In this episode of Wrecked Bike Rebuild Garge, the guys somehow find even more metal in places they didn't expect while taking apart the CBR 1000 Engine. All this while we still haven't discovered what was causing the motor to knock.

Very interesting. I like how there's a novice guy who asks very relevant question, it's helpful for those who don't know much about engines. And the mechanic guy (I don't got their names) explain very well. It'd be interesting to see the teardown of a stock 1000cc not rebuilt like this one with a bunch of miles on it. Like a r1 crossplane (since you mentioned it) with something like 50k miles on it. Greetings from France, I suscribe

Really good up to the valve cotter.... Collet point... Agreed on it bouncing around the valve train and around the cam shaft(S), chain/gears etc but, for it to pass the valve guide the valve would have to not be in there. A gap big enough for a collect to drop through to the valve seat and cylinder is not feasible for multiple reasons. Most of all it would smoke like all hell, your intake charge would end up in the head/cam aperture. And gaps that big behind intake and exhaust valves for them to drop through would result in said charge bypassing the combustion chamber.. That said tops to you guys on everything else so much knowledge conveyed in brilliant manner, easy going and so well produced. Keep it up guys! Much love Joe

OC, I don't want to find bashed anything in an engine. Fun story though, rebuilt a CBX way back when and when we first took it out and opened it up it seemed like it was starved. Wouldn't wind out like it should and generally down on power. started in the airbox ... where we found a rats (voles?) nest of debris. Turns out while the previous owner had it torn down in his shop, the vermin built a nest over the winter. We looked back through the airbox and the filter was clean (inside) so we never took it out during reassembly. If any of the residents had been there for the test ride, they lived through a hurricane.

The R1 went back to 4 valves per in the 2007-8 R1, before the cross plane in 2009. The 5 valve head was better in overall combustion chamber efficiency (using a slightly dished piston), but Yamaha had difficulty making it work while having to reduce emissions. The dished pistons would not allow the use of a high enough compression ratio while passing emissions. The 4 valve was cheaper to manufacture, could pass tighter emissions, worked with higher compression, and could be tuned to a higher stressed state to make up the extra power to match the 5 valve. That's according to Yamaha.

@scottb8175
@scottb8175 3 жыл бұрын
It's not just the higher octane in premium fuel, it is the higher quality of the premium fuel (more / better refining and more / better additives) that reduces the carbon build up. Regular gas is just horrible quality fuel. It starts to break down and form varnish deposits in the fuel system in three weeks. The only engine I have that doesn't get premium is my beater car. Even with good fuel, excessive carbon build up occurs more because of idling and insufficient oil changes. Remember how old timers used to drive their muscle cars at full throttle / top speed every now and then to 'blow the carbon out'? There is some truth in that one.

When engines were first developed to have four valves per cylinder, the design was to improve fuel economy. It was not until they built the first engines that they found the nice and unexpected biproduct that was extra power. Oh and don't tell Chase about OHV, CVH engines etc lol
@CraftwerksMC
@CraftwerksMC 3 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure they knew about the power effect long before the economy affect. Remember the old saying, race on Sunday sell on monday... Guys were putting huge valves in engines long before there was a 4 valve for HP gains because more air being forced in + more power. It just takes a lot of manufacturing dev and machining capability to reconfigure a head for more valves instead of bigger valves if you don't already have a multi-valve setup.
@HalfdeadRider
@HalfdeadRider 3 жыл бұрын
@@CraftwerksMC No, it's because the design was intentionally aimed at improving engine economy. More smaller valves make engines more efficient without allowing more air + fuel mixture in. More air + fuel will make an engine less economical.
@scottb8175
@scottb8175 3 жыл бұрын
OK, stop the bus - in four stroke engines the valves reciprocate 1/2 times the pistons do, not double. Also, the valve collets can't get to the valve springs or back of the valves and into the cylinder unless there is a big hole knocked out of the head first. A dislodged collet has to stay under the valve bucket lifter and above the retainer until the cam comes out or the head breaks into chunks of aluminum. The valve would have to drop into the cylinder and get mangled and then punched through the head by the piston.

It was the NR750, and it went into 'limited production' in 1992. The NR500 was first, however - the Soichiro Honda 500 GP cheater V-8.....in 1979 the engineers at Honda were dropping millions of dollars on developing the 4 - stroke 32 valve 500 cc oval piston racing engines to compete with 500 cc GP 2 -strokes like the RG500 and OW500. They'd practically hand make the engines at HRC, only to try and get them to make power while revving past 20 000 rpm, and blowing them up one after another on the dyno. One engineer was asked how they could justify such massive waste. His answer was "We are short of time, not money".

Wait a sec.. I always believed that the springs also pushed/rotated the camshaft back.. hence returning the power back into the engine.. is that true.. maybe at higher rpms this does not happen but saying that valve trains useup a good amount of engine power. Idk but dosen’t make much sense

Can you ask Brian about replacing engine cases with different internals. I have a cracked engine case and wanted to do a rebuild with new cases transferring old internals with new bearing and gaskets. Keep up the awesome work.

Besides the usual gaskets and seals, you will likely have to replace some of the crank bearings at minimum, as they are matched to the crankcases for bearing bore and journal size on Japanese motorcycle plain bearing crankshaft engines like the CBR, R1, GSXR, ZX-10, etc...

@@scottb8175 That's what I was thinking too. Between the items mentioned and O-rings which I guess is included in seals, I should be good. Just haven't seen anyone do a transfer from a damaged case to a fresh engine case. Appreciate the reply though.. Looking forward to getting back on 2's again!

@@andreh8590 I hope it goes well. Most shops have done case swaps. Cases get damaged all the time.....but the labor cost is wicked.

OC. I’d rather find a piece of metal. Cause then I can find definitive evidence of the piece and further inspect other hardware. Depending on the damage, I could decide whether a new engine or just a few pieces of hardware.

OC: I would prefer not to find anything in the engine that's not supposed to be there but if I had absolutely no choice and had to have one in there I would say a piece of metal. It's easier to fix damage from a piece of metal than the vole that somehow crawled up in there to be smashed to a bloody pulp because then you would wonder how in the *quack* did it get in there in the first place. Besides they're cute so no I don't want to find a bloody vole pulp in any engine I have thank you very much. Sorry for long post lol
