in my understanding, 生き甲斐 = big happiness i think it's a big happiness because those people have a desired life target to motivate their daily life. and it's happy to do what they want everyday unlike the souless working slave like many japanese people. sometimes, ikigai is little quite hard to achieve. therefore, i prefer shoukakkou (小確幸 = 小さいけれども、確かな幸福 small but certain happiness) for example, having delicious dinner after a busy day, reading a book during a relaxing weekend, having a walk in beautiful garden after meal, can be considered as shoukakkou. agree with Sena, many Japanese dont practice ikigai in their daily life. however, i think japanese are quite good at finding shoukakkou. during childhood, happiness are so simple. when people grown up, being simple is happiness.

Funny how the environment around us nowadays would influence us to search for the answer to life, when in reality, there isn't really such a thing from an objective standpoint. We can only find the true meaning of our own lives from within. It's important to be grateful for the life we have and to treat every day as a gift. At the end, Ikigai is you, just you, the real you. Ikigai is the mirror of yourself, of what you are, of what you think, of what your goals are in your life... Ikigai must be our dream in the drawer to be happy for real! Really, thanks a lot Sena... I follow every video you post , I listen your words so exsplained in a simple way for me and I can understand your speech, I share most of your perspectives in my life too. Can I make some requests?... If it is possible, can you consider a deepening about your relationship with each member of your family?... with your partner (if you have one)?... with your dearest friends?... with your colleagues?... with your loneliness?... with your religion (if you have one)?... How do you manage your lifestyle with them? Thanks again Sena and greetings from the South of Italy.

Thank you so much for watching this video! I believe it's a good way to integrate vocation with the concept of Ikigai as long as it works for you and doesn't stress you out but I don't want people to think that we can't have "Ikigai" unless it's related to vocation or profession. I guess I just want to create awareness that we don't have to take things so seriously all the time lol

Woah. I am so glad I found this video! Have been studying ikigai for the better part of a decade but no one explained the concept of having multiple ikigai. I love that! Plus, here in the states most everyone considers your financial aspect as part of why you are. So it just seemed logical to have the money part of the diagram there. If you take that out, it is much more spiritual. Thank you for sharing. Always appreciate when something can shift my paradigm. Thank you!

Another stellar job. Thank you for helping me discover that I have been living Ikigai my whole life. My only disagreement with you, Sena, is that if you find a career that you LOVE (teaching for me), profession, vocation, what you can do for other people actually meld beautifully into one's inner being and promote self-awareness and self-love. Therefore, it is imperative to find your life's work and perform to the best of your ability. Every other thought of yours is right on point. I'm looking forward to your next topic of discussion 🔜 .

Great video, Sena. I know lots of people (much older than you) who have no idea of who they are, working night and day for things they don't actually matter. 'Know yourself', as the classic said. Simplicity will help you (us) a lot. Go for the things and the people that you really love. Good luck on your way to a happy and meaningful life.

I've read the book a while ago, from a "European Perspective", and while I was wondering if it really captures the concept from a Japanese perspective, I actually thought it's probably pretty much what you are saying here. Also, honestly, I think a big part of Western books about ikigai, wabi - sabi, and whatnot, is commerce, in part exist and are successful, because they pick something that you can slap a nice exotic label on and sell something as new to people elsewhere, which actually does exist, and often pretty much always existed, where they are just the same. Taking "ikigai" as the example, I can't really see a big difference to "raison d'être" in French, "purpose in life" in English, or let's take "Lebenssinn", or "Lebensinhalt" in German, as it's just 1 word too, and we even have 2 of them, which both can mean exactly what ikigai, as you describe it, does. That doesn't mean it's *just* commerce, don't get me wrong, I'm sure there still are authors who don't just study Amazon bestseller lists and suggestions for what kind of book might do well (which, however, is done quite a lot nowadays) but write for the sake of writing, to share with others, to spread ideas, to follow their own ikigai. ... ;) and often, it is and has to be (even authors need to eat) a mix of it all, of course. And it's always interesting, and often educational to read or listen to something from the point of view of someone who grew up in a different culture, country, upbringing, ... There are differences, big or subtle, and different angles that people see or mention, which is why I was hesitant to read that book, after noticing that the authors' names weren't as Japanese as the title. But it can be also interesting to read a book on ikigai from a Western perspective, a book on Western history from an Asian perspective, etc. While we are all human beings and somewhat similar in many regards, there are differences. Although ... often, I think, those differences aren't necessarily linked as much to which country we live or grew up in, as we often tend to think. Minimalists exist inside and outside of Japan, as well as people with ikigai, however they may call it. For a person who is a minimalist and aware of, and has, ikigai, it might be much easier to communicate and get along with someone like that from a different culture than with someone who grew up in the same neighbourhood and under very similar circumstances. But I didn't actually want to write a book here 笑 just wanted to say thanks for sharing your perspective on ikigai, sorry, that's a hellishly long YT comment. I hope you have, or will soon have, at least one ikigai, you, whoever read this far :)

Hi Sena ! I think this is the first comment I sincerely ever left on KZfaq. I recently discovered your videos by KZfaq suggestions. At first, I was more like "interesting, but it is merely one youtuber among others talking about life". But I saw another video, then another, and then saw all the videos from your start to now, and I relate so very much on your point on view about simple life, the existencial crisis you had, the pursuit of something better and most importantly personal, the change from your early years to who you become now....so interesting ! I am quite older than you I think (35) but although I sometimes still have no idea of how I'll manage my life and my place within society, I also am happy and grateful, and feel strong about having my own beliefs I can work for and pursue. And your recent videos share many thoughts about this that calm my mind whenever doubts come in. All the best to you, and can't wait for the next videos :)

Thanks for posting this video Sena and I like the analogy of paying it forward. I feel the same as you in that I always felt like an outsider even within my family and was more ambitious than all my friends, in retrospect I was just trying to find a society and values which fit my outlook on life better. Despite having a useful degree in a capitalist societyg gaining meaning from work is getting harder to come by, therefore you must have other hobbies to concentrate on. I cannot imagine adjusting from Japanese culture to that of NZ or west, it is totally different. I look at life like a battery if you take risks, travel and broden your horizons you charge that battery so that when shit happens you have already experience something worse so it doesn't seem as bad. On the other hand if you don't travel and lead a local life the battery is not as charged and when change occurs (which it will) you are less able to handle it. This is an argument for both life purpose (ikigai?) and minimalism, since if you travel it's hard to take lots of material items. Also I studied my ancestors the ones that moved abroad and were more successful lived much longer lives so perhaps its more healthy also.

Your story and mine share some similarities. I moved away from home at 14 to work on my Career. I am nearing retirement soon; and I have become sort of a Loner. I am quite happy, but I have felt a little guilty because I am not working at it, and I feel like I should have ambition. I have worried that when I retire, I will feel even more guilty. Your talk made me think that maybe doing simple things I like is a perfectly acceptable goal, and I don't necessarily need a to find a new "job", new people, more stuff, publicly-lauded goals. If I'm happy, probably I'm lucky and it is "enough".

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I also did not really connect with the Ikigai diagram for same reasons. I think it is easy to fall into the trap that you are cannot be satisfied unless you have a job that you are super passionate about, for example. Minimalism has taught me that it is sometimes better to have just enough. A job can be just a job that is there to support your basic needs and give you the freedom to do other things in life that you love.
