The Yakuza/Like a Dragon games have an incredible presentation and style that makes playing and experiencing them feel as satisfying as popping bubble wrap. Probably because you are popping skulls (in game) in the same way. And ya just can’t help but feel good after that (in real life).

The “easy to play hard to master” aspect of combat really gives Yakuza strength. If you’re not good at the combat, heat actions do high damage, look brutal, and pretty easy to pull off. If you’re into tech like me, you got juggles, wallbounding, combos, etc. It’s as braindead or impossible as you make it for yourself. Plus everyone loves a good Essence of Sugarcoating

One thing I'd like to mention is the uniqueness of ennemy models; you can easily tell which faction is which through their clothing style, their color schemes, the fabric of their clothing (In Y7, for example, Seiryu Clan wears navy blue while Omi Alliance mostly wears green, RK in Lost Judgment has a large amount of street clothing...) Another thing, giving a japanese family name to each of your encounter helps humanize them, and I feel so powerful and so entertained when I tell myself I could beat down a real person that's just a punk to me

Oh my god, this explains so much about why I love the feel of these games. Especially the part about enemy reactions. I've always loved all of Yagami's attacks which launched people in the air but I didn't really understand why. I mean they're quick jabs and kicks, basically. But the way they send a man into the sky in a split second, and the way they just stay still in the air for a second at the top of their arc is so satisfying.

I swear to GOD, Yakuza's combat is single handedly one of the best things i have ever experienced in my life, the sheer brutality, the over top action and the surprisingly deep complexity of its mechanics is what got me hooked since i started playing 0 and if it wasnt for that i probably would have dropped the series alltogether. Im already at my no damage hardcore phase and literally all i do is repeat climax battles, over and over and over again because i just cant get tired of the gameplay. Sometimes however i feel like there is still some untapped potential that either RGG doesnt want to do it, or they havent figured it out yet, cause i genuinely believe a game like Yakuza or Judgment could be similar to DMC or ULTRAKILL in terms of pure, unadulterated STYLISH combat and character driven action, focused less on telling a story and more about good old ass kicking (dont get me wrong, i do like Yakuza's story) I think at this point im probably asking for an entirely different game and not really a Yakuza game, but at the same time i just wasnt able to find something that gets even close to the brutality of an RGG game. Fuck it, if i cant find it, then i will make the game myself.

i think the gameplay is very connected to to the different technological advances over the years. the ps2 enabled more realistic models, animations and expressions, which wouldnt be possible if yakuza 1 released on the ps1. the first two games also had to be very concious of the camera considering the big world and locked camera. this continued on to yakuza 3 on the ps3, in which they could afford even better expressions. since then, theyve just gotten better at making things look cool.

beat it and did all the substories + amon right before ishin released and i agree, a lot of the side content is rough i won't lie, cabaret was nice but debt grinding ruined it and overall it was a lot better in 0 and K2, other than that i only really liked clinic ken and some of the tournaments, but the combat was fun and i love the soundtrack, the juggles you can do in that game are almost as good as lost judgment, LJ just takes the cake for having style switching (and having more fun stuff to do + being less grindy than lost paradise)

The comparison to COD was great because I’ve been saying the same thing! Some of the unarmed takedowns in MW2 (2022) are pretty cool but the vast majority of those executions look terrible in comparison to Yakuza heat actions, even though RGG Studio is like a speck of dust in comparison to the gargantuan size of Activision and the COD studios. Great video, King. I think the big problem with Modern Warfare executions is that they are third person executions in a first person game. Meanwhile, heat actions are from the same camera perspective as the rest of the game. Hell, Black Ops Cold War had first person executions, so I wonder why they could not just do the same in Modern Warfare as well.

One honorable mention I'd like to slide in is the Japanese PSP exclusive spin off title, Kurohyou. Or Yakuza Black Panther. A game that turns more of the series regular laid out rules on it's head with Ukyo Tatsuya that creates a different form of satisfaction. Not only are there a bunch of fighting styles that can be swapped out, or hell, mixed and matched with a specific style, but there's a crap ton of heat actions to go with it. This time around there's little to no slow motion, but makes up with some quick and snappy fighting moves that are pulled off. Slow motion only occurs when the game wants to tell you that the very next move that's about to be done is going to HURT. Honestly, despite limited by the PSP, it's a pretty solid game that managed to get a No Damage community.

How did you change the background in the mahjong mini game? Was it just amazing editing or can you actually change the background?

The game is surprisingly well optimized and looks pretty good even on low settings. I was surprised how well the Like a Dragon ran on my 5 years old laptop mx150 i5-8250u so I bought the Yakuza 0 and now will play all the games.

I was scrolling through the ps catalog a few months back and saw yakuza 0, went on youtube saw a couple of videos and said fuck it, im not losing nothing just play 5 or 10 hours of this goofy game and forget about it after. And man I couldn't be more wrong, fast-forward to today i got every yakuza/judgment platinum except of ishin couldn't afford that one, and I cant tell you how much love I have for this franchise.

I bought Yakuza Like a Dragon back when it was part of ps plus, got it for free, so of course I bought it. Even if it wasn't TRUE Yakuza game, I really came to like it's ridiculous combat, moments and all other obscure things that game throws at you. And then I went to try previous games, and i came to like them too, Yakuza 0 i still mt second fave game from the franchise.

yakuza combat is so satisfying is actually due to the uh- hydrodynamic dimensional structural power of saying kiryu doesn’t kill, yeah what I just said is the truth I swear

It also comes down to the Yakuza team(s) influences. They seem to have been equally influenced by shonen fight manga, pro wrestling, and a zillion martial arts movies which had given the animators a great understanding of what makes an attack, its animations, and the camera angles needed to sell it. Western devs are usually less exposed to the manga/anime element, and martial arts movies are a dying thing, so they’re less able to identify the awesomeness of street violence anymore.
