As much of a masterpiece as I think JAVTM is (even by the high standards of the franchise not counting the 2010s thanks to DreamWorks having done so much wrong (with VeggieTales and their late 2010s (2015-2021) animated features), even I gotta admit, these are very valid points to keep a (charming yet) frail company like Big Idea afloat.

It's a cryin' shame what happened to Big Idea. Knowing what I know now about the production history of Jonah, the absolutely horrific state the company was in, & Phil's personal & spirtual struggles during the whole thing makes watching the behind-the-scenes featurettes for Jonah pretty heartbreaking 'cuz even though they appear to be smiley, happy, hopeful, & upbeat on-camera, to quote Larry & Mr. Lunt from the Jonah DVD commentary, "It's all a put-on. It's a sham. It's a fake." They're still incredibly nostalgic to watch, but there'll always be a depressing air about them from now on for me. With that being said, Jonah is, has been, & will always remain my favorite VeggieTales project of all time. It has a vibe like no other VT episode has. It was supposed to be this big epic blockbuster, but instead, it has this cool, unknown, indie, slightly spooky & mysterious aura about it (at least for me), & the music is absolutely _killer._ It's one of my favorite comfort movies.

I know what you mean about the spooky thing. It's been a while since I saw it but I remember how they broke down and got stranded at that arcade diner late at night (already a classic horror trope). Even once they got into the story, the pacing was just a little.. *off* throughout the movie. When Jonah would go into that weird all-white dimension - "Jonaahh..." And ofc, Nineveh was creepy. And then the cutoff ending which I can't blame them for since it's straight from the Bible lol. The music number at the end helped take the edge off though. So yeah, it was just a little off. Tldr; Fib fro Outer Space was scary, but Jonah was just weird.

I’d actually say the Lyrick lawsuit was Jonah’s fault, too. If Big Idea wasn’t so desperate for Jonah money, they might’ve been more careful around Lyrick and ended their unstable relationship more professionally, instead of jumping ship to Warner Home Video with zero notice and hoping the lack of any real contract with Lyrick will see them through.

It was a replacement for another project called “the Bob and Larry movie” where it was basically the origin of how Bob and Larry met and how they’re sentient veggies, and the movie was supposed to release on 2005. But the movie was canceled after the Big Idea’s bankruptcy and also animating humans would’ve been hard since there were supposed to be humans. I’d honestly love to see a movie about that. Prince is Egypt is a fucking masterpiece. Not religious but easily my top 3 animated movies. But I think the reason Prince of Egypt worked while Veggietales lost its identity the second Dreamworks got ahold of it is that Veggietales was an animated ministry that managed to be entertaining enough for atheists to enjoy, despite the religious aspects. Prince of Egypt is an amazing story that happened to include religious aspects. Take a second to imagine Prince of Egypt without God, replacing the plagues with an escalating slave revolt. We can debate on whether or not it would be better, but we can all agree it would still be good. You would still have a heart wrenching drama about two brothers who used to be thick as thieves being forced to be enemies because one grew and now wants to end a great evil (Let my people go!) and the other can’t escape the pressure put on him by his father even though he’s dead (I will not be the weak link!). You would still have Aaron resenting Moses for not caring about them until he realized he was only a basket ride away from the wrong end of a whip, contrasted by Miriam ready to put the past aside because he’s doing good now. You would still have Moses torn by the added suffering of innocents, particularly children, who had no control over the situation, ending in the death of his own nephew. The list goes on. Veggietales without religion would be like Sesame Street without the education. An empty shell.

It really makes me sad, actually. In fact, Phil went too far in hopes of his series becoming a phenomenon, and the entire story of VeggieTales is one of the most depressing things I've ever heard for the medium that is animation. It turned the table on Christian family programs over the years that were DTV; but Phil's dreams backfired and the Lyrick lawsuit happened, as well as his(and Mike's) brainchild taken away from him(them). No seriously, screw the lawsuit! It was the father of an overhated children's mascot like Barney's fault for suing Big Idea, who were struggling through a financial crisis before Lyrick dissolved into HiT(formerly Henson Inc Television until Jim Henson's passing then rebrand)! Still, they should be very very careful, because if you're wary of your surroundings, you'll succeed!

Cimematic animation is a very expensive and ambitious thing. Jonah should have been reformatted a two part episode. That way, Big Idea could have saved themselves a lot of trouble. Home media is a much easier market than theatrical runs, especially if you don’t have deep pockets like Disney or Dreamworks or Warner Bros. It’s sad to say that Jonah was doomed right from the start, regardless of the movie’s quality.

Sorry for a bit of spoiled alert, but I watch SaberSpark video and read Phil's book, Me, Myself, and Bob. So I pretty much know what happened to Big Idea. But I think it's a interesting topic, where a small studio known for their beloved property, takes a gamble on the movie, but many problems ahead before the movie like financial problems, a lawsuit for HIT Entertainment and poor management. It reminds me of Fleischer Studios when they make two movies to complete with Disney, but only having similar problems as Big Idea (except for the lawsuit part) and eventually collapse when Paramount brought it. So, these movies were ahead of time, and felt not ready for it. Which is ashamed that Big Idea Productions wouldn't be as big as Disney as Phil hoped for 20 years, and sell off to Classic Media, then Dreamworks Animation, then NBCUniversal.

On the topic of Jonah- our church is doing a sermon series on the minor prophets (as of 1/23/23, we are almost done. Yesterday we did Zephaniah, and we took a break for Advent.) On Nov. 13th, we studied Jonah. The week before, I asked my Pastor if he'd make reference to the VeggieTales movie in his sermon. He laughed and said he'd fit it in. Just to make sure, I text him the night before and caught up with him before church. He promised to mention it. So the sermon began, and Pastor asked: "How many of you, when you think of Jonah, think of a whale or a big fish, because as we read, Jonah was swallowed by a large fish?" Most hands went up. Then he finally said: "VeggieTales did a very popular video about Jonah many years ago. How many of you think of VeggieTales when you hear Jonah?" I put my hands over my head and clapped really loud. Pastor looked in my direction and he said: "Someone does...alright!" and he continued. After church, I went up to him and thanked him for the mention. "I hope my reaction wasn't too much, that was restraint." He laughed and said it was okay. :)

That being said, I can see why the fairy tale route wasn't popular with fans. There should've been more Bible takes to balance things out. It'd be interesting to see their take on Habakkuk along with HCA's stories like "Snow Queen" and "Little Mermaid" as Andersen's stories had religious overtones in the first place. @@JadenVonBat I personally liked the way they introduced LarryBoy in Dave and the Giant Pickle, because Larry has to wear the superhero costume to make himself think that being a superhero would make him special, only for him to learn and realize that his normal self is more special, but that he can always dress up as a superhero whenever he feels like it. As much as I enjoy The Fib from Outer Space and Rumor Weed, I sometimes feel like they should have added another 30 minutes to both of those episodes. Or maybe they should have waited on working on anything LarryBoy related until the right time to make a feature film or TV series was there.

This is a sad but cool video. Thanks for the shoutout at the beginning. With Jonah recently turning 20 years old, I figured the topic discussed here would be fitting to honor the films' anniversary. I think Jonah could’ve been better off as a direct to video feature instead, because Disney was milking out those VHS sequels two decades ago. Personally, Classic Media felt like a worthy studio to run Big Idea following the lawsuit. That was, until Dreamworks bought CM and pretty much doomed VeggieTales for the rest of history. With how Phil and Mike are no longer involved in the franchise, and that the series is most likely never gonna re-capture its former glory, would it make sense for the VeggieTales IP to just retire or be left alone? If Dreamworks or NBC/Universal doesn't know how to run a "Christian" based property, even if it wasn't VeggieTales, then why keep producing more content from there?

I’m not sure why this video crossed my home page, but the sight of it slapped me with a memory from middle school. XD There was a project in music class where we got to pick any (appropriate) song we wanted to I guess analyze somehow, I honestly can’t remember what the project exactly was, and I don’t remember what song I chose to do, but I *do* remember one of my friends chose In The Belly Of The Whale from Jonah: A VeggieTales movie. I didn’t watch much VeggieTales as a kid, so I have no idea why that memory is so strongly implanted in my brain. Obviously, I had to look the song up to see if it was what I was thinking about, and lemme tell you, that’s going to be stuck in my head all week while I have an existential crisis over how long ago middle school was. And it’s all your fault for making this video. Thanks. XD

I kinda believe that some "art" belongs only on one, maybe two mediums and trying to stray out of those things can potentially fall flat. Veggietales really shined on the small screen. Who is going to the theater, spending the $10 per person, to watch low detail CGI groceries do roleplay? I was a fan of everything before Jonah and I wasn't even interested in Jonah for that reason. Also they were trying to make franchises off of brilliant one-offs like the Pirates who don't do anything, Larryboy, etc. I'm now kinda surprised they didn't try a show about Larry's Lips or the adventures of the USS Apple Pies.
