses/repeats in full and in order. You can change the scrolling speed, and font size if that helps. Other than that I did use On Song for a while, but that was quite a long time ago. Maybe something you're familiar with already or could look at if not? Thanks for the tour support! Been a LONG time since I hit the road and I'm really looking forward to it. Will be some video's from there as well Im sure :)

In my previous life (I'm retired now), I was an app developer. I sometimes think of writing an app now that listens to what you're playing to find the beat and then scrolls based on the real timing of measures of lyrics along with understanding the structure of the song to move back and forth for the chorus, DS al coda, etc.

that'd be an awesome app! There's voice recognition software that should easily enough be able to keep up with what you're singing eh?

Hi David, thanks heaps for the videos. In the first loop, how do you get the base line without having to record a separate loop? I have a VL3X. Thanks.
@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Karl - if you watch at 1:45 or so in the video - you can see my right hand picking the bass note of each chord with my thumb while I play the main riff with my fingers. That's all just the acoustic guitar sound, no effects or anything for the first loop. Hope that helps!

Hi, I notice you are using the X4, how do you compare the X4 and the Voicelive? I am interested as I've been using the X4 for about a week now and feel I'm getting to grips with it but there are some things I'm not completely happy about.
@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 5 жыл бұрын
biggest thing I miss using the x4 versus the VL3 is that 'start all' button that you can map with the VL3 to start loops A+B at once. Otherwise from the looping side I'm happy as with the x4. I don't use many of it's fx options unfortunately - what I would want for fx really isn't there haha!

Hi Utsav! It's a tough decision haha! What do you want your loop pedal to do - how many channels and inputs do you need? There's a lot of options! I think the Voicelive 3 is still a really good option, but yes... it can have a lot of issues still! Let me know what you are needing and i'll suggest what I think might work. Mostly though - do a bunch of reading and research online too!

I love your videos. I have a question. Well 2 actually. Do you have it set to record a certain number of bars? And do you use quantisation? Thanks 👍
@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Joel, thanks man! With both the ditto and the voicelive 3 you dont need to set any bars ever - it picks up what you’re doing and syncs the next loop with it. Occasionally if i’m really out with start/stop timing of a second loop it gets only half of it as a loop, but that can easily just be rerecorded. Very different system to the boss loopers. Is that what you have? And no, no quantisation - tried that with a friends boss and it was horrible haha!
@davidshanhun
@davidshanhun 5 жыл бұрын
I should say the reason quantisation was horrible for me was - it took half a second for it's quantisation 'brain' to work, so it meant if you recorded your loop and played it straight away, it would never start perfectly in time as it had to do it's half a second of thinking first. If you recorded the loop and stopped it, and then started it, it gave it time to figure out it's quantisation and then was fine - just didn't work for me for live shows! hope that explains it better!

@@davidshanhun Hey, yeah that's super helpful! I'm actually very new to looping. I've been learning how to get setup with Ableton. So I'm using Ableton with its built in looper and a soft step 2. It's great fun, I was just struggling with the use of quantisation and whether to set the bars or not. With Ableton I can have X amount of bars with one looper and set it with others. I'm not so sure I can make the other loopers match the length of my first one. Your videos have really been helping me understand how to loop though! Especially this one. I did wonder whether people worked out what they would do with each part of the song before they do it.
