The Austin Powers in Goldmember opening scene is the definition of a show-stopper. From the star-studded cameos like Tom Cruise, Steven Spielberg, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Danny DeVito to the over-the-top action filmmaking - it is a sight to behold. But how did director Jay Roach pull this scene off?
In this video, we partner with Sundance Collab and Jay Roach to walk us through the filmmaking process behind creating the Austin Powers 3 opening sequence - and we’ll be taking a look at never-before-seen Austin Powers: Goldmember storyboards as we do it. For the Austin Powers in Goldmember opening scene, Jay Roach discusses how he balanced tone and contrast between each segment. Buckle your belts for some very groovy filmmaking theory baby, yeah!
For Austin Powers 3, the filmmakers really had to step it up, starting with a hilariously ridiculous action sequence - which, as Roach explains, would not have been possible without “pure preparation” that starts with storyboarding and directing considerations for tone and contrast.
Then the Austin Powers in Goldmember intro breaks the 4th wall and turns into a Hollywood musical and that iconic Austin Powers dance. The different modes of comedy on display during the Austin Powers in Goldmember opening scene is a masterclass in directing comedy, action, and tone.
You might not have the budget (or Tom Cruise) to pull off the intro to your next film, but the lessons here still apply - be prepared, make a storyboard, and approach each scene as if it were as bold and dynamic as the Austin Powers in Goldmember opening scene. For more, including the entire collection of Austin Powers storyboards, follow the link to our blog.

Except in F&F the shooter would land back into the car, think he's won and then realize there's a tank coming right at him, so he corners the car off a cliff and jumps out, grabbing onto a speed boat with one finger before pulling himself up and beating the pulp out of the speed boat pilot.

Yes, brilliant sequence, but one thing always struck me. The radio signals fade out way too fast. By the time the panning-out camera gets to Saturn, we're all the way back to Dean Marin singing Volare in the 1960s, whereas the premise of the movie was that a TV signal from 1936 had gotten all the way from Earth to Vega and back again.

This is absolutely amazing. I never missed an Austin Powers movie in the cinema. You did have to re-watch it again several times to get all the laughs, as it's just one after the other!

The Temple of Doom “Anything Goes” opening is pretty incredible and unlike anything else in the Indiana Jones series. The Tour Da France dream sequence transitioning to the Rube Goldberg breakfast machine is a pretty great intro in Pee-Wee’s big adventure is pretty amazing as well. I’m all of these, the music is a huge part of the success of the scenes.

I was a lot younger when I saw Goldmember for the first time and didn’t know anything about the cast and did not want to have myself spoiled. They got me so good with Tom Cruise, was so disappointed when I saw him cause I actually thought they’d replaced Mike Myers (I see the stupidity of that thought today😅). Slight relief when DannyDeVito was shown. That was too much to be true. 😂 Thus, one of the greatest openers as it completely got me and put me on a little emotional rollercoaster. 🥳

So, Kevin "Assault" Spacey, Brittany "Oil War on Iraq" Spears, Gwyneth "Enormously overpriced vitamin pills and psuedoscience" Paltrow, and Tom "Sscientollogy" Cruise on the one hand... ... with Quincy Jones, Steven Spielberg, and Danny DeVito on the other hand... Man, the cameo choices is literally the only thing that didn't go perfectly in this greatest of all-time opening, but man, 4/7 is noticeably cursed territory. Thank goodness you covered your bases by literally giving 4 roles to Mike Myers.

Here's a little tidbit that many don't know. Jay Roach's wife is singer Susanna Hoffs, of Bangles fame. She, along with Mike Myers and Matthew Sweet formed the band "Ming Tea", taking on 60s characters and names. Sweet was Sid Belvedere, Hoffs was Gillian Shagwell, and Myers was Austin Powers. From there, Myers got the idea of making the movie with Hoffs hubby Jay Roach as director. In the first film, Ming Tea sang the song "BBC", and in the third "Daddy Wasn't There". In the first, in the scene at Alotta Fagina's apartment, Hoffs sings the Bacharach song "The Look of Love", and absolutely nails it (available on KZfaq). In fact, Myers met Roach through Hoffs, when they were still dating and hadn't married yet. And Myers, a musician himself, owns a Rickenbacker 350 Susanna Hoffs Limited Edition electric guitar.
