Despite having lost the likes of Ben White, Yves Bissouma, Marc Cucurella, and Leandro Trossard over the last couple of seasons, as well as their head coach Graham Potter, Brighton & Hove Albion are currently sitting pretty in 10th place in the Premier League - well on course for their best ever season and possibly even European qualification.
It is a feat which has been made possible by some of the best transfer business in football, with star players like Moises Caicedo, Kaoru Mitoma, and Alexis Mac Allister having slipped seamless in to replace and improve upon every one of their departures.
So in this documentary, HITC Sevens takes an in-depth look at Brighton's remarkable recruitment, the role of their owner Tony Bloom and his company Starlizard in their date-driven approach, and whether the whole thing is sustainable.

It's important to also focus on Brighton's selling policy as well. Brighton don't mind selling players, but only if the scenario suits them. They realise no one from outside Brighton (and even most of those in Brighton) dreams of playing for the Seagulls. The club's ability to sell to and desirability to bigger clubs forms part of their attraction to players. Only however if the deal suits them. Not only price but also timing and the availability of replacements. This is why Trossard was let go but Caceido wasn't. Trossard they deemed was replaceable, too most already surpassed, by Mitoma and others. They weren't confident in replacing Caceido though so seamlessly at this point of the year. He will move on, but only when Brighton have the time and personnel to fill the void.
@holcable
@holcable Жыл бұрын
This is the same with staff. They have an open door policy with staff where if anyone makes a reasonable approach they will allow staff to talk to other teams. This ensures the happiness and ambition of the staff and increases how attractive the club is even to non playing staff.

What I'm saying though is it's rare that anyone grows up dreaming of playing for Brighton (even Lewis Dunk grew up supporting Chelsea) and Brighton know that. Our attraction to most players is how well run the club is and how well it can progress their career, especially if they want to play for those top tier teams with worldwide fanbases. Hopefully one day Brighton will have built that worldwide following and don't have to sell, but until then they need to sell (at the right times) if they want to keep attracting these gems from all around the world.

As an "older" American, I grew up as a NY Cosmos fan, but after the NASL dissolved in 1984, I didn't follow soccer much, until got married, had kids, and my kids began playing soccer. Although I watch the Premier League regularly, never became a fan of any one team, rather instead usually cheering for whichever team was the underdog. However, I have really taken an interest in Brighton the past few years. Like they way they play, and how as a underdog, they've risen to the challenge. Great video! As an American, I became a Brighton fan 4 years ago. I was dating this woman for many years who was a fan of crystal palace. I didn't care much for premier league, so I would support whatever team she supported, but after the breakup, EPL was starting up, and I didn't want to continue supporting a team that I only followed for my ex. So I began supporting Brighton. There were dozens of my friends who told me what I was doing was petty, immature, and I'd never find another bird who accepted me as I was. I lost many friends over the years, but the one thing I never lost was myself and who I really was. Eventually Brighton stopped becoming a piss-take club, and became a feeder club that the top 6 pissers would take players from. Still, similar to how I once was after my breakup, I see myself in Brighton in many ways. No matter how much you take away from this team, they never lose focus on where their heart is. We know who we are and anyone we accept into our life is to help build our sanctuary, not tear it apart. You can try to bring us down but you will never succeed. Brighton's history is so incredible. If they won the premier league that would be a film that not even Hollywood could top, not even Leicester's story could compare. Mark my words: Brighton & Hove Albion will win the league someday.

Still the 2nd half of season to go, but if they continue to succeed on the pitch and finish in Top 10 of table, challenging for spots to play in European competitions next season, enough can't be said for how well they have done, as well as the club itself being run & the envy many others have towards them and their scouting & recruitment they do so well!!! Roberto De Zerbi should be considered, if not favorite, for Manager of Year, along with ETH, Arteta, among others having great seasons. It will be tough for anyone to win it ahead of the Managers at the top clubs, especially if Arsenal do win PL. We were the victims of our own modest success, as the FA took Roy Hodgson, Dan Ashworth and members of our Medical and Analysis teams as well. At one point other clubs, including, apparently our great rivals Wolves were looking at how we were run and our recruitment and how we stayed solvent in the Premier League. Those were the days.... As a saints fan, be careful in your optimism Brighton. 7/8 years ago we were literally in the exact same position, came up, solid foundation years, progressed under Pochettino, sold a lot of players in the summer, somehow didn’t affect us and did even better under koeman (this is your DeZerbi), you’ll sell up again in the summer and I expect a plateau (this was our puel year), then it goes wrong. You’ll start to slip down the table, you have to put up with all the pundits saying how selling all your best players catches up with you. In this premier league, unless you do a newcastle, you cannot break sustainably into the big six- even Leicester couldn’t. Everyone apart from the big six are one a carousel of false dawns and back to reality unfortunately

He just explained why we're not like Southampton? Our success comes from our owner, who won't leave, yours came from Pochettino and Koeman, who did leave.

That’s the worry we have. I look at Southampton who should be in a top 5 spot but have had all their players and staff constantly poached. I worry that the same will happen to us

Even if Brighton stagnate and are consistently missing out on top 6 for the next few years, I don’t think anyone could deny Bloom has been a revelation to the club and will probably get a statue or stand named after him at some point, he is for certain a club legend

Good scouting with good owners leads to good player recruitment. Southampton's signings whilst they had Paul Mitchell as head scout were impressive. Dortmund's signings whilst they had Sven Mislintat as head scout were excellent. Leicester's signings of Kante, Mahrez and Vardy for peanuts whilst they had Steve Walsh as head scout were insanely good. Arsenal paying a very small fee for Martinelli due to their head scout Edu (with his Brazilian connections). With good owners and a top head scout, you don't need to spend huge sums of money on transfers. What Chelsea are doing is unsustainable.

a documentary on the afc Wimbledon on the nine promotions in eleven years, how they’re a fan own club and how they have a stadium in plough lane now. The story of they lost the club, how the F A allowed that and won’t allow that anymore. How they were very close to moving to ireland How they went up the English football leagues. It would be a good documentary video if you can do this. #thepeopleschannel

I do think some bargin players are passed by big teams because they simply can't bring them in...caicedo wouldn't of broke into arsenals team after 13 games in a Belgium b league on loan but i don't think they would even scout those areas for that reason....what Brighton are doing is truly amazing and obviously hard to impossible to replicate or other teams would, I think its sustainable as long as that formula stays secret

15:44 Think if you combine a statistical approach with good psychological evaluations before signing a player (you’d have to meet the player first obviously) it covers the side that data alone can’t gather data on. If the two meet the standard I’d confidently feel you’re good to go and it’s not as risky as people imagine and it puts it way ahead of the very risky moneyball strategy.

Very interesting video as always. If I may suggest you if not to create subtitles, than maybe to write names of footballers and clubs you are mentioning in the video. automatic subtitles don't help with names and it's really unclear especially with some lesser known people and leagues

Yes, data is key. But the organisation is built in a different way. Most companies and especially football clubs are built like a pyramid with the MD/CEO at the tip. That works fine, but as can be seen in football, it then relies on key positions such as the manager. Lose a good manager and the train hits the buffers. Brighton's structure is more of a spiders web. Taking one person out of the structure, does not break anything, issues are instantly rerouted in the short term. Then Tony Blooms methodical "fix it, right, first time" ethos, doesn't rush to fix, but looks for the right fix. When Potter left, there were calls for Rodgers, Pochettino, Dyche, etc, etc, etc. to get in quick. Instead, Brighton already had an up to date list of preferred replacements and reviewed those over a number of days and got RDZ in.

I wounder if Kyle Macaulay leaving to Chelsea will change the scouting since he's been Potter's Scout in Öfk, Swansea, Brighton and now Chelsea. When he left Öfk our recruiting took a turn for the worse when he left. He's roll is "recruitment analyst" and one of Potters key men.

@@latelatecheung yes, I'm guessing Potter hasn't been fully in charge of who Chelsea has bought in January. His strength as a coach has always been building a team over time, but in Chelsea he must get faster results. I'm guessing he will be more involved in the summer transfers.
