How I Make My Own Pigs' Feed ~ video # 20

This is how I make my own animal feeds (for pigs/hogs), this is not scientifically analyzed but it works for my pigs. They are cheap from local farmers’ co-op in my area.
Not every area has their farmers’ co-op but you may check your local farmers’ supplies. It is better to make your own feeds if you are raising just a few animals at a time or you’re raising only for food.
I decided to make my own to save some money. In our farmers co-op where I live, I bought 200 pounds of cracked corn, 40lbs of millet, 100lbs of wheat and just 50lbs of 24% animal feeds. Altogether, it cost me $49.50. Total of 390lbs of feeds for less than $50.00, and the amount per pounds is less than $0.13 (cents) a pound, huge savings than buying premix feeds.
I learn this trough trial and error and some may say this is not enough or have enough nutrients for your animals, but anything that works, I just do it. I have my piglets now for more than two weeks and I can see they are gaining weight now.

If you ferment your feed you can also cut cost even further. 3 parts water to 1 part feed. The grain will swell and create good probiotics and your pigs will require much less. Just a thought.

The 16% is that just livestock feed? Also have you considered adding a supplement?
@tmtx7
@tmtx7 6 ай бұрын
When you're making it, it depends on what your animal needs. I usually add half pound of molasses for goats and sheep. For pigs, I didn't add any supplement. Commercial hog feeds are mostly 12~14% protein only, so I think 16% is sufficient for the pigs without any added supplement.

Ok that is a good video,you have the vision but you are half way of saving money in food,first you need plastic buckets or drums where you can put all those feeds like that at the time of mixing will be easier for you to mix it,if you have land start planting your own corn and beans,you not only will use the corn and beans if not that you will use the plants also,you will not waste nothing,you will need a shaffer machine to reduce the beans and corn plants like grains,any grass that the pigs like to eat you will cut it with the shaffer and you will add some ripe bananas or coconut for add some flavor then put all in one small pelletizer machine and make your own pellets and save it in plastics containers for storage!!

Very very interesting video. I'm curious: do you add any water to your pigs feed at mealtime or do you feed it to them dry? I've seen it done both wet and dry and I'm just wondering what the benefit is either way - or if it makes a difference?
@tmtx7
@tmtx7 5 жыл бұрын
I soak the feeds at least overnight to ferment them. There's benefits of that; one, it becomes easier to the pigs to digest them, two, it serves as probiotic and aid them to combat minor diseases. Or better yet, but not claiming it, some people said the pigs has more antibodies so they didn't have any health issues. The feeds when they it dry, most of the time they waste some of the feeds since pigs nodge them and when it spill from the manger most of the time they don't eat it anymore. So I conclude that it's better to wet/soak them with plenty of water and when fermented before feeding them, they like it better. Thanks for watching my videos.

But anyways, all of these grains are from my local farm supply (I live in the USA) and here you can buy it in almost all farm supply. The problem in the Philippines is, it's really hard to find those grains (if there is one that sells them). Millet, I think you can find it, it called BATAD of SORGHUM, wheat I doubt you can buy it there. Sorry for that but there is nothing wrong to ask from the feed stores or farm supply store.

Thanks for the information. Just wondering if you have any experience with fish feeds formulation too?
@tmtx7
@tmtx7 5 жыл бұрын
If you have access to fish, this should be dried. Moreover, you should take out the soy beans and replace it with dried fish (any fish is good). Supply the hogs with more water since the fish tend to be salty and they need more water in their system/guts. This will help them to gain more weight and leaner unlike the corn and soybeans they gain weight but the fat is more than than muscles. This is what my father did when we have an access to dried fish. Thanks for watching my videos.

@tmtx7
@tmtx7 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching my video. Depending on where you live, the grains you need are corn, millet (or milo, or sorghum), wheat grains and soy beans. Four basic grains but give most of the nutrients they need to grow and gain weight. Corn is the base of the feeds you're trying to make. It is 40 pounds or if you are using kilos, same measurements. I live in the USA and we are using pounds as weight measurement. So I will give the weight in pounds and just do it in kilos as the same number. Corn; 40 pounds, Milo, Wheat (grains) and Soy Beans are 10 pounds each per batch. Mix them together and the feeds are ready to give to your pigs. As they grow, you have to add more corn for heavier body weight. That is on the eight week old. Make the corn 50 pounds and the same weight/quantity for the other grains. until they are ready for selling/butchering. Hope this will help you.

Hope you can get these ingredients since base on your ;location there is different grains you can substitute in each but the corn can not be substituted since if you substitute it it will be more expensive. I remember when I'm still young from my father's farm, he use to do that. What I remember is the pigs are slow growing but the are very lean, very little fat, and that time instead of butchering them within xis to nine months, he butcher them a year old or more since they are slow growing but the meat is more delicious than feeding with the grains ans most of he time, the feed that you can buy nowadays have hormone added. But good luck and enjoy the better meat. Thanks for watching my video.

Yes, I'm from the Philippines, living here in the United States for 30years. My father when I’m growing up raised pigs and chickens to supplement our income. It help me to develop these ideas of making hog and chicken feeds, now that I live here in the US everything I need to make the feeds better is here, I can get all the grains and mineral for the best animal feeds my animal need. Try to check my other video for chicken feed, here is the link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/adlgoc2IzKi5oKs.html. in this video I even put the protein content of each grain I use to get the right daily protein the chicken needs, this chicken feed is good from one day old chick up to the time they lay egg. Unfortunately, I have no idea if you can get the grains it need to make the feeds there in the Philippines. The hog feeds, you’re right this feed I made is good to feed to hogs from after weaning to market size/weight. When I sold my hogs they weigh 200lbs (a little shy of 100kg) after less than five months. Thanks for watching my video.

So you're still using 1/6th of the feed I'm not sure how that feed works out on price and performance. Let's say you're making 50lbs of feed that's 25# of corn then 8# of wheat millet and 24% commercial hogfeed (yest that adds to 49#, but whole numbers make the math easier. So the corn is $2.50. I can't imagine that you were getting the wheat and millet for less than $7 at the time so that's $1.12 each for $4.74 and the $18 commercial feed (though I suspect this more concentrated feed costs more) so that comes to $2.88 or a total of $7.62 for 49#. But looking at protein cracked corn is generally 6%, 12% for millet and wheat and 24% for commercial concentrate that's 1.5# from corn .96# from millet and wheat, and 1.92# from commercial feed or a total of 5.22#/49 or 10.6% protein. That protein missing from their diets. isn't going to help them grow more quickly.

Kung ang alaga mong baboy ay ilan lang, ang the best ay tulad ng ginawa ko sa video. Walang timbang (three is to one), three part corn, one part wheat, one part sorghum. Kung marami kang baboy at talagang piggery and alaga mo, dapat specific weight, it's a bit complicated but worth the labor (if you can find the ingredients there in our country). There exact weights are: 50lbs (or kilos) cracked corn, 14.4lbs soybean meal, 1.6lbs swine base mix, 10lbs whole grain wheat, 10lbs whole grain sorghum (or batad in tagalog where I live in Nueva Ecija before, we call it batad). Mix them all together and soak in water twice it's volume, feed it after overnight soaking and you'll see how fast you pigs will grow. Base on what I'm doing, the pigs weight after only 110days at the butcher shop, they weigh 275lbs or 125kilos each. Good luck finding the ingredients.

Thanks for watching my video. Good for you and me, :) a lot of people that have small animals rely on the animal feed suppliers. Which in some aspect they still make money (if they are selling their animals), though if they make their own with a little labor of their own, they can make it a lot cheaper and more money on their pocket. And if they intend their animals for self consumption it’s better since they can save money in the long run.

it depends on how big/old your pigs are. but first month they eat at least one pound a day, on the second month they eat about two pounds a day, on the third month it jump to four pounds a day, and on the fourth month they eat six pounds a day. you got to remember, this numbers may vary either more or less and the amount is per day and you have to divide it into how many times you feed them in a day. a word of advise; i soak the feeds into two and a half amount of water to to feeds. let say your five pounds of feeds is one gallon you have to add two and a half gallon of water and let it sit at least six hours before feeding them, so if you give the feeds in the morning it should be soak the night before and once you fed them soak another batch for their next meal. hope this will help. thanks for watching my video.

@@petercyrilayco6925 There's a big difference in terms of crude protein. soybean meal (not the soy beans) has 48% per bushel, whereas the azolla has 22.48%, though you can not consider by looking on the difference in crude protein. There are other elements/nutrients need to consider. And the reason you better go on smaller amount of azolla is because of these other nutrients. Some compound in azolla are not giving your animals the proper nutrients they need, on the other hand since you are mentioning soybean meal, they are already been processed and strip off the primary oils and protein from them, then the point is it is more nutrient ready to consume by the animals. here are the links for both: Azolla: ~ jebas.org/Jou.Exp.Bio.Agr.Sci/00400613112016/10.18006_2016.4(Issue6).670.674.pdf Soybean Meal: ~ www.ingredients101.com/soybeanml.htm And still the soy beans in it's raw and dry form gives a different nutrients; personally I use soy beans in raw form, I live in states that harvest soy beans every year and they are cheap for the money.
