Poor battery life is a symptom of a Chinese clone, not an older unit. The accuracy may be good, but as it doesn't use an 'absolute' capacitive encoder it needs to use the battery all the time to maintain the position. Even old Mitutoyo's batteries last for years.

The modern Mitutoyo Mics and calipers have exceptional battery life expectancy. The battery in the Quantumike seen in the video lasts over 2 years before needing replacement. Another useful thing to know is if your caliper uses a small LR/SR44 sized button cell then buy the silver oxide type as they last far better than the chemistry in the standard LR44 type.

I may be wrong but I think the tungsten stock he used was already surfaced on each end. You can just orient cut pieces so they have these ends facing each other. They used a solid piece to make sure the holes were perfectly in line while brazing, this should theoretically mean the faces will line up perfectly when they are set. What a great watch though, precision measurement tools have always fascinated me.

Zero is laser etched where ever you want it on the body, then the matching 0(10ths of a 1000ths) on the barrel has to be marked when the barrel is in the fully closed position. The thread pitch, circumference of the barrel, etc all determine the graduations of the markings you can fit on there. Hope this helps.

​@@josilhus in industrial micrometer the pin Is threaded on the barrel and you can (releasing a knob at the end) rotate the barrel to match the zero. So you can engrave barrels as you want and match zero point during the final assembling (and readjust if needed during years of use)

He set the zero by bringing the dial to zero, then bringing the smaller anvil to it and locking it in place with the screw.
