Today I will show you the process of making a very small micrometer. A micrometer is an accurate measuring device that is often used in metalworking. Enjoy watching!

I got a set of Mitutoyo digital calipers at my local goodwill outlet (all items 99 cents or buy by the pound) battery life sucks since they are an old set, but I took them to work and checked them against our calibration samples (which are "calibrated" every year) and they were spot on and highly repeatable ... not bad for a buck
@Bakafish
@Bakafish Жыл бұрын
Poor battery life is a symptom of a Chinese clone, not an older unit. The accuracy may be good, but as it doesn't use an 'absolute' capacitive encoder it needs to use the battery all the time to maintain the position. Even old Mitutoyo's batteries last for years.
@howardosborne8647
@howardosborne8647 Жыл бұрын
The modern Mitutoyo Mics and calipers have exceptional battery life expectancy. The battery in the Quantumike seen in the video lasts over 2 years before needing replacement. Another useful thing to know is if your caliper uses a small LR/SR44 sized button cell then buy the silver oxide type as they last far better than the chemistry in the standard LR44 type.

This goes in the Hall of Fame of Machining. Stunning, delicate work. Things at a smaller scale are hundreds of times more sensitive to tolerances. Great job.

This is impressive work. I think this kind of work should have its own competition for how small you could make stuff. I found the threading part particular interesting, like how does one do that at *THAT* small scale and have it fit snug, yeah that is impressive.

I may be wrong but I think the tungsten stock he used was already surfaced on each end. You can just orient cut pieces so they have these ends facing each other. They used a solid piece to make sure the holes were perfectly in line while brazing, this should theoretically mean the faces will line up perfectly when they are set. What a great watch though, precision measurement tools have always fascinated me.

I don't know if I'm getting it wrong, but by the end of the video there is a checking with a 2mm rod and a blade, and it seems to me that the rod was spot on on 2mm on both tools, but the blade was off? To me it looked like the blade was measuring .8 or .9 mm on the micro tool, is this correct? Great video in any case!

Zero is laser etched where ever you want it on the body, then the matching 0(10ths of a 1000ths) on the barrel has to be marked when the barrel is in the fully closed position. The thread pitch, circumference of the barrel, etc all determine the graduations of the markings you can fit on there. Hope this helps.

@@josilhus in industrial micrometer the pin Is threaded on the barrel and you can (releasing a knob at the end) rotate the barrel to match the zero. So you can engrave barrels as you want and match zero point during the final assembling (and readjust if needed during years of use)
