How is Windows on an M2 Mac so fast?!

See how fast ARM verison of Windows 11 running in Parallels on a 16" MacBook Pro is. It is a beast. Magically Instantly fast in some cases, I don't understand how it works :) We are comparing Parallels to VMWare Fusion on the Intel Mac.
The 16" MBP is running the M2 Max Apple Silicon chip.
The 2019 MBP 16" is the Intel i9 8 core 2.3GHz, Radeon Pro 5500M 8GB
Both machines are 32GB Ram

I would have liked to see both machines running on AC power and both running the same version of Parallels. Intel machines run much slower on battery power no matter what settings you have. I have noticed that on my MBP16 i9 and this issue has been around since 2006 when Apple switched to Intel processors. M1/M2 processors don’t have this issue. Also VMWare Fusion is much slower than Parallels. I have them both on my MBP16-i9 and Windows applications (especially games and those that use DirectX) run 2 to 6 times faster using Parallels than using VMWare Fusion and loading of Windows in Parallels is about 4 to 5 times faster than on VMWare Fusion. I hope you will do a comparison that is fair in a future video and use AC power as well as the same version of Parallels.

Is there any chance you could do another test on some other softwares like cad stuff?

Sadly I've now sold the intel MBP now, so only got the m2. SketchUp doesn't work very well, I had to switch it to run the intel version through rosetta to make it launch. Then it works, but isn't lightning quick. No doubt they'll release a fix for the m2, maybe it works fine on the m1

@@squircle-design ahh okay fair. Have you tried any softwares like solidworks or Creo?

@@SaberShorts No sorry I haven't, the key thing is are can they run natively on m2 yet or not? if so, then chances are they will be awesome. If not then running the intel version through rosetta will be roughly the same as an intel mac, maybe a fraction faster.

I think it's nothing about the processor, it's about the different SSD speed between them, m2 MAC's SSD is way more faster than the old MAC, it's base on PCIE 4.0 bus, up to 8000MB/s

...or, run linux (however u can - emulated vs boot loader choosing) on both... Your app-specifice is pretty narrow. I'd never run an emulated os to do timing critical apps, like audio production apps.

Why not just use Bootcamp on the Intel machine and compare? That would have been more enlightening.

Bootcamp is not virtualisation, that's running Windows natively. The m1 and m2 can't do bootcamp or run windows natively, yet. Also it's a huge difference rebooting the machine into a different OS. You do get much better performance of course, so for any sort of gaming that is the best thing to do. But it's not an option for the m1/m2. And it's not exactly convenient. Cheers!

Could you please conpare the bootcamp performance to the apple silicon virtualization performance? I haven’t seen a video like this

Unfortunately I don’t have the i9 laptop any more to test, but no doubt you can find benchmark results for boot camp and the i9 online somewhere vs the m2

It works 'cuz Apple has decades of experience with emulation & transitioning CPUs & OSs. Killer app? VMs.... Go M series!

Yeah doesn't seem the fairest test in the world but the fact you have a 32bit Intel app working is useful. Something I never got a answer about elsewhere either.

Yeah you wouldn’t even know it’s not an intel machine!

This isnt a fair test. you're using different virtualization software. For all we know performance is almost identical on the same software.

Yip, it's completely unfair :) I think Parallels has got suspending nailed compared to vmware
