What is going on my mates!
Today we will be talking about why pop punk sucks | or rather why people think pop punk sucks + whether or not that's a bad thing + how it can improve
It's kinda hard to go through life without hearing a pop punk song, especially if you grew up in the late 90's early 2000's when bands like blink-182, Green Day, Sum 41, and all those types of bands were poppin. It was on the radio, the mall, it was hard to evade.
These days pop punk isn't so popular commercially but is for sure kept alive by acts like The Story So Far, Neck Deep, Real Friends, The Wonder Years, Knuckle Puck, you know the bands I'm talking about.
While I do offer some criticism towards the genre, I'll always love it and end the video on a high note. Watch till the end. I usually don't say that, but just do it this once with this video, per my request. Love you even if you don't.
Thank you for all the immense support lately, it never goes unnoticed.
Best,
Nate
And now.. it's time for the feature presentation you've been waiting for: Why Pop Punk Sucks

Pop punk mainly consists of annoying fans who have zero personality, dress sense or taste. The music itself is oversaturated, whiney, repetitive, nasaly and cliche. It's no surprise the aforementioned fanbase like this typical middle of the road cock rock. And tbh, from my experience it tends to be emos, jocks, lesbians and peoppe who aspire to be the latter or the former who listen to it I.e. the worst. The more power to you for liking it but aside from the douche taint and teenage angst, at it's very core, pop punk tends to just be generic these days. I could at least kinda respect old stuff for being somewhat original but not this cesspit.

@dekaiaverett3265
@dekaiaverett3265 4 жыл бұрын
Jake Charles I’m not sure if you knew this but music genres are not decided by the popularity of the music but instead decided by the sound of the music. Punk rock fans have a tendency to reject anything remotely catchy or commercial when bands like The Ramones where literally directly influenced by bubblegum pop and attempted to emulate it in their music. I don’t believe you have to be a “punk” band to be a pop punk band. At the end of the day all pop punk is is music that takes the general speed and punk like energy/guitar work but with a stronger sense of pop based melody and a focus on pop song writing.

Not many people realise how diverse "Pop Punk" actually is. I'm actually quite surprised you put Screeching Weasel in between Green Day and Offspring. Sadly in terms of influence, kids couldn't care less what the Weasels did. Personally, I think the new generation of Pop Punk bands (2010 Onwards) tend to lean towards "Emo", as opposed to the traditional "Skate Punk" style pioneered by the Weasels, The Descendents, The Parasites, The Queers, early Green Day & Blink, etc. As for the "Power Pop" bit, bands like The Exploding Hearts, The Marked Men, The Biters, or The CRY! were the only ones to fit the description accurately in more recent years. Taking their "Pop" from 50s and 60s Pop and Doo Wop, and combining it with the aggression of Punk and the Mod Revivalists from the late 70s.

Thanks for the suggestions on the "Power Pop" bands. They all feel like a throwback to what I consider 70s era "Pop Punk" or even just good old rock. Reminds me of bands like Buzzcocks, the Kinks, Suzie Quatro, the NY Dolls, Joe Jackson, the Replacements, etc. I like them!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. To me, any so-called "pop-punk" released 2005 and later (Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, Paramore, etc.) sounds like and could be better described as emo/alternative than anything else. I think it's weird, laughable, and downright dishonest to suggest otherwise. This may be a bold statement, but to me, you can't have songs that are mostly in a minor key, dark/angsty/emo/misanthropic/nihilistic lyrics, gloomy vibes, Drop D/Db/C tuned guitars, half tempo drums, heavy chugging breakdowns and still be considered "pop-punk". It just becomes something else entirely from the happy, major key, lyrics about high school/girlfriends/skateboarding, etc., standard tuned guitars, punchy double or triple tempo drum beats (to me, "true" pop-punk) of the 90s and early 00s. You could say that the genre as a whole has shifted in this direction. You could even say that the true pop-punk bands (by my definition) from the 90s-early 00s themselves have also drifted in the emo/alternative/post-hardcore/metalcore/crabcore (or as one commenter put it: "punk these days is just just metal-lite.") direction over time. Fair enough. But at least call it what it is and not equivocate it with something that is vastly different.

Yeah, what was coined "pop punk" all the way through the mid to late 90s -- things like Screeching Weasel, the Queers, etc. were a lot different than what came later. Once things had moved on to bands like Sum 41, New Found Glory, and everything after that, some of us had already moved on to stuff like the garage rock revival bands with more overt 50s/60s influences that were coming out of places like Crypt Records, Rip Off Records, and Sympathy for the Record Industry (just to name a couple), and discovering the 1960s punk influences through things like the Nuggets / Back from the Grave / Pebbles comps. Even one of the groups you mentioned, the Marked Men, sprung from the ashes of a more garage-y band, the Reds. Power Pop bands around the same time were along the lines of groups like the Briefs and FM Knives, though I'm sure there are some bands that are more poppy than those that came around a little later.

Before I watch this, I'm posting my guess. A lot of people hate pop punk because it's an oxymoron. Gotta say, the note at the end about the genre meshing well with other sounds is a really good point and I think its starting to become realised. Love it or hate it, we all know about MGK's venture into pop punk (personally think its sick but that's just an opinion) and it's sort of acted like a catalyst for other artists to move into it. Mostly the emo/pop rap artists like iann dior and trippie redd are starting to blend their sounds with it and poorstacy adds an alternative twist with yungblud blending his stylised sound too. The man at the centre of this? Travis Barker. In conclusion, Travis Barker is singlehandedly reviving pop punk.

Plus his lyrics and the topics he sings about nowadays are way more mature and thought out than most of their peers.

I grew up in a black neighborhood in southern Georgia and moved to suburban atlanta in 2001 and i was blown away by how big pop punk was there. It was huge at my high school and it meant nothing to me. But now after nearly 20 years since graduation i find that even though that music meant nothing to me, it matters to me that it mattered to the people around me. Would love to dig into it but im not sure where to start nor am i sure ill ever give this stuff a second listen but im still a physical media guy so if i get into it im buying

Whoa. This video is awesome. I've definitely branched off into different musical tastes as I've gotten close to 30, but I still find myself coming back to pop punk every once in a while. I could have a myriad of ideas as to why that is (some of which you mentioned), but I think that aside from plain nostalgia, the simplicity which so often gets ridiculed is a big part of what brings me back. Like you also pointed out, I'm really liking some of the newer bands out there that are taking pop punk elements and mixing in other things from either existing genres (like Tiny Moving Parts or Trash Boat's newer songs) or things that I haven't even heard before. Either way, loved the subject matter, information presentation, and general quality of this video. Great job!

I had the same exact situation as you mentioned at around seventh minute, I realised that pop punk was the foundation for my future music taste. Various pop punk songs were included in video games I played from mid2000s and thats how it all started. The simplicity and joy that this genre conveys is so appealing for a young kid who can later dive deeper into more alternative music. Now I’m so thankful to pop punk for doing this to me and still making me excited while listening to this shit as if i was 8yo. Thanks for making this video, this topic has always been on my mind; cheers and defend pop punk xDDDD

The point about pop punk kind of being a "starting" genre is especially true with me. Now being in my early twenties, I pretty much listen to all types of music now. Call me lame but I recently have been really getting into Taylor Swift lol. But I will always unashamedly defend pop punk and it is still my favorite genre of music lol. Also on a side note, I think the band Belmont has huge potential to be a big name in pop punk in the future. Literally every song on their debut album is fire. They have the classic pop punk sound but with more energy and and their own twist that just works. Plus from what I've seen they all seem like genuinely cool dudes that you would want to hang out with.

You gotta look at this from an ACTUAL punk rockers view. I’m not talking Blink 182, I’m talking about Dead Kennedy’s, Black Flag, Minor Threat, and other great bands from the 80s. If you take a fan of THAT music and see them react to their favorite genre get degraded into doopy love songs or songs about sadness when it used to be “Fuck the Government” and “Destroy Everything,” then you can see why they would get upset. Good video. But I think insulting them and not taking these bands seriously kind of misses the point.
