That's exactly what happened on my newest XJ (cheap jeep Episode # 28) , the blower motor seal. My daughter's (the one I drilled a hole) is still working great and dry. Very informative video that will help hundreds if not thousands in the future!

Your video was one of a few I watched. Helped me understand what was going on under the sheet metal and what needed to be fixed. Or what I thought needed to be fixed lol. At least I won't have to worry about the fresh air intake for a while, and know that it is taken care of before it was an issue.

Use 3M seam sealer instead of RTV. Dries super tough and will hold that cowl piece fast

Good info..I think seam sealer might have been a better choice. I appreciate when someone shows how something didn't work because it happens to us all at some point. That's how we learn best sometimes.

Thanks! I have seen people use seam sealer. I actually just used RTV because I had it on hand. I checked it on my trip on the Continental Divide after hundreds of miles of vibrations and it is holding up well. Will see about long term though. I too like when people show the “dont’s” or mistakes. I try to show both on my channel whenever I can. I’m far from perfect ... and don’t try to portray anything different.

Very good video, I would have used a mig welder to attach that panel, which is a very easy job, then seal it .

Ah, so that's what it looks like under the cowling. I like Major Weakness channel too. The seal looks well done around the inlet area. That should do the trick (if it was leaking). I know it's hard working in a driveway dragging your tools out so well done. Plus filming it all added to the aggravation but this will help other XJ owners for sure.

As you know, filming at least doubles the time, so that did make it all the more interesting. Working in the driveway, and walking back and forth to my shop for items not in my tool box, adds even more time haha. In my next life I will have your garage :) Then I can really get some stuff done.

@@simpleoverlander be thankful you at least have a driveway. those of us living in apartments aren't even allowed to work on our vehicles. We have to try to get everything done over the weekend while management is away or take it somewhere else to work on it.

I cut mine back too but not as far. With water running from a garden hose into the cowling the water flowed away from the inlet much less get high enough to overflow over the metal lip that surrounds that inlet. Regardless, I sprayed a rubberized rust encapsulator product in the gap using a flexible extension hose and nozzle. I cut a replacement plate, coated the back side with chassis black and used SS blind pop rivets and auto panel adhesive. After, covered it with encapsulator as well. I wouldn’t recommend using RTV it doesn’t hold up on the long term. Better to use products designed for it.

On a flat surface the water did run away, but if parked nose up in a driveway or on a street, that is when I think water would be more likely to get in since the drainage changes. This was even more prevalent for my actual leak, the blower motor seal. I agree the RTV is not the right way to close this up. I was in a hurry for a trip so went this route. Your method is more permanent and something I will look at when I tackle at this again. Thanks for the detailed comment.

Although I misdiagnosed why I had a leak at my firewall on the passenger side, I did complete this job. Hopefully this video will help those that need to do this job, and at the very least, show what it looks like in the cowl at the fresh air intake vent. I don't recommend the RTV method to close this up. It will leak eventually. I only did that because I was pressed for time to be on the road. My leak was actually due to the blower motor seal (oops). I won't have to worry about this any time soon though.

...very helpful video ! I guess my cowl drain holes are clogged - how to get there ? Can you access these by removing the front inner liners ? Many thanks !
@simpleoverlander
@simpleoverlander 3 жыл бұрын
From what I saw in my cowl, there weren'tt drain holes. The water escapes by slipping through the joints in the sheet metal on each side of the Jeep. The only way to access that is to take the top cover off, as I did in this video, clean out the drivers side by hand, then use an air hose to try and get the passengers side. Without cutting the metal (like I did) there is no way to get over there easily. Those clogged corners can definitely cause the water to build up!

thing is a lot of us realize its an old rig and are just trying to keep it going. the floor could be rusting out while your paying attention to other issues. in my 99 i just removed all the floor carpet and its soaked underneath. sometimes you see that and the floors gone, anything anybody can come up with is a help. i wouldnt use silicone but maybe thats all he had. if i had nothing else i would make a full patch and insert the pieces into cutouts. but thats just me. i dont want to cherry my jeep and take it out anyway. whats the point, keep it running good, not rusted out and safe and go have fun.🙂i may have a leak under my heater seal, someone elses experience is my education. now i have a starting point.

I don't have the time and place to remove the dashboard so I paid a mechanic, $850, problem solved in one day. My Jeep is 100% original. I don't agree to do this kind of jobs, unless you are using it as a mud toy, is a third world country repair engineering.
