The Off Grid Experience

Ай бұрын

In the last video I installed a rainwater storage system with gravity fed filtration. Unfortunately, there was no rain to test the system out. Three weeks later and we are ready to see THE RESULTS!
Here's the First Flish Diverter I mention in video:
Downspout First Flush Diverter Kit, 3"

I also attempt to develop and tap a ground spring back where the future log cabin will be built.

Wow! Congratulations. Finding a live water source spring on your property is invaluable. I live on acreage in the Missouri Ozarks, I found out that previous owners had a spring feeding a moonshine still back in the 1950s, but ... someone decided to clear land with a bulldozer 20 years ago and covered it up and it is no longer on the surface. Been looking for it for 7 years now. Don't shy away from making a suitable financial investment in your spring. Year round drinking water is a precious natural commodity. Enjoy your blessings.

The spring reminded me of my days of working on the railroad. Working on a Section gang in rural Indiana. One day the Foreman said, we'll fill our water keg from a spring. I knew nothing about Giardia. I soon found out. Be sure to filter that water. I wouldn't wish the results of not filtering spring water on anybody. Thanks for the update, and I look forward to the next one.

Your stories always remind me of my youth. I lived in the city but we did have a large creek very close to my childhood home. My friends and I could play around there by the hour. We explored, we built things, outta branches and small twigs, even dams of a sort, and we always had fun. Thanks for this mini escape to a much larger variety of our childish adventures. Brother, from a fellow Tennessean you’ve got the right mindset for your spring and being that water comes straight from limestone and you’re so far out in the woods you’ve got to make some good ol’ moonshine for sure even if you don’t drink you owe it to yourself and every other good ole boy 💯! Our spring is a good distance below house site. We have an excellent flow rate so we ran pex from the catchment to a buried 500 gallon tank. Dropped a well pump and it pumps to a pressure tank that’s up the hill in the building . It’s pretty steep elevation from our tank and with the well pump and pressure tank, we have no issues with water flow or pressure. Works good for us. The buried tank has a overflow so the water is constantly circulating.

It was easy to cover, and kept most of the debris and critters out, and was easy to clean. You’re doing great, I think you have come up with a good plan. I have seen smaller dams built on streams and you got the right idea but you should try box the area & add a pipe instead the plastic use rocks & cement like the hydrostatic is good then to keep the water safe run it through any pipe or get a roll plastic water line start like 2" at dam then drop to 1" about half way to the cabin it will help the pressure build up a bit !

We’re really wanting to start collecting our water run off from our roof, but it’s Very inexpensive here in Washington state. According to our laws the state owns every drop of water. So we would need to bury our system so it cannot be seen. But I’ve been thinking about how I can route the water to our oversized garage. I enjoy watching your videos, thanks for sharing them.

If you want more water pressure take the barrel spigot off and feed directly to filters and place a shutoff on the hose side. I would never drink that water. To much of a chance of bacterial contamination from birds and animal pee and poop. Nice for other uses. Nice job.

@drewconrad7093
@drewconrad7093 Ай бұрын
To make it go up into the cabin, you might need a12v pump. Also the more the barrels are full, the more pressure there will be to go thru the filters. If that is where you are going to leave the outdoor stove, you should think about a shelf under the window to put any spices for when you cook. Are you going to build a second bridge in the other ravine? Do you plan on building a power generating wheel on the creek?

I helped my dad tap a spring on our NC property back in 1971 with a washtub. I was barely a teenager. The tub had a screen over it to prevent debris and he used pvc pipe to connect it downhill to the camper. There were no filters back then so everything was filtered with screen. I have to say that water was COLD and we used it for everything. No one died or got sick. He sold the property in the late 70’s. I’d love to go back to see if it’s still there. The camper is long gone of course.

Nice video. 1 Question, how do you combat ticks? I have rural property similar to yours (much smaller in size) and every time I’m out there clearing, thinning out woods or trails, felling trees, I always have a tick or two either crawling on me or attached. I spray but I still get them on me. I had issues with chiggers too but after clearing a few years ago, they seemed to have disappeared. Thanks for sharing and look forward to your next video.

Always keep brush clear. Most i get come from green small plants and trees below shoulder height. Permethrin is what I use, only on my rubber boots. @@ElwoodPDowd-ed7pc I don't like it either but it's an absolute necessity where I am. I spray and fully let dry my rubber mid knee boots every 3 weeks or so. I always leave the top 3 inches clean to help not transfer chemical. I've gotten very mindful to not touch my boots. Before that, 30-40 years ago, I used to soak my boots in some diesel oil/fuel mix and would tie a rag around my knee. Worked pretty good, but nothing like permethrin.

Thanks for an interesting Video...I would love to have a Spring on my 4 acres..I guess the County has a map showing where the Spring are at....In the 60's we had a Spring on the edge of the road A farmer put some iron pipe for flow & people would go there for fresh water...as time went on people started to put their trash there & I mean 30 gallon size. so the farmer had to clean up the mess in his field before he could farm...it takes a few idiots to ruin it for others...he destroyed the Spring-gone-he warned people but the people didn't listen....I have to find the one 15 miles from me & another on 30 miles from me.....

OK Get as much dirt and rocks out of the way. find exactly where the water is perfeating out of the rock. Build a rock and mortar round wall all the way around. Let it fill with water then leave a over flow spout where you want it ti drain down hill. Make sure you have a good sealed cover no dead mice in water. set solar battery and pump off you go. remove pump when freezing
