I will never use a cheese grater again. No more skinned knuckles. I started making our own soap and laundry soap a few years ago. Our family has sensitive skin and eczema. Almost every detergent and soap break us out. Every since I started our skin has healed and no more steroid creams. Sold our soaps at our first Farmers market on Saturday and I met 10 people with sensitive skin. I was so happy to help people like us. We sure know how it feels to suffer. Thanks for all the tips.

@@unclejonssoap I'm also curious to know what you think of using castile soap in place of a zote type product. Castile is not a big seller for me, and it would be nice to repurpose it if I can. Any thoughts appreciated!
@unclejonssoap

I use Castile exclusively. We make the soap ourselves and use half on the shelf for sale and half for our laundry soap. It doesn't lather a lot but that's a good thing for most modern washers. We also use about half the amount of bar soap that most recipes call for.

Hey Uncle Jon, I have a suggestion to improve your Laundry Soap product: Adding about 4-5g of Sodium Citrate per dose of your Laundry Soap powder will improve how it works, particularly in areas with hard water and/or no water softening. Sodium Citrate is a chelant which is commonly used in soap making, particularly in the more commercial end of cleaning products as a chelating agent. (EDTA is often used instead of it because EDTA is more effective but it's also pretty bad for the environment whereas Sodium Citrate is much, much safer and more biodegradable.) In fact Sodium Citrate gets used in its food safe form for molecular gastronomy and commercial food applications (it's just a product of the reaction from combining Citric Acid and a Sodium base such as baking soda or Sodium Hydroxide.) By adding a chelating agent like Sodium Citrate to your laundry powder you will inhibit the formation of soap scum which allows the soap to do its work properly and it will reduce/prevent the buildup of soap scum in the fabric that you wash (this is also better for the long-term with your washing machine and plumbing too.) I think that this would be something to consider as a major value-add to your product at a _reasonable_ cost. You might also consider offering a fabric softener liquid that is safe for microfiber fabrics which is a combination of a strong Citric Acid solution and a similar amount of Sodium Citrate per dose as described above. For environmental reasons/to reduce the cost of shipping you might consider a line of products which are a highly concentrated solution which the customer can dilute at home as per instructions. You might need to get some Uncle Jon-branded fabric softener containers if you decided to go down this route ;) With all that said, I sure hope that you read the comments on your channel!

I absolutely love your channel! You do an amazing job of building up your viewers and giving them confidence instead of scaring them into submission. Thank you! I do have some questions: How caustic is the washing soda? Should someone wear gloves and a mask and such when working with it? Is it possible to convert baking soda to washing soda just by baking it? Can you use scented soap instead of adding scents to the laundry soap batch?
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jennifer! So.. Let me take one at a time here. Washing soda really isn't that caustic to the skin. But, it can be an irritant so gloves wouldn't hurt but if you're just putting from the box and not sticking your hands in it should be ok. However, it can be dusty making the laundry powder so a first mask should suffice. I've never tried too do the conversion in the oven so I can't really tell you if it's true or if it can be done at home... Sorry. You can use scented soap in your laundry powder for sure. I just happen to like the even distribution of the scent in the powder. Also, the scent will be very mild in the finished product if you use some scented soap because you're not really adding that much soap to the batch. Hope this helps some 😁
@Jennhas
@Jennhas 6 жыл бұрын
Uncle Jon's thank you! That was an amazingly fast response! I’m going to try the conversion because baking soda is all I have on hand right now. I was buying it in a big box in the laundry isle and was mistakenly lead to believe it was the same as washing soda. Oops. I’ll let you know how it turns out. Since the chemical composition between the two is similar adding heat and losing water should make the change. FYI, I got the info (The difference between baking soda and washing soda is water and carbon dioxide. Seriously. Baking soda’s chemical makeup is NaHCO3 (1 sodium, 1 hydrogen, 1 carbon, and 3 oxygen molecules). Washing soda’s chemical makeup is Na2CO3 (2 sodium, 1 carbon, and 3 oxygen molecules). When baking soda is heated up to high temperatures, it breaks down to become washing soda, water steam, and carbon dioxide.) from Nature’s Nurture (naturesnurtureblog.com/how-to-make-washing-soda/). I didn’t think there was a difference between the two, as I said I thought the only difference was the packaging. Now I know, and I’m guessing I can also get my carpets cleaner now. 😄 Thank you for your help!

It's usually by weight. The fragrance supplier should give you an amount to use in percentages. So maybe 3-5% of the total batch weight I'm soap. I cut that number to 1/4 of that amount. That's the concentration I use for laundry powder. So, if the batch weighs a pound, I would calculate the percentage of one pound and cut that number to 25% for the fragrance. Hope that makes sense.

I think it's just what everyone had always done. The recipes are very similar. I started using less and less too test it out and 1/2 tsp works great in HE machines for a normal load. Like I said in the video, you can use a 50/50 blend of borax and washing soda (sodium carbonate). For the bar soap component, it really depends on how big the soap is. But, I generally only use about 1/4 of a bar per pound of powder. So, a 2 pound batch of laundry soap would use 1/2 a bar of soap very finely ground.

I know this is an older video, but maybe you can help me a bit - first off love your videos, I am curious as to what size the bag is you are packaging in (will 2lbs of laundry powder fit in a 1lb tin tie bag?), and you say you need less soap then you think, my recipe has 1.7oz of soap in 1lb of finished laundry powder, is this too much? I also do add baking soda to mine as well as the washing soda and borax. It works better for me that way.

2 lbs of laundry powder works great in a 1 lb bag. I would cut that soap amount in half. Less chance for build up in the clothes and the washer. But still enough to do the job as long as it's grated enough.

Hi Jon! I love your videos. I saw that you only use 1/2 tsp for an he washer. How much would work for a non-he washer? Also, Love that you blend it and don't have to spend half a day at a grater!
@Uncle_Jon

Actually, I recommend starting with 1/4 teaspoon to start with a HE machine now. For a standard washer I recommend starting with half teaspoon. Then adjust as needed. That system has served us well. Hope that helps!

@@Uncle_Jon hi Jon. I'm so sorry to bother you again. You said it's a low bubbly soap for this. If I do 100% coconut oil soap at 0%sf, would that be too bubbly? Or should I add salt, or just do one with hardly any bubbles to begin with? Thank you again. I hope I'm not bothering you too much.
@Uncle_Jon

@@samanthadavis6309 a 100% coconut oil soap should be ok as long as you experiment with the amount you use in your recipe. It'll probably be less of this soap than my recipe. On the other hand, people use fells naptha for their laundry and it lathers more than any handmade soap I've ever seen... lol

Hey Jon do you think they could be using the baking soda for a whitening agent? Just wondered because a lot of people use it for teeth whitening and skin whitening exfoliate.
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 6 жыл бұрын
They could be. But it doesn't seem to do much in the laundry for some reason. Yours be better off with an oxygenated bleach prefer like oxyclean or something.

What could I use instead of borax? We cannot buy it here in Germany as it is banned? You mentioned baking soda which is contained in many recipes here. Does it not work? I would really like to try your method!
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 5 жыл бұрын
You would really need the borax. Baking soda just isn't strong enough. Is it banned or just sold under a different name? Boron is the mineral itself.

I researched the difference between washing powder and baking soda. Not much difference. One hydrogen molecule only. Since some add powders like oxiclean which is basically dried hydrogen peroxide I don't see much need to purchase the more expensive washing powder. If I felt I absolutely needed washing powder I'd just bake baking soda. That will turn baking soda into washing powder.
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 5 жыл бұрын
Good deal! While it's true that baking the baking soda will make washing soda, it's too time consuming for people like me who do this for a living...lol. Also, the price difference (depending on volume purchased) isn't too terrible at all considering how long this laundry powder lasts.
