How I Load and Transport my Large Kayak Without a Roof Rack

Awhile back I talked about my Brooklyn Kayak Company PK11 fishing kayak. In today's video, I'm going to demonstrate how I load this kayak onto my vehicle and safely transport it. I don't have a roof rack or trailer, but I'm very confident with my method for securing this heavy kayak to my vehicle. Using a couple store-bought products, and making a couple minor modifications, I have driven this kayak hundreds of miles at freeway speeds with absolutely no problem.

That thing about twists in the straps... That's brilliant and so true. I came so close to leaving a mattress on the side of the road when I heard that disturbing sound while transporting it.

Ha! Yea it sounded and felt like my truck was tearing itself apart the first time I experienced that. All from a dumb vibrating nylon strap.

I have a Rav4 with a bare roof. I was thinking of just buying one of those 2inch thick exercise pads on Amazon and loading my Hobie on that and using ratchet straps as you did. Im worried that the pad may not be thick enough to displace the weight though. I don't want to end up denting the roof!

Should the kayak be positioned upside down? Would that help with big wind?

I think if the seat was easier to remove, I might do it that way. But the little knobs to unscrew the seat are pretty tight and small, and not worth the trouble in my opinion. That being the case, it can't really lay upside down when the seat is in place.

Light kayak - no cap - no rack. I have a 100+lb yak with a cap. Not gonna work for me. Still looking for solutions.

Hitch extender if you have a short box pickup. Harbor freight one works well

Bed hitch extender at harbor freight works great. My kayak hangs out 6ft and is safely secured to the hitch extender

Why not just toss it in the bed with the tailgate down and stick a red flag on the back?

It's a pretty big/heavy kayak, and like half of it would be hanging off the back of my short bed. It's not especially practical or safe, plus I wouldn't really be able to use the bed for anything else.

@@GreatLakesPrepping umm use the truck bed for what its made for. makes no sense to put on the roof when you have a truck bed. Buy a bed extender and save your back, and from tearing up the rear of your roof. Work smarter not harder.

@@moblack5883 As I've mentioned, I don't like to sacrifice use of the entire bed just to put the kayak in it. And with a truck bed extender long enough for it to fit, I'd still have over 5 feet of kayak hanging out the back. There's no part of that I'm comfortable with when traveling on the freeway for hundreds of miles. The roof system works well for me, and the roof is not getting torn up (the kayak is only ever touching the pads, including when I first heave it up there).
