The Off Grid Experience

2 ай бұрын

Finished tapping my spring using bentonite clay and hydraulic cement. Overall, it was a successful learning experience as I'm getting about a gallon per minute of fresh, cold spring water.
Celebrated my 50th birthday mid-May in the Canadian Rockies. What an unforgettable trip.
Thanks to Itehil for sending me their portable water purifier to test out. Seems like a really useful product to have on hand. You can buy one at a discount below:

That was a smart use of bentonite clay, that stuff is so useful. While you might not live primitive off grid you’re way ahead of 99% of the population who rely on everyday creature comforts. You’ve built one heck of a cabin. Your birthday in the Canadian Rockies looked amazing.

It’s nice that you made a number of conveniences and comfort not just for you but also your wife. And things that you have put in place I feel like they are definitely off grid no matter what somebody thinks. It’s not like you’re getting power from electric and water from a faucet from the People have to pay every month. And I do think it’s a little bit nicer than off grid like the old days because we didn’t have these new things to help you build up the things that you have made. However, in the old days there was a lot of people that were just like you. so I’m very proud of your work and I love your cabin. I would love to have a place set up like you have. But at my age, but I can dream along with you as you live it

Will never forget my four years of being stationed in Montana(Late 70s Early 80's). Spring, Summers, Fall were fantastic backpacking adventures as much as possible. Been to some of the places you show. In the winter we had a favorite song from Randy Bachman/Neil Young - Potage and Main - 30F below, you stay inside and rock and roll.

Do get a water test done. Because your spring is so close to the creek and just down hill it could have some ground water seeping into it. A reputable lab will check for E. coli, acidity, alkalinity, pH, conductivity, total suspended solids, sulfate, iron, aluminum, and lead. Most uncontaminated spring water when taken at its source when it comes to the surface can be consumed without further treatment or filtration. Creek water needs treatment and or filtration, particularly due to animals living in close proximity.

Happy Birthday. The pictures you shared of your visit to the area of Banff are beautiful. We pass through that area from where we live in Southern BC, to family in Alberta. Always photos to take. Different seasons, all have so much beauty. God's creation is amazing, if we but open our eyes. Nice work on your spring. Will you need to do anything for the " spring", to go through winter?

If your PVC pipe you drilled does not provide enough drainage, you mgiht consider 4 inch drainage tile pipe. Also, the wife and I was up at Banff a few months ago and had lunch on the upper patio restaurant at the Fairmont hotel there. The lake view at Lake Louise, I understand, is the most photographed spot in the world per one of the guides there.

Interesting video. One question I have is the seasonal water flow in that creek and whether there’s a chance of water running on to your spring. It seems pretty level with the creek right there. I’m guessing that you’ve already thought about that but I’m curious either way.

Good question. The Spring is a couple feet above creek. Will definitely have to monitor it when we get torrential rains. 👍

How much fall to the cabin ? Wondering if running a line to the hot tub and one to a large tank to feed cabin, the over flow could feed a small micro hydo set up to provide some power. Bentonite is amazing stuff.

Thats a good catch basin but it should feed your main tank that is sealed except for a air vent keep all critters out. And spring lizards hav to be able to get in the pipe they keep it flowing??? I ve lived in the Appalachian s all my life My 500 gal tank has 2 catch basins .and my out pipes are at least 6" off the bottom. I clean them every fall Just trying to save you sum hard knocks learning
