@@rahultamang2519 I respect your opinion. If you read my comment carefully, with understanding, I said "search more about a culture before they make a mockery out of it". I'm not saying the whole Korean country must research about all the cultures of the world , that is impossible and absurd. What I am saying is that BEFORE they decide to imitate a culture, the LEAST they could do is do some research about that culture so they could approach it with more understanding and respect. If they don't want to research about it, then they should refrain from imitating and appropriating it. For example, before visiting Korea, I researched, "what to do in Korea, what not to do in Korea, the do's and don't when you are in Korea, 50 things you need to know before visiting Korea, the important things I need to know, what is considered disrespectful in Korea, what is the Korean culture like, etc." This was not because I was bored, this was because I didn't want to get there and offend anyone. I hope you will understand my comment better now. Also I understand that you are mad, but disrespecting one race/culture just to get your point across is rude and disrespectful.

As an half Indian and korean i think its bad of idols to do this,but do you know the situation of us here,many Indians disrespect us and use their culture or language to shame us,many westerners blame us for the act of any other Asian countries,and then call us racists,everyone mocks us for our way of looking,idols and their company's have apologized for doing all the bad reputations of India's unique country but the news hasn't spread and people still hate them for doing their irresponsible actions,we do not know much about india because there is no good representation of you're nice culture and yes ik there is the internet,we want to know to get the country more but who is giving us a chance,and I'm disliking the people who did in a disrespectful way especially Henry,he is NOT popular in your country because its seen that he is not over here,I'm very sorry if I offended anyone but please consider both the sides,every person has a flaw and did a very bad thing atleast once in their life,they've apologized right?and for a fact India isn't seen as a bad item in kr,its a very beautiful and elegant country,I like it and many others too,please don't get wrong intentions,sorry but I'll just add a little more, the 'horrible ignorrant dance' you call,its a very bad representation of your culture all over the world and no one has set it right so ofcourse we do the same thing too,we then got to know that its disrespecting and we apologized too,we didn't know the fact as there no people correcting the way of its been set about your culture all over the world,I get that we were irresponsible but its been the same way,we know now

So people can now only use dance moves from their own race? That doesn't even make any sense. According to your own logic No One is ever allowed to dress in American fashion or do American style music or dances because it's cultural appropriation. According to your logic only Americans are allowed to make pop music and rock music and rap music and only Americans are allowed to wear tennis shoes and high heels. According to you everyone is only allowed to dress in fashions that originated in their country and no other way. Do you see how ridiculous you sound now? People have been taking American culture and water unit down and adding their own unique twists to it for decades and decades. But according to you that's wrong. People of color have invented some of the best and most popular dance moves of all time and always have. Like I'm sure I don't need to mention all the dance crazes popular throughout the years and on TikTok, like Gangnam style, Dougie, Soulja boy, I could go on and on and on. By your logic only the race of the inventor can use those dance moves and no one else. I understand about not wearing traditional outfits from a culture that isn't your own. But just using dance moves that originated in India does not cultural appropriation make. Even using religious symbols that aren't your own in music and art is widespread. Christianity is treated incredibly disrespectfully in tons of art and tons of music videos and by tons of different artists and bands but no one gives a s*** about that and that religion originated in the Middle East. So your point makes no sense and comes across as pretty hypocritical. Also calling things cultural appropriation that aren't cheapens the term and is the reason why people don't take it seriously because people are calling the stupidest things cultural appropriation now.

@@crazycat4839 yes. It was overall a wonderful experience in my uni. But there were also people who mock our culture. For eg, Chinese girls are afraid of Indian boys because they think we are rapists (because of Nirbhaya issue). They think since we eat curry, we have never had anything healthy. (BTW, most cases in my hospital were food poisoning, binge drinking, anorexia). During the time we lived in China, most Indian girls wore salwar kameez (chudidhar) to class. Some of the Chinese old/middle age people openly mocked them. From our perspective, Chinese girls who wear shorts in -8 degree Celsius was bit off. But this happens not only one way. Most of my friends thinks Chinese girls cannot be trusted in a relationship. Most of the stories we heard were Chinese men having a lot of mistresses. Also, Chinese girls often go on dates with multiple men at a time and then chose the best. (Not my opinion. From one of the Chinese female friends). Chinese people also never help a stranger in need. Many times, we saw people in accident gets unattended. If this happened in a rural area, we can understand that people were afraid of legal side. (Sometimes happen in India). But it happens on a metropolitan city on broad daylight and infront of 20-30 people and they don't give a ****. So, just like Chinese having 'issues' with Indians, we also have same feeling for few of them. Edit: Koreans , Japanese students also have same opinion on India. From my experience in University, Indians, Pakistanis, students from Islamic countries were only people who had a habit of taking shower everyday. Most of the others just put on makeup. It's a bit turn off for me. Also racial discrimination is an issue in china.

I think the homogeneous country is a valid explanation (not justification) despite it being 2020. I'm not saying it's okay for them to continue this way. What I feel is that homogeneous countries are breeding grounds for lack of understanding about other cultures. It's easy to say that "it's 2020 and they should know better", but this goes deep into their social norms, and coupled with the homogeneous country factor, there's no real impact on them when they get criticized for racism and cultural appropriation. That's one reason why they continue being the way they are. However, I think there's also an increasing trend of awareness and efforts to correct some of these issues, albeit less obvious. The problem is that this change of mindset will take a very long time to achieve, especially since kpop has really only gone global in the recent years. This makes Korea look very backwards compared to several other countries (which have more diverse demographics and thus more incentive to learn).

Well, pop music had a desiboo phase from 2010-2015... So Lee Hyori probably just jumped on the trend train by selena iggy and co. Doesn't excuse her lack of research though, I was broken when i watched that stage. Honestly, I sometimes feel ashamed of supporting her, but I was a big fan since 2009 so it's hard, as i love her personality and I'm sure shes grown as a person (she was in her 20s, im sure she's mature now). I promised myself that I would never watch another solo stage of hers and would not suppoet her music since then. I do watch her in variety shows. She's one of the main feminists in SoKorea, and an inspiration to so many. But Lee Hyori as a musician is dead to me.

@Legolaslegs
@Legolaslegs 3 жыл бұрын
The biggest issue is not the Kpop companies or idols doing offensive acts, but their delusional fans coming in support for literally everything. The desensitization is so severe that it's worrying. Cultural appreciation is acceptable when the said group actively and openly talks about their interest in a culture and actually takes steps in being educated; I'll wholeheartedly accept that. Instead, all fans assume that whatever their faves do have to be cultural appreciation because their faves can't possibly be problematic. I mean, your idols are human beings and bound to make mistakes. And the only way they can learn is by being made aware of their errors and not being protected. Mind you, I am not in favour of cancelling. But trying to help in a positive manner.

THEY ALL WERE NICE FOR BASIC COURTESY. and after that, the amount of racism my mom endured was unbelievable. She lived in both Japan and Korea and she wears sarees occasionally and she said the Japanese would be polite, express their curiosity in a healthy way, smile more often when asking questions about culture and when she did the same in Seoul she was shamed mercilessly. People laughed, one of them on subways started dancing tunak tunak shit with hand gestures with a group of friends and these older ladies didn't give a seat. And she experienced a heart breaking incident: there was a Korean guy in their study group who has this whole "Im brainy and i know what I'm talking about" kind and he was loudly asking what my mom's caste is and she politely corrected him saying it's inappropriate. so he googled her surname and for like 10 mins he went to talk about the age-old caste division in India and what my mom's ancestors were doing and that India should be more evolved for 21st century and that my mom is lucky and privileged because of her ancestors and all this while my mom was speechless. and the whole group started mocking Indian culture and laughing so loud. One of the Korean lady who was with them noticed my mom was uncomfortable and she apologized. After a series of incidents like this and that last one being the main thing - My mom moved back to Tokyo University to complete her thesis. My mom explained him that it was inappropriate but HE STILL CHOSE TO DO IT. *I'm not targeting all Koreans but these racist ones disguising themselves under the "ignorance" curtain.* *THE MEDIA IS THE MAIN CULPRIT. THEY ONLY SHOW SLUMS WITH ARABIC MUSIC BEHIND AND PEOPLE DANCING FROM A 1990s BOLLYWOOD MOVE AND LIVING IN POVERTY TO DEPICT INDIA* I've seen so many comments from Indians (teenagers I suppose) who adore these mockeries and reply with hearts and cannot understand that they are basically mocking them. It's so disgusting and mind-numbingly stupid. *I just dropped a huge vent on a Korean channel because they showcased and discussed Anupam Tripathi's (The Indian character in Squid Game) caste with a background of slums and overcrowded trains. They discuss so much about caste in Indian society more than us and it's so disturbing*. I visited Busan a couple years back as a part of an education program and we discussed stereotypes in one of the sessions and it was DISGUSTING to hear all those stereotypes..*"Indians don't take bath,. They live in slum, wash their ass and eat with the same hand, they stink, etc.. etc..they all live in poverty except brahmins.."* and they started asking my caste and talking about privileges based on my caste. *"She speaks fluent English because she is a brahman..are you one?" WTF WTF WTF WTF* I'm not one and IT FUCKING DOESN'T MATTER. THEY LITERALLY THINK WE LIVE IN 1970s and mind you, they are IGNORANT BY CHOICE BECAUSE IT IS FUNNY TO THEM. Especially all these reality TV shows. They ALL get offended if there is a minor misappropriation in their culture. NOW SAY IT WITH ME *WE ARE BROWN AND FUCKING GORGEOUS AND OUR CULTURE IS RICH WITH FUCKING 800 LANGUAGES AND THERE IS BEAUTY IN CO-EXISTING* I love how we all are so supportive and agree and stand united and not blatantly disagree. this is my favorite comment section. MY BLOOD BOILS WHEN I SEE THESE KOREAN DUDES AND DUDETTES MOCK AND DISRESPECT US TO GET CHEAP LAUGHS. D.I.S.G.U.S.T.I.N.G.* I'M SO FUCKING HAPPY SOMEONE BROUGHT THIS UP AND MADE A WHOLE DAMN VIDEO! @@kpoplove2898 I dont think they were trying to imitate bharata Natyam exactly. That's just the gestures that they associate with India due to the fact that that's what is in the media that represents us. There isn't anything inherently disrespectful about it. If they danced with shoes on, in a full bharata Natyam costume, and called it bharata Natyam when its actually just an imitation of it, that would be truly disrespectful. But here, there is no malice not anything meant to offend anyone. Using hand gestures that happen to be used in bharata Natyam doesnt mean that they are actually trying to do bharata Natyam. Also, they werent even dancing in front of or to any deity, so how can you say that they were disrespecting Lord Shiva?

It's sad cause most of these idols don't even apologize for their actions . Edit : idk why some people think I am trying to defend the idols ? They are full grown adults and are very much capable of educating themselves especially considering they are public figures . And when I said that fans should educate them and not hate them I meant some that their intent may not be bad ...they are just ignorant ...and in that case you should call out that person and educate them on the issue . But ofc I didn't mean that fans have the responsibility of doing that . Simply hating them or blindly defending them ....fans should do either and instead try to educate them . Also just because they are Koreans doesn't give them an excuse because korea has all the requirements they would need to educate themselves : phone , net , google . Simple

Frankly speaking by doing so, india appear as bad image on the world level . Yes I under what blackpink and Lee hyori did was wrong and serious action must be taken against it. Alot of the things mentioned as 'stereotypical' by you are in fact , typical of Indian culture. Spices, intricate hand movements in dance, raagas, head bobbing, saaris, bindis, turbans. They aren't necessarily trying to make fun of Indian culture. This is what they identify as India and they're not entirely wrong. Honestly, in this video apart from maybe 2 - 3 things which do seem offensive, the rest really isn't. They aren't trying to disrespect us. This is just what they've been exposed to of india. Its natural. We do this with other countries too. We associate china with noodles, red lanterns, their distinctive language and eye shape. We associate Japan with sushi, geishas, samurai warriors, anime. Because it's what we've been most exposed to. Doesn't mean that we're disrespectful. Edit - no one is condoning cultural appropriation which is outright disrespectful and insensitive.. that's just plain wrong and stupid. All I'm saying is learn to differentiate between what is CA and what isn't. Also, learn to criticize when your 'idols' are supposed to be held accountable. Don't try to defend them when they are infact in the wrong. I repeat Not ALL instances in the above video are disrespectful but some def are, like the Ganesha statue in bp's vid and kyuhyuns outright shitty and condescending remarks about Indian culture of eating with hands etc

It's a different case with discriminating and mockering. But after watching this video, I think most of them are just with that associating thing or lack of knowledge and don't have any intention to disrespect anyone...once again, I don't have right to judge anyone, I just want to say my opinion...but still we should respect and search more information in this digital era so that we could learn about others better...
