What is going on my mates! I hope you have all been extremely well! Today we are going to be talking about The Killers and their song called Mr Brightside from their 2004 album Hot Fuss... I'm sure you've never heard of it. But for real, there are so many things about this song that blow me away that will be discussed in this video. I was sitting down a couple weeks ago and was listening to Mr. Brightside and in my head I was like " How Is Mr. Brightside Still Relevant? " like not just kinda relevant, extremely relevant. The Killers and Brandon Flowers must've done something right if Mr. Brightside is still seeing time on the charts.
Mr. Brightside was the first song that The Killers wrote as a song, it was written by Brandon Flowers and Dave Keuning and was originally released in 2003 with a good response. But when it was re-released in 2004 was when it really took off. It's from their album Hot Fuss and Hot Fuss was released over 15 years ago now.. it's so crazy. The Killers as well as Brandon Flowers remain a staple in rock music and likely will for a very long time.
Mr. Brightside is the second track on Hot Fuss (2004) via Island Records and sits snug between other outstanding tracks like: Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine, Smile Like You Mean It, Somebody Told Me, All These Things That I've Done, Andy You're A Star, On Top, Change Your Mind, Believe Me Natalie, Midnight Show, and Everything Will Be Alright
The Killers & Mr. Brightside forever
Thank you
Okay, now it is time to find out: How Is Mr. Brightside Still Relevant?
I will thank you and eat a jolly rancher if you follow my brand on IG @matesclubusa
thank you always
Love you.

It's a minor quibble, but I gotta disagree with you on your point about the song not being problematic for anyone. A central lyric ambiguously encourages the listener fill in the rhyming blanks with the word "dick." Not at all an issue for me, in fact I think it's one of the many incredibly clever things about this song that makes it so appealing, but it could certainly be problematic for some: "Now they're going to bed And my stomach is sick And it's all in my head But she's touching his chest now He takes off her dress now Let me go..."

Their first 5 studio albums were Number 1 here whereas in the USA only their latest (5th) album reached number 1. Also their influences for HF were almost exclusively British so in a way you could say the band is British. :)

One thing I’d love to point out, is the fact how well “Hot Fuss” has aged in general. “All The Things That I’ve Done” sounds like a song that would come out in 2012-13, but the fact that it’s over a decade old makes it even more fascinating in general and further proves that this album is a timeless classic.

Fun fact: Brandon Flowers mentions in an interview that when he had only ever heard the song with a guitar because they didn't have a drummer yet. So since it was just the two of them he didn't feel any need to write a second verse for them to practice it. He intended to eventually but when he finally heard the song with a drummer. He got chills and didn't want to change anything. So he just kept the verse the same.

Iconic, sure, but far too long for regular play in the time it was released, which is why the people who genuinely grew up with it were usually already Queen fans who bought the album. Not nearly as iconic in nature, nor as accessible to its target audience.

I'm chuckling at the fact that "15 years!" sounds amazing to the narrator. Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' *album* charted for 937 weeks. There are songs far more timeless than Mr Brightside that are so fundamental to the idiom of Western music that they've charted repeatedly over decades and been covered or sampled hundreds of times. A great recent example is 'The Sound of Silence' which has been a cornerstone of Western music since it was released 55 years ago and charted yet again when Disturbed recently did an amazing cover of it. The best part of this is that with a little luck, the narrator is on the verge of discovering decades of amazing music that he's apparently not encountered yet.
@ashleyneku5432
@ashleyneku5432 5 жыл бұрын
@@markcoren2842 You. Miraculously. Missed. The. Point. His point is that the measure of "icononography" used here for the songs is how long it has consecutively charted, meaning Mr. Brightside has not had a single week of NOT charting in the last 15 years, which is the longest. Of. Any. Song. Ever. Released. In. History. HOW in god's name you people continually think that the narrator is referring to "iconic" like he's saying it's subjectively the bestest song in the universe is beyond me. He clearly stated and cited where he was coming from, and literally half the comments are people going "Queen is the bestest," "I like AC/DC more," and "This guy clearly never heard Pink Floyd play, or he wouldn't dare use the word iconic around me." God. Fucking. Damn. It. He's not comparing two songs you like because you think knowing Pink Floyd's biggest-selling record makes you an elitist music snob who "totally doesn't dig those new sounds." He's examining how a singular record became the longest-charting single in world history, and postpones a couple reasons why this might be. Stop showing up just to bring up another, unrelated song that does not share that distinction, as soon as another song charts for 15 consecutive years without dropping off the chart for even a single week, we can compare that to Brightside.

I’ll always remember making my way through the crowd to the main stage at Bonnaroo to see the Killers. When all of the sudden they play Mr. Brightside right off the bat while a large portion of the crowd is still making their way over. Everyone starts running and singing their way quickly to the stage and the crowd is full of energy! I danced my way from one side of the field to the other to meet up with my group. All along the way was nothing but smiling faces and dancing people. Ahh just a happy lil memory.

One thing that always caught my ear with this song was playing against expectations in the middle of a very catchy song. The shift in not rhyming ‘sick’ with what I expected (touching his...CHEST now) while simultaneously shifting into the bridge was brilliant. Always thought that was one of the cleverer pieces of this song. Not sure if it was intended that way, but was one of the best examples I can think of in playing against type and expectations musically, making it really memorable.

i remember this one time i heard this song come over the radio in a store, and as i was walking down the aisles singing the song to myself, almost every person i walked past was singing it or humming parts of it to themselves as well. this song somehow has this magic around it that just makes it unable to be disliked. it may not be someone's taste in music, but i have some friends that hate this kind of music yet still know every lyric to this song and sing along with it everytime someone puts it on. i dont think this song will ever truly die out because somewhere down the line our music will become someone else's "classic" and breathe a new life into this song.

The venue dj put on some music in the mean time when Mr. Brightside came on. Everyone immediately started cheering and singing along. I was there with some friends and honestly, singing along to Mr. Brightside with them was one of the major points of the night. This song is amazing and I don't think it'll stop being so any time soon.

Seriously people outside the UK really don’t understand the phenomenon that this song is over here, there’s not a single club night or prom night in the country where you won’t here Mr Brightside, even clubs that play zero rock music will play it and everyone will know it. It’s crazy as it was not massive when it came out unlike other anthems like Wonderwall, it did well but it’s only really become this huge phenomenon in the last few years among teenagers and young adults who weren’t even old enough to remember the song when it first came out. Even people who’ve never heard of The Killers or like rock music know it. It’s so crazy that in this age where music tastes are so specific and splintered now that there’s never a song that everyone likes and barely anything has a fully widespread cultural impact anymore, that everyone loves this song no matter whether you like rock, indie, pop, dance, rap etc but people who are 30s and above barely know it
