I think Jacob Collier is an incredible musician, but trying to learn from him often times feels useless. He has perfect pitch as well as clearly an innate sense of audiation, that most people don't have access to.

As a guitarist who has recently "got my ear in" I can comfortably say that it's the single most satisfying and important aspect of playing any instrument. Some people are just born with it, that's what we call a musical genius, it took me 15 years! If you're a struggling musician I would highly recommend doing ear training above all else, providing you have the basics down.

Not necessarily playing right away what you hear, but at the very least, having good relative pitch. Having that understanding of chord relationships, and most importantly, having an intuitive grasp in it as you apply it to your instrument is such an important aspect in playing music that you are then able to essentially “improvise, adapt, and overcome” different musical scenarios that you come across. Edit: i hope this makes sense lol
@wilko871
@wilko871 2 жыл бұрын
@@dangdrjay3011 Getting your ear in just means that when you hear something you can immediately visualise how that may translate to the instrument. Or a good example would be recognising intervals too, so I can recognise a flat 3rd and make an assumption that we are in a minor key. It's about being able to paint a picture of the music in your mind, then copy it onto the canvas. It doesn't always come out perfectly, but then you can make minor tweaks.

I accidentally learnt how to learn songs by “ear” by doing this. Even after 5 years of learning guitar, I have never been able to improve my ears. That was until I started humming melodies that are replaying in my head. Through trial and error, I would play a section of song on my phone, pause it, recall the song in my head until it loops, and then hum out the song until it matches with the melody in my head. Afterwards on my guitar, I would try and find each note one by one while continuously humming that one note till I find it on the guitar. I would then hen put together all the notes i found and I was able to play the melody on the guitar. I did this over and over again with various different songs and my ears improved a lot in a short period of time. All within a month.

Basically how I've learned most of the shit I know on guitar, if shit gets too technical for me to find out by ear, I research a little through tablature and what not. One of the best yet hardest ways to learn guitar/bass, cuz its not something you can do in an instant (bass may be easier tho) but rather something you have to train yourself to get used to. Obviously it helps having a general idea where certain notes / sounds are on the fretboard.

If you really understood music theoretically and or had perfect pitch, you will learn to play any instrument much faster. If you can hear the distance between notes and understand rythm, you can come up with melodies in your head and find the notes. I used an ear trainer app and learned a few scales and I could much easier work out a melody on the piano. So rather than practice exercises for muscle memory I would defo train my ears and learn theory first.

I think he's saying any instrument can express your inner voice in your head without restricting yourself to scales or techniques if you first create the melodic lines or song first from your head and then apply it to the bass instead of starting with scales or techniques because everyone innately has a song in their head Dann Huff said that once in an interview on how to write a guitar solo

The only string instrument I have is a ukulele and I have no idea how to actually play it, so I just take what I hear and whistle it until I find the right notes. It's really helpful when you wanna play random songs but no one has any charts for it

Playing by ear. Most people think about piano but it applies to a lot of instruments

This is exactly how I learned. Started by trying to find guitar chords but I can only hear the bass. Ended up learning bass in addition to learning guitars. 😂

This reminds me of two things: 1. My college humanities teacher, the wonderful Donald Gochberg, telling us the best way to learn a language was to read - line by line - the original and the translation. Yeah, right. 2. Dylan Thomas’s line in A Child’s Christmas in Wales: “O, easy for Leonardo!”
