How I Setup Takedowns in BJJ

When you're going for takedowns in BJJ. What are you looking for? How do you decide which BJJ takedown to use?
Do you have a systematic approach to takedowns? Do you focus on looking for certain grips or adjustments from your opponent, or do you just lock up and cross your fingers that something will happen?
In this video I give a little insight into what I'm looking for personally on my feet when going for takedowns. Mainly I talk about how I determine the BJJ takedown I plan to use.
You'll see, that just like any other position. I observe which grips i can secure and which grips my opponent gives me. From there I choose the best take down for the situation.
Often times. I see that most people don't have a smart approach to takedowns in BJJ. They just lock up and move around until someone screws up. But yet on the ground they know exactly where they are going.
Likewise I try to give you some ideas on what you could look for when you're on the feet in Brazilian Jiujitsu.
You'll have to excuse me a bit as I was super hyper in this video. And I'm kind of all over the place.
But hopefully there is some good ideas for you to use for your own Brazilian Jiu-jitsu takedowns or BJJ training.

Haha I can't shave my head bald. My head is not round and smooth. Instead it looks like a bag of lumpy mashed potatoes.

In A Handbook on Wrestling from the 1890s it says to not stay too upright (to avoid arm throws) and not to expose the armpits to underhooks (mistake made by reaching for the opponent or keeping the elbows loose). It also says not to go for the legs unless already clinching. I go to class and just look for these mistakes to land takedowns. I also start from Collar & Inside tie cause it leads to all other takedowns and because it doesn't expose you to any of the above problems (too upright, elbows wide etc.). My two cents.

This video comes closest to what I'm looking for but still leaves me kind of clueless: as a white belt my goal right now is to learn what the optimal posture looks like in each position in order to just survive as long as possible. I feel like there's a lot of guidance on this channel when in someone's guard, for instance, but I have no idea what the strategy is when standing vs a standing opponent. What make one grip more dominant than another? Which grip should I be deflecting, which one is okay to let them have? Am I leaning over enough, etc. Put really simply, I guess my question is if there's a pile of money in the corner I can have if I remain standing against a black belt for 30 seconds, what's my strategy, and what weaknesses is he/she looking for?

Question for you sir. I've been doing MMA/No Gi BJJ for about six years now. I started doing Gi 7 months ago and caught onto everything very quickly. I've been stuck at 1 stripe on my white belt after winning gold in competition and (not to sound cocky) but I smash 85% of the blue belts at the gym. I've been told by almost everyone at the gym I deserve my blue belt and this includes two of the black belts there. If that's the case why am I not advancing in rank let alone a stripe? My main question is if the skill and technique is there should I not be promoted? Or am I just being impatient? Or is it just the gym? Thanks in advance my friend
@Chewjitsu
@Chewjitsu 7 жыл бұрын
I got your question. I'll work on using it in a video. The short answer though is you're being impatient. Enjoy your time in the sun! Enjoy being on the top of heap in your belt level. Because eventually you'll move up and things get tougher. A lot of people want to be at the next belt or stripe. But there's nothing special waiting for them there. Instead find the motivators in BJJ for you and focus on those. Let the belts and stripes come as they may.

Hey Chewy Can you do a video on takedowns from the knees. My school gets packed sometimes so we have to start on our knees. Any tips? I'm always getting the worst of those exchanges

Heather Perez Try a head and arm throw. Erik Paulson suggested it and it really works wonders if you have a good Scarf Hold Or side control.

You shouldn’t be trying to wrestle on the knees because it really isn’t similar to takedowns from standing. We start on the knees at my gym all the time and it’s up to someone to pull gaurd

So for beginners, what style of takedowns should I focus on? I have only been training jiu jitsu for a little over a month and my instructor keeps showing me more and more judo moves, but most of the other students have some background in wrestling. I get thrown to the mat and taken down AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN. How can I even up the score? (Besides me being very inexperienced and very new to martial arts in general) how can I defend from the strong wrestling guys? And should I focus on the judo which my instructor likes. Or wrestling to try and catch up to the level of my classmates? Thanks for any input you can given

Woodscrafters Apprentice I would practice judo since the other people have way more practice in wrestling than you. Also it would be way harder for the other people to defend your throwing since they have less experience

Woodscrafters Apprentice Keep learning and getting your Judo throws from your coach for Gi takedowns, and ask your friends at the gym for help with your wrestling for No Gi. Its good to have both styles for different options. Osss!

Learning how to sprawl and cross-face when someone shoots in to take you down will go a long way toward defending the wrestling take-downs. And yes, you should practice what your instructor shows you.

First learn to focus on grips. You can control a lot just by dominating grips. Second, I'm completely bias. I like the versatility of wrestling for gi or no gi. And they are what I feel best with. I'd say work on both and develop the style that works best for you.

hey, can you do a video on what to do when youre in a good position, e.g. mount, and your opponent just goes t-rex Mode and pulls his hands and arms to his body and the sweat makes it even more difficult to grab something? The only thing I sometimes come up with against that are some face locks like pressing my elbow in my opponents face. But that cant be the only way right? Especially because this isnt high percentage.

Personally, I might switch to side control and work the neck if they're keeping arms down low and in, but that's just me and my comfort in side control. Likely differs from one person's game to another.
