Great job on your video! Thank you. I have been flying airplanes since 1982 and I have been building everything out of wood. Now that I'm starting to get into foam airplanes, your video has been very helpful to know how to get the popcorn out.

Great informative video. Next time you paint it would be great to actually watch you in action, your planes are beautiful - almost all of mine are balsa now, but you're making me think of switching back. I did a basic minwax spray on a couple older foamies and even just doing that made them much stronger and resistant to hangar rash, which was the whole reason I went to balsa in the first place - I don't crash often, but my foam planes started looking beat up just from the trips to and from the field... with your technique I think my foamies would be cheaper alternatives that fly just as nice and stay looking great for years! Thanks

Another tip to prevent paint bleed under your tape ruining your crisp lines is to put a coat of clear down (or a layer of polyurethane if you're using it) and let it dry prior to putting color down. Then any bleeds will be clear bleeds and will seal the edge.

Do you weigh the plane before and after to know how much the finish is?
@adamhale66725 жыл бұрын
I’m really new to rc and have my first scratch build coming up. How much weight does the minwax add? I can’t afford a lot of weight and was planning on costing in brown paper, but I’m not sure if that’ll be enough. Im also concerned that a spray on paint will corrode the foam if it gets through.
@t33jetman5 жыл бұрын
Order from Walmart.com the foam safe primer and don't use the Minwax to save some weight. Weight of the Minwax or paint is up to YOU as how many coats YOU put on. Spray one light coat if you want to save weight. Always remember to wet sand between coats to save weight . I use two foam brushes , one to put the Minwax light thin coat on, the the second foam brush to remove as much as I can the Minwax that is left on. One or two coats will do till you get good at this.

What did you use for the metal on the cowl of the T28 ? it looks good. I use the Liquid Chrome markers for detail on my models like the wheel rims etc works good and I always use Polycrylic on my foam models it makes them a lot tougher I find

Fantastic job. Especially loved the 3m fox that you did too. (I had one) just with stock decals though. I have a question please. I have a small foam glider I want to paint the wing tips and rudder only just for visibility, I plan on using rubbing alcohol to get rid of mould release agents, I have a foam safe paint ready but I'm really struggling to find foam safe clear coat to put on top to protect the paint from scratches. Worried about the foam being eaten with wrong products. Ideally a satin clear finish but the minwax satin is 32.00gbp over in UK. Any ideas on alternatives please? Over here they do sell rustoleum clear sealer in satin which is a lot cheaper, have you any experience with that please? Many thanks 😄
@t33jetman4 жыл бұрын
Mask off the area around your painted surface and the spray clear coat on your paint. If you don't want to do that you can spray clear coat from a DISTANCE ( more than 12 inches) not close up. 2 light Mist coats . Minwax as a base coat you can spray anything.

What do you think about the red/white/blue Air Force for a T28 like you’ve done on the A10? I’m prior service AF. I have a new Eflite T28 1.2 that I’d like to paint. I originally thought I’d paint it metallic and blue but I’m really digging the red/white/blue you did. What do you think? What are the actual colors you used? Also, originally I had though Matte versus glossy but this is my first go at this. Thanks much.

Good stuff! Could you please elaborate on the foam filler you use? I haven't found the perfect filler yet. They all seem to have different sanding and finishing results. I use similar techniques as you. No matter the finish, the sun is the enemy. The darker the color, the more light/heat absorbed. Even the hardest finishes cannot take it because the heat deforms the foam from the inside out or behind the hard shell. There used to be a supplier(s) of economically priced aircraft shades that stretched over the wingtips and tail to make a shaded tent over the aircraft. They will certainly extend the life of your finish as well. -Den

The plane shade that you are looking for is from a company called FMSMODEL.COM, $7.99. BEACON FOAM FILLER. I never leave my planes in the sun except to fly them.

Nice job! how many coats of color are you using and what clear are you finishing off with?
@t33jetman4 жыл бұрын
The number of coats is up to your liking for the look you want to achieve. I only use Rustoleum 2X clear on my planes and the number of coats is up to you and your liking and weight savings because you are going to add weight with paint. So go lite on the paint.
@jackmurray85595 жыл бұрын
It's Jack again. I am now getting ready to use all your ideas. However, one question, do you paint the planes in pieces or all assembled. thanks again. Jack

I find it better to take the plane apart and paint it. Easier for me. Mask off what you dont want painted. Take your time dont be in a rush and let the paint dry a day or two. Hope you are practicing on something first !

I loved your down to earth demeaner. I have the yellow avanti-s. Wow, what could be done! And the Horizon 2.1m Cessna. I'm tried to paint the bare foam white on the Cessna. Masking on red and the red paint lifts. So how would you prep that for a complete re-paint ? Remove the paint with acetone ? Sand it ? Anyway, inspiring work. Cheers.

What grit wet/dry sandpaper do you use to acquire these great results?
@t33jetman5 жыл бұрын
Anything over 400, work your way up 800, 1000. it's up to you on what results you want to get . It just takes more time if you want a super smooth finish. On some of my planes I just paint and clear coat and call it a day and just fly them .
@miller77594 жыл бұрын
First off I love your Birds Sir.... The Cessna and A-10 are Fabulous. I tried the Minwax and it works great. How ever it did lift on me when I peeled up the masking tape. I used frog tape as you suggested as well what did I do wrong? So to get the brush marks out I can wet sand it too? How thick should I apply the Min Wax? If I go to thick you get the white air bubbles? Seems to helps strengthen the foam descent and I like the glossy finish. Compaired to the Floor cleaner which is better and protects the foam better? I did the MinWax in my Eflite Commander Straight outta the box. I just wanna know why it lifted with the tape and how to do it right.
@t33jetman4 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear your problems. First of all I'd probably didn't make this clear and I have to make it much more clear you boss practice practice practice you are not going to get the Finish like I did just trying to do this the first time this is not easy it takes practice a lot of it and learn what works and doesn't doesn't work. Some things you can try and keep in mind number one was the plane cleaned with alcohol first to remove any release agent from the factory second thing to do sometimes I use sandpaper which is like eight hundred or higher maybe a thousand just to rough up the surface to give the Minwax something to stick to on my plane you can use three coats of Minwax used to dry between each coat which may take a day and you want to send the Minwax slightly before you start to put the primer on 3rd when I go to take my tape off as in the video I stated I use a heat gun to warm my tape up before I start pulling on it so that it does not live to tape on my A10 it has six coats of Minwax on it that's why it has such a thick surface to put my paint and peel the tape off on once again in closing you must practice practice practice this took years for me to learn and that's why I'm good at it hopefully you can recover from this if not acetone it off and start all over again and do it right
